The sky was filled with twinkling stars, and the bright moon hung high above. Everyone stood with their mouths agape, as if still entranced by the mysterious sense of ritual that lingered in the air, even after those strange beings had long since departed.
"What is that?" Li Hao asked in a daze. The creatures he saw were different from the monsters he had encountered before; he could sense that they were intelligent.
"Mountain Spirit!" Xu Lei replied to Li Hao.
Bai Yujing shouldered her backpack and took a step forward. "Let's go. If we follow that group of Mountain Spirits, we will surely find Lin Ruoqiao and the others. They must be heading towards them. Once we spot the Mountain Spirits, they shouldn't be far off."
Li Hao exclaimed, "We have to hurry again? We haven't really rested at all!"
Bai Yujing turned back and asked, "Do you want to find your sister?"
Bai Yujing's words immediately made Li Hao stand up, obediently putting on his backpack. The group forced themselves to focus and followed the Mountain Spirits from a distance. The Mountain Spirits were not moving quickly, and it wasn't long before Bai Yujing discovered their trail.
Li Hao asked Bai Yujing, "What do you think they are muttering about? It sounds like they're talking, but not quite!"
Bai Yujing shook her head. "I’m not sure. It feels like they are performing some kind of ritual; it must be a language we’ve never encountered before. After all, these beings are remnants from a mythological era long ago. Humanity still debates whether the Xia Dynasty even existed, but their era can be traced back to the times of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, or even further!"
Xu Lei warned Li Hao and Bai Yujing, "You two need to be careful. The Mountain Spirits have very sensitive hearing but poor sense of smell. If you speak too loudly, you might easily startle them!"
Bai Yujing glanced at Xu Lei. "If you have anything useful to say, just say it all at once!"
Xu Lei huffed a couple of times. "I'll say everything that needs to be said!"
Bai Yujing and a few others carried their backpacks, slowly trailing behind the Mountain Spirit, watching as hundreds of Mountain Spirit moved step by step along a path, as if on a pilgrimage. Bai Yujing followed this mountain path deeper into the main mountain range of Shennongjia.
Everyone was utterly exhausted, and Bai Yujing kept yawning. Fearing to disturb the Mountain Spirit, Bai Yujing and the others dared not get too close. At that moment, Bai Yujing asked Xu Lei, "What are these Mountain Spirit doing?"
Xu Lei glanced at Bai Yujing: "They are looking for the way into the mountains!"
Before Bai Yujing could respond, Li Hao, Zhong Qiang, and Lao Qi turned to look at Xu Lei simultaneously: "What?"
Bai Yujing twitched his mouth, his expression becoming somewhat strange: "Are you trying to tell me that this group of Mountain Spirit is lost? What a joke, aren't they local Mountain Spirit born and raised here?"
Xu Lei shook his head: "They are not lost; rather, for thousands of years, they have been searching for this path into the mountains. This group of Mountain Spirit are servants of the divine clan known as the Kuaiwei Clan. Their clan has always guarded the sacred mountain of the Kuaiwei Clan, and they are seeking the entrance to that sacred mountain!"
Xu Lei looked at Lao Qi and Zhong Qiang: "Shouldn't you both know this? Otherwise, why would you go to such lengths and pay such costs to find me?"
Zhong Qiang looked at Lao Qi, who shook his head: "I only know that you are key to entering the Imperial Tomb. Without you, we definitely cannot enter the Imperial Tomb. It was Minister who sought you out; he knows the most about this, while I actually know very little."
Bai Yujing immediately asked: "If your Minister knows so much, how could he confuse Lin Ruoqiao and Xu Lei?"
Xu Lei glanced at Bai Yujing, then looked at Li Hao: "The two siblings possess a special bloodline that is very close to that of the divine clan, making it difficult to distinguish between them!"
Bai Yujing quickly realized it was due to the Mermaid's Blood in both Li Hao and Lin Ruoqiao. This bloodline was surprisingly close to that of the divine clan? This suggested that these divine beings were not as extraordinary or mystical as imagined; they were not much different from the descendants of Atlantis. However, in ancient times, these beings with special abilities were indeed no different from deities.
Bai Yujing then asked: "So if we just follow them, we can find the entrance to the sacred mountain?"
Li Hao immediately said, "We are here to find Lin Ruo Qiao, not to look for some divine mountain. Old Bai, stop giving random orders and clarify our target!"
Zhong Qiang smiled and said, "Lin Ruo Qiao's goal is the same as ours; she wants to enter the divine mountain. They've been inside for quite a while now, so they might have already found the entrance and gone in."
Xu Lei shook his head, "It's not that simple. Without me, no one can find the entrance to the divine mountain. That is the sacred mountain of the ancient and powerful Kuaiwei Clan. The strength of these races is far beyond what you can imagine. The Mountain Spirits have guarded this place for thousands of years. If it were that easy to find, they would have found it by now. Can't you see they're still wandering around here?"
"However, with this opportunity of the divine mountain's appearance, they might actually be able to sense something from the Kuaiwei Clan and find the entrance to the mountain!"
Bai Yujing carefully analyzed Xu Lei's words, while Li Hao said, "Aren't you a descendant of the Kuaiwei Clan? Why do you still separate them from us? You should say 'we'!"
Xu Lei shook his head, "No, I am who I am, not someone else. I am just Xu Lei!"
Bai Yujing and the others continued to follow the Mountain Spirit deeper into the area. They soon realized that the mountain range beneath their feet was astonishingly vast. Occasionally, in the jungle, they would catch glimpses of eyes filled with cruelty and a desire to devour, resembling some kind of wild beast. Bai Yujing vaguely felt that these creatures resembled an animal that had gone extinct millions of years ago.
In the dark jungle, countless dangers and unknowns lurked within. As they walked along, Bai Yujing felt a chill run down his spine. However, these creatures seemed to be very afraid of the Mountain Spirit leading the way or perhaps mistook Bai Yujing and his companions for part of the Mountain Spirit group; they could only hide in fear deep within the Primeval Jungle without daring to show themselves.
Feeling the dangerous aura and massive size hidden in the darkness, Bai Yujing looked at the Mountain Spirits and realized how perilous those creatures ahead must be. He also carefully examined the entries in the Exotic Creature Hunter System's catalog and discovered that he had completed another entry for Exotic Creatures.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed the label: C-Rank Anomalous Creature — Mountain Spirit. They possess immense strength, acute hearing, gradually taking on a humanoid form as they age, skilled in enchanting and controlling beasts, capable of draining human lifespans!
