After crossing this mountain and moving forward, they would reach the main peak of Shennongjia, which was also the destination for Bai Yujing and the others. It was drizzling, but they couldn't afford to stop; it felt like some wild beast was closely following them from behind, occasionally letting out roars that could be heard even across a mountain, and it seemed to be getting closer.
"Roar!"
Bai Yujing, who was at the front, turned around and asked, "What's going on? Is it getting closer? Is it because we have the same target, or is it following us for some reason?"
Xu Lei, feeling scared, tugged at Bai Yujing's clothes. "Let's hurry up! I feel like it's chasing us!"
Bai Yujing quickened his pace again. They needed to find a suitable place to rest and put some distance between themselves and whatever was behind them. Although they couldn't figure out what it was, the intensity of the sound made it clear that it was not something to be trifled with.
As they walked toward the main peak, they descended from the mountain top into a long stretch of flat forest land, which was much more comfortable to walk on than the mountain path. As night fell, Bai Yujing and the others planned to move forward a bit more before finding a place to set up camp.
Unexpectedly, they heard a sudden rumbling from behind, as if some enormous beast was rushing toward them. Bai Yujing immediately turned around and saw a massive Polar Bear leaping out of the mist, charging toward them.
"Are you kidding me? A Polar Bear?" Upon seeing the creature covered in white fur that looked just like a Polar Bear, Bai Yujing wondered where it had come from since they were not in the Arctic.
Zhong Qiang reacted quickly; he raised his shotgun and fired. The charging Polar Bear was immediately knocked back by the shot. The homemade shotgun made by Lao Qi had tremendous power; one shot left the bear's fur matted with blood.
However, after firing, Zhong Qiang showed no signs of joy and yelled angrily behind him, "Run!"
Bai Yujing took off running. While others might not understand, he knew well that this bear was not something to mess with. Did they think having a gun meant they could hunt bears? What a joke! This creature had tough skin and thick flesh; even if shot in a vital spot, it wouldn't die easily right away. If they missed the vital area, it would be even worse. A bear that tasted blood could go berserk—capable of tearing apart even a tiger.
Sure enough, they soon saw the Polar Bear get back up after being shot. With a fierce roar and red eyes, it chased after them. The group ran for their lives, but at that moment, Xu Lei's disadvantage as a girl became evident. Although her stamina might not be worse than that of adults, she couldn't run as fast as Bai Yujing and the other four men due to differences in height and weight.
Xu Lei, pale and hanging at the back of the group, listened to the terrifying roars and the sound of the giant bear running on all fours behind him. He shouted to the front, "Help me!"
Several people had already run to a lake nearby. This river wound around the foot of the main peak of Shennongjia, gathering here to form a lake. Bai Yujing and the others had to take a detour to run past it. Trying to swim across was not a reliable option, as bears were excellent swimmers and skilled at catching fish in the water.
Bai Yujing glanced back and immediately stopped, running toward the rear while pulling out a gun from his pocket, facing the charging Polar Bear.
Li Hao also halted at this moment, saying, "Old Bai, are you crazy?"
Bai Yujing showed no signs of hesitation. He raised his gun and aimed carefully, confirming his target before shooting the Polar Bear in the head. With a loud bang, blood splattered from the bear's head, but it showed no signs of stopping. Its head tilted slightly, and it continued to pursue them, its massive jaws wide open as it panted heavily, closing in on Bai Yujing and Xu Lei.
Bai Yujing rushed forward, grabbing Xu Lei and rolling on the ground. He fired several shots that hit the Polar Bear's head, causing it to struggle to lift its head. Half of its skull was missing flesh, and one side of its lips hung down.
At this moment, the Polar Bear realized it was in danger, but this only fueled its aggression. It lifted its forelegs as if standing like a human; its powerful limbs resembled four thick pillars capable of crushing a person with a single blow.
As the Polar Bear lunged at him, Bai Yujing remained calm. The more intense the situation became, the cooler he got. He aimed his pistol and shot one of its eyes. Instantly, he saw the Polar Bear halt its relentless charge and let out a mournful howl.
Seizing this opportunity, Bai Yujing aimed again and shot out the other eye of the Polar Bear. Now completely blind and disoriented, it flailed wildly at nearby trees and rocks, stripping bark off large trunks and sending boulders flying. The entire forest trembled under the threat of the dying Polar Bear.
Bai Yujing approached with a knife in hand. The Polar Bear seemed to sense his presence and turned toward him with a sharp roar. It brought both paws down in an attempt to strike him. Bai Yujing rolled away, maneuvered behind it, leaped onto its back, and plunged his knife into its neck.
In an instant, it appeared as though all strength had left the Polar Bear; its limbs fell limp as it collapsed heavily to the ground.
At that moment, everyone rushed out, staring in shock at Bai Yujing's face covered in bear blood. Li Hao immediately exclaimed, "Old Bai, your blade is still sharp! That's incredible!"
Bai Yujing wiped the blood from his face and said, "Alright, let's hurry and leave this place. I have a feeling something is off here."
As soon as Bai Yujing finished speaking, he noticed a change in the sky; the thick fog began to recede, and the world around him suddenly became illusory. Bai Yujing watched as the surrounding trees and lakes gradually disappeared, transforming into a narrow stream, while an ancient city slowly rose from the ground, gradually shifting from transparent to solid, from illusion to reality.
At that moment, Xu Lei's expression also changed. "Not good, Bai Yujing! We need to run quickly, or we'll fall into the cracks of the Underworld!"
Bai Yujing turned back and looked deeply at Xu Lei. Seeing the changes around them, he realized time was running out. The group started sprinting again. "Let's go, head towards that direction, towards the city gate!"
The ground began to rise slightly, and wooden buildings mixed with earth and stone emerged. The streets gradually became more real. This city, built at the foot of Shennongjia's main peak, was magnificent and incomparable to the small town Bai Yujing had found in the valley before.
"Speed up! We must get out before the moon rises!" Xu Lei shouted anxiously.
