The Mountain Spirits are so clever; it seems they have been observing Bai Yujing for a while and know that Bai Yujing is the most dangerous among this group. The first one rushes forward, attempting to take a decapitating action to eliminate Bai Yujing.
However, Bai Yujing immediately reacts. The Mountain Spirit tightly grabs Bai Yujing's backpack and forcefully drags him backward, throwing Bai Yujing away. Bai Yujing quickly kicks off from the surrounding tree trunks to stabilize himself. At this moment, the other hand of the Mountain Spirit is freed, wielding a heavy Bronze Lantern and smashing it down towards Bai Yujing.
The heavy Bronze Lantern, combined with the immense strength of the Mountain Spirit, directly breaks a tree trunk as thick as a thigh and continues its relentless descent towards Bai Yujing. If it hits, it would either kill him or severely injure him. Bai Yujing immediately positions his rifle horizontally in front of him to block the lantern's pole. However, the tremendous force still sends Bai Yujing flying several meters away.
Feeling his hands tremble and his palms crack from the impact, Bai Yujing shouts, "What are you waiting for? Shoot!"
Everything that just happened was too fast; it all occurred in an instant. No one had time to react, and with Bai Yujing entangled with the Mountain Spirit, no one dared to fire for fear of friendly fire. Now that they see Bai Yujing and the Mountain Spirit separate, several handguns immediately aim at the Mountain Spirit.
The Mountain Spirit seems unfamiliar with firearms and is caught off guard, taking several shots before it can react. Its head quickly turns to dodge critical hits, but most bullets strike its chest and abdomen, causing intense pain that elicits sharp screams.
Although the injuries on the Mountain Spirit appear severe, they are cushioned by its thick fur and fat. With its tall and robust physique, such wounds cannot deliver a fatal blow. By the time everyone prepares for a second round of fire, this creature screeches and retreats into the fog using all four limbs.
Immediately, they chase after it, firing into the mist where the Mountain Spirit disappeared. After hearing two cries of agony, it quickly flees far away. At this moment, Li Hao and Zhong Qiang still want to pursue, but Bai Yujing stops them.
"Don't chase! There’s more than one of them; this is just the advance scout. We need to run!"
"Run? Where do we run to?" A Ling immediately asks. This place is engulfed in fog; they can't even tell which direction to go. Those Mountain Spirits, however, seem unfazed by the mist. No matter how fast they run, can they outrun them?
Tightening his backpack, Bai Yujing starts running, and the others have no choice but to follow suit. They abandon their tents on the ground; everyone quickly grabs their backpacks and rushes out. As they run, Bai Yujing says, "Ahead is the Phoenix's lair. Once we get there, we can use the Phoenix's might to shield us for a bit. We came from that direction; I remember some of the route; we shouldn't go wrong!"
Upon hearing this, both Li Hao and Zhong Qiang change their expressions. The Phoenix's might is capable of melting gold and burning iron; running toward that place surely means seeking death! However, with pursuers behind them, there’s no other choice. Just seeing how fierce a single Mountain Spirit is makes it clear that if a group comes charging in, even with guns, they would be utterly helpless against them!
As expected, when a few people started running, sounds of rustling came from the forest behind them. It was the sound of someone moving through the underbrush, brushing against leaves and branches. The massive figure of the Mountain Spirit felt like a small tank charging forward, making a tremendous noise.
Hearing the sounds behind them, the group quickened their pace. Bai Yujing was at the front, wielding a Dog Leg Knife and swiftly cutting through vines and branches to clear a path. However, the noise behind them seemed to be getting closer. Based on Bai Yujing's estimation, it wouldn't be long before they were caught.
At that moment, Bai Yujing and the others circled around the mountain from the side of the forest and saw a large area that had been burned to white ash. The once lush trees were now charred black, standing starkly against the ground where not a single blade of grass remained. The air was thick with the lingering smell of smoke and fire.
"We're here! This is it!" Bai Yujing exclaimed with delight, realizing they had arrived at just the right time. It seemed like fate was on their side!
Bai Yujing rushed toward the center of this fiery graveyard and shouted to Li Hao behind him, "Li Hao, get ready with the Sonic Bomb when we reach there. We'll set up an ambush under the Phoenix Tree and hit them hard!"
Bai Yujing had another plan in mind: to use the Sonic Bomb to awaken the phoenix, allowing them to escape from the pursuing Mountain Spirits amidst the chaos. There was even a chance to seize a Bronze Lantern; with it, they could return home. Bai Yujing instructed everyone, "Once the Sonic Bomb goes off, aim for the Mountain Spirit's head—that's its weak spot. Don't waste bullets; we have limited ammo!"
However, when Bai Yujing and his group reached the middle of the mountainside, he was stunned to find that there was no Fire-Red Paulownia Tree here, let alone any phoenixes—there was nothing at all.
Zhong Qiang and Li Hao also arrived, following closely behind Bai Yujing through the mist. Upon seeing this scene, they were equally bewildered. "What happened? Where's that big tree? Even if it burned down, there should be some remnants left!"
Bai Yujing was frustrated as well. "That tree is fire-resistant; how could it possibly burn down!"
Lin Ruoqiao and A Ling caught up as well. After running such a long distance without getting separated in the fog was almost miraculous. A Ling, panting heavily, finally caught her breath and said,
"I wanted to mention earlier that we passed through here too but didn't see any phoenixes! Phoenixes? How could such creatures really exist?" A Ling felt incredulous.
Zhong Qiang pointed at the scorched landscape around them. "This is what we saw when we passed through here before—it was all burned! Lao Qi was killed by a fire blast from a phoenix right here! How can you say there wasn't one?"
Bai Yujing immediately recalled something: "A Ling, when you passed through here, was it during the day or at night?"
A Ling quickly replied, "It was during the day when we came through here!"
Bai Yujing nodded: "No wonder. That phoenix is likely not a creature that exists in reality; it can only appear at night when the mist dissipates, allowing this place to fall into a gap between the real and the illusory!"
Li Hao exclaimed anxiously, "What should we do? The enemy is already closing in!"
Bai Yujing's expression turned stern: "What else can we do? Get our weapons and fight them! Damn it, this guy really thinks I'm just sitting around doing nothing. This time, I have to make them taste my strength. Li Hao, assess the situation and be ready; don’t throw the Sonic Bombs out one by one!"
At this moment, the sounds from afar grew closer, as if at least ten Mountain Spirits were rushing towards them, like ten tanks charging forward. Everyone held their guns tightly, watching the source of the noise with a firm grip on their weapons!
