The moment they stepped out of the palace, Bai Yujing was startled again by the scene outside. The entire city was surrounded by malevolent spirits and ghosts, with layers upon layers closing in. It seemed that at the moment their ruler, Xi Fa, went mad, these creatures also became agitated.
Li Hao and the others trembled in fear. Just moments ago, these beings had recklessly charged toward the light of the Bronze Lantern, a dark cloud of smoke obscuring the sky. Dozens of Mountain Spirits were instantly dragged away by these ghosts, accompanied by crunching sounds before they vanished without a trace.
Lin Ruoqiao, A Ling, and Zhong Qiang couldn't help but swallow hard. Before entering, they had never imagined that the target they were seeking would be in such a bizarre place. If it weren't for their extraordinary luck, no number of people could withstand this situation!
Li Hao tightly held onto the lantern and noticed Bai Yujing and the Red Consort emerging from inside. Without thinking twice, he shouted loudly, "Old Bai! Over here!"
Bai Yujing immediately descended the steps toward Li Hao but was quickly blocked by two Mask Mountain Ghosts. The Red Consort turned her head and coldly looked at Bai Yujing, saying, "Do as I say, and you can live; they can live too!"
Bai Yujing stared at the Red Consort and asked, "What exactly do you want?"
The Red Consort frowned, seemingly puzzled as she looked at Bai Yujing. "You know nothing? Then why are you here?"
Bai Yujing replied promptly, "A few of my friends have been captured by you; I just came to rescue them!"
The Red Consort shook her head, looking at Bai Yujing with confusion. "You are from the divine race; why do you care about the lives of those ants? Oh right, there are two inside who seem to have some traits of divine blood—those are the ones you care about, right? Don't worry; I had no intention of harming that divine descendant!"
Bai Yujing realized that the Red Consort was referring to Li Hao and Lin Ruoqiao. According to her words, it was more or less accurate. However, it felt like humans and Mountain Spirits had vastly different thought processes; explanations would not only be futile but also incomprehensible. Bai Yujing could only nod in agreement.
"I will do as you say, but you must safely let us go back!"
"I keep my word!"
With the assistance of two Mask Mountain Ghosts, the Red Consort boarded her carriage. Bai Yujing and several other Mask Mountain Ghosts followed closely behind her. Four strong Mountain Spirits lifted the carriage as the large procession moved forward once again, preparing to ascend the mountain.
As the eyes of the Red Consort shone with a green light, a path opened among the dense crowd of spirits, who looked fearfully at the brightly dressed Red Consort. The group, carrying lanterns, transformed into a procession and slowly walked out of Fallen City.
Groups of spirits revealed red glows in their eyes as they watched them slowly depart, seemingly struggling against their inner greed and desires, but the ferocity in their eyes could not be concealed.
The capital of the Ancient Mi Kingdom was situated right at the foot of the Kuaiwei Clan's sacred mountain, with the main road leading up the mountain directly behind it. To ascend the mountain, one must pass through Fallen City, and without the consent of the guardian, it would be perilous; one would likely be devoured by thousands of malevolent spirits before even getting close.
As they reached the foot of the mountain, the clouds and mist finally began to dissipate, revealing a sense of clarity akin to seeing the moon through clouds. At that moment, everyone looked up and saw the massive peak above them. The dark red glow that had previously been faintly visible at the summit finally revealed its true nature amidst the swirling mist.
"What is this?" Bai Yujing exclaimed, his mouth agape. While observing from afar, he had imagined many scenarios about what this mountain might look like, but upon arriving here, he never expected such a scene.
Before them stood a volcano—an active volcano. Flames erupted from its peak; although lava was not visible, it was clear that fierce flames and molten rock flowed within its depths.
"The sacred mountain of the Kuaiwei Clan is actually a volcano?"
"Those divine beings once lived atop a volcano; it's truly unimaginable!"
"The Yandi Mausoleum is buried here? How could a tomb possibly be constructed in such a place!"
"Do not view them with ordinary eyes; they are gods!"
The peak of this mountain was barren, steep and devoid of vegetation, with jagged rocks making it appear nearly impossible to climb. At the summit, there was an opening from which red flames erupted; it was Bai Yujing and others' first time witnessing such a peculiar sight.
After all, observing an active volcano up close was something beyond ordinary imagination. However, for the Mountain Spirits who had arrived here, it was different; all members of the Mountain Spirit Clan knelt before this sacred mountain.
Including the Red Consort, who was born thousands of years ago and had witnessed the last remnants of the Kuaiwei Clan's glory, seemed to harbor a unique sentiment towards the Kuaiwei Clan.
Hundreds and thousands of Mountain Spirits gathered to worship the mountain peak. The ritual and posture of their worship were exactly the same as what Bai Yujing had seen in Mountain Ghost Village. Bai Yujing once thought they were worshipping the sun, but now realized they were actually paying homage to the direction of the sacred mountain; this was their faith, and the Kuaiwei Clan was everything they once had.
The servants of the Kuaiwei Clan gradually distanced themselves from the control of the Kuaiwei Clan after its disappearance, developing thoughts of rising up and taking charge. However, being originally from the Kuaiwei Clan, their feelings toward it were quite complex.
After a complicated worship ceremony concluded, Red Consort also stood up, and the complex look in her eyes slowly faded. She waved her hand and said, "Let's go up; someone has already entered the mountain ahead of us."
The mountain path was very difficult to traverse, with no flowers or trees, only dark stones scattered everywhere. The terrain was rugged and steep, making it impossible to walk in many places; they could only climb upward.
However, these Mountain Spirits moved effortlessly, using their special abilities to control their bodies as if flying through the jagged rocks. Especially those four Mountain Spirits carrying the writer, who lifted dumplings with light steps as if they were flying up the slope. Despite the rough path, they moved steadily.
Bai Yujing and the others could only ascend slowly, gradually making their way up. Standing at the foot of the mountain, they felt how towering it was like clouds; now that they were climbing, they felt an incredible height—estimating it to be several thousand meters high—with steep faces that were nearly impossible to scale. After reaching halfway up the mountain and looking back, the upper half resembled not a mountain but an irregular pillar.
Lin Ruoqiao weakly grasped a rock and said, "Next time I won't take such risks again; this is just looking for trouble and suffering. Only someone as abnormal as you, Bai Yujing, would be willing to do this!"
Bai Yujing shot Lin Ruoqiao a glare. "Hold on tight to the rock; don't fall! If you fall, you're really dead—no one will save you!"
At this moment, Li Hao also took a breather and joked, "There's nothing up here; where did these divine beings live when they resided on this mountain? They wouldn't have lived in a volcano, would they?"
Zhong Qiang laughed as well. "Who would live inside a volcano?"
As they climbed to this point, everyone felt physically exhausted. They didn't know how long they had been climbing; even those who were strong and full of energy began to feel drained before finally reaching the summit.
