Standing outside the volcano's crater, one could see that the volcano was bottomless. Deep below, flowing magma could be faintly seen, its red glow shining brightly in the darkness, making it extremely dazzling.
An artificially dug entrance tunnel spiraled down into the volcano's interior. Bai Yujing could vaguely see man-made structures on the rock walls. The scale of this project was far more terrifying than that of a royal tomb, and the difficulty was beyond imagination. One could only imagine how the Kuaiwei Clan, at its peak, had driven slaves and Mountain Spirits to excavate such a magnificent structure.
The descending passage was not spacious and had fallen into disrepair over the years, with many areas having collapsed, allowing only one person to pass through. The Mountain Spirits also spread out their formation, lining up to head deeper inside. As Bai Yujing went down, he saw numerous openings and stone doors carved into the walls.
Inside the mountain, there must have been even larger internal structures. The Kuaiwei Clan once lived here, but now the entire building had been abandoned, empty of any inhabitants. The Mountain Spirit Clan and Red Consort showed no intention of entering; they simply continued their descent.
Li Hao gazed at the dense and intricate Ancient Architecture built against the inner wall of the volcano, somewhat stunned. As they walked in, it felt as if they were Liu Laolao entering Grand View Garden for the first time—never before had he seen anyone create such a grand city inside a volcano.
Indeed, it was a city—a city located within a volcano. Standing on the carved mountain path, both walls were filled with openings. Looking up, there were countless more, along with stairs embedded with stones. One could imagine that in ancient times, a group of people lived here with a unique civilization and heritage.
“Wow, these people really lived inside a volcano. Can this place actually be inhabited?” Li Hao thought about his earlier words and felt a sense of self-reproach.
A Ling followed closely behind Li Hao, equally astonished: “Fire holds special significance for the Kuaiwei Clan; perhaps the volcano has special power or meaning for them!”
As they descended further, the temperature seemed to rise increasingly high. Everyone felt their bodies heating up and struggled to cope. It felt as though they had reached a critical point; ahead appeared a large stone platform where the path showed signs of faulting. It seemed that after excavating to this point, they had abandoned any thought of continuing downward.
Here stood a temple. At this moment, Red Consort waved her hand to signal the entire team to stop as if they had encountered something crucial. Bai Yujing looked at the temple and immediately recognized where they were.
Li Hao shouted from behind, “Isn't this the temple we encountered at first? The most bizarre temple that was strange indeed—during the day it was in Mountain Valley but moved halfway up the mountain at night and was haunted in the middle of the night!”
Li Hao's memory was so vivid; needless to say about A Ling and Lin Ruoqiao—they had also been to this temple and even spent a night inside where several people had died. This place was likely where their nightmare began during their Shennongjia journey.
Bai Yujing turned around and looked at A Ling, "What did you encounter here before?"
A Ling's face changed dramatically, as if recalling some terrifying memory, "A monster, there is a monster inside the temple!"
Bai Yujing immediately asked, "What kind of monster?"
A Ling swallowed hard, her athletic body trembling slightly, "I don't know, because we couldn't see it at all. We could only see its shadow and not its body. It just swallowed all three of us whole. It was a small temple, yet we couldn't escape no matter how hard we tried. Finally, in the middle of the night, we managed to run away, but in our panic, we got separated from a few others. The remaining ones fled to the village in Shanxia and also died there."
Bai Yujing's mouth dropped open as he looked at Li Hao and Zhong Qiang, "It seems we are quite lucky. If it weren't for encountering that mountain-guarding phoenix, none of us would have survived!"
Li Hao asked worriedly, "Do we still need to go down? There's no way forward here! Plus, the temperature down there is too high; if we go any further, it might be life-threatening!"
Bai Yujing hesitated and said, "We can't make decisions here right now; let's take a look first!"
At that moment, Red Consort found Bai Yujing again and led him away. Bai Yujing listened to Red Consort while everyone else stayed behind, leaving only him to follow her down.
Red Consort seemed very familiar with the temple; it wasn't her first time here. She grabbed Bai Yujing and walked inside. Seeing Red Consort's expression, Bai Yujing realized she had become very wary as if there was something extremely terrifying inside.
Red Consort held onto Bai Yujing tightly, "I hope whatever is inside fears your identity and doesn't attack us; otherwise, we might all die here!"
Bai Yujing immediately felt something was off, "Who exactly is inside?"
Red Consort shook her head, "I've never seen him either; I've only heard about him. But it's also possible that he has long since vanished since he died ten thousand years ago. This is merely a replica of the Underworld; it's impossible for a person's spirit to exist for ten thousand years!"
Bai Yujing couldn't help but swallow hard. Ten thousand years—just hearing that number felt strangely shocking. The two of them stepped onto the Stairs again, heading into the temple. Although it wasn't their first time entering, this time the scene and situation were completely different from the last.
Looking at the temple built near the bottom, dark red magma flowed deep beneath, while towering rock walls loomed above. Below was a sheer cliff, and the small temple standing on such a platform instantly became awe-inspiring.
Bai Yujing immediately asked, "Who is he?"
Red Consort quickly replied, "Chisongzi!"
Bai Yujing's foot, just about to cross the threshold of the main hall, suddenly stopped as if he wanted to retract it immediately. He turned to Red Consort and said, "What?"
Bai Yujing suddenly recalled the statue of Chisongzi enshrined in the temple, along with the few characters left above. This was a temple built by the great craftsmen of the Ancient Mi Kingdom. To build a temple like this must have been done posthumously; since Red Consort said Chisongzi was here, then the significance of this temple changed—it was meant to preserve Chisongzi's spirit or perhaps had another meaning.
Bai Yujing even remembered the strange signs when they entered that temple before, as if someone had always lived there, along with what A Ling had just said about only being able to see shadows but not bodies.
"Are we really going in?"
