"Split up and escape!"
This top predator had its eyes fixed on everyone below, and no one had the slightest desire to resist. As its massive form charged forward, the wolves on the ground were terrified and scattered in panic.
Bai Yujing and the others scrambled up the mountain, hoping to create a diversion so that the descending Firebird would not react in time to hunt them down, instead focusing on the pack of wolves below.
"Split up, don't go together!"
"Chirp!"
The beautiful red bird swooped down, and with a cry in mid-air, it unleashed a torrent of scorching flames. The fire sprayed onto the ground, covering dozens of square meters with flames hot enough to melt gold and burn iron.
From a distance, Bai Yujing felt a wave of heat behind him. Turning around, he saw that the entire hillside was engulfed in roaring flames, with fire reaching skyward and spreading rapidly. Bai Yujing's heart raced; he had been too busy saving Li Hao to notice Xu Lei. Now, looking through the thick smoke and flames, he spotted someone in a tattered black cloak carrying Xu Lei as they ran toward the mountain. The figure moved with agility like a monkey, leaping several feet high with incredible speed.
"Damn it, there's someone taking advantage of the chaos!" Bai Yujing raised his gun and chased after them. This person was incredibly fast; every time Bai Yujing aimed his gun, he feared hitting Xu Lei on their back. After hesitating for a moment, he finally fired a shot but then lowered his weapon.
That shot attracted the attention of the phoenix circling above. It dove straight down toward the area where Bai Yujing had fired, unleashing a torrent of fire without hesitation. In this raging forest fire, Bai Yujing crawled and rolled through thick smoke. He quickly donned his previous gas mask; while it hadn’t been useful against the mist before, it proved invaluable now.
In the midst of a frantic run, Bai Yujing felt his body burning red, with several areas already showing signs of burns. The shoes on his feet had softened and begun to melt. In a state of utter disarray, he finally burst out from the flames.
At this moment, many parts of Bai Yujing's body were blistered. After removing his shoes, he found that his feet were covered in blood blisters, and his shoes had completely lost their shape, with some parts sticking to his socks.
After cleaning up the burns and blisters on his body, Bai Yujing applied some medicine and wrapped himself in bandages before starting to move. Although they had scattered in a panic, they had all generally headed in the same direction. If Li Hao and Zhong Qiang had also managed to escape, they would surely be nearby.
Sure enough, not long after, Bai Yujing spotted Li Hao and Zhong Qiang next to a rock ahead. Zhong Qiang was unconscious, while Li Hao's clothes were tattered and torn. "You really have good bloodline traits; it's such a waste for someone like you who's afraid of dying!" Bai Yujing said as he limped over to Li Hao, who was struggling with blood blisters on his feet. After popping one of the blisters, he walked over and patted Li Hao on the shoulder.
Li Hao irritably pushed Bai Yujing's hand away. "Enough already! I almost died! No matter how impressive you are, you can't withstand that Phoenix's chaotic flames; I nearly turned to ash! Lao Qi died in the blink of an eye; look at Qiangzi—can he still be saved?"
Bai Yujing checked Zhong Qiang's pupils and heartbeat before responding, "He's fine; he just fainted from smoke inhalation. If we leave him here for a bit, he'll wake up."
Having exhausted himself from running, Li Hao leaned against the rock alongside Bai Yujing. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes. "Want one?"
Bai Yujing took one and lit it up. It had been truly dangerous; that Phoenix was an C-Rank Anomalous Creature. When it attacked, its intent to burn down the entire mountain was something that ordinary people couldn't withstand.
After taking a puff, Li Hao's expression changed immediately. "Where's Xu Lei?"
Bai Yujing put down the cigarette. "He's not dead; he was taken away by someone. We really took a big hit this time—now we know what it means when the mantis stalks the cicada while the oriole waits behind."
Li Hao immediately asked, "What do you mean?"
Bai Yujing pointed to the large fire on the mountain behind, the flames turning the entire sky red. "Why is there a phoenix appearing in that place? That guy is the gatekeeper; if you want to get in from there, you have to pass this test. If I'm not mistaken, ahead is the lair of the Mountain Spirit."
"That guy made us fight with the wolf pack to attract the phoenix's attention, and then he conveniently grabbed Xu Lei and ran away. We almost became his scapegoats!"
The more Bai Yujing thought about it, the angrier he became. "That guy has been trailing us for a while. I sensed something was following us since we first entered the mountain. Bai Yujing smiled slightly. "If it were an ordinary Mountain Spirit, it would be unlikely. But what if it's a Mountain Spirit that has been exiled from its group? This is a passage for Mountain Spirits to come and go; this guy relies on us causing chaos to dare to enter. He’s definitely not part of the same group as the Mountain Spirits we encountered before. Li Hao pointed into the distance. "Didn't you say that ahead should be the lair of the Mountain Spirit? Let's find them first; maybe we can locate Lin Ruo Qiao and the others!"
