Walking down from the fork in the path, everything went relatively smoothly, and they did not encounter anything strange, not even the giant rats they often came across before. However, the more this was the case, the more Bai Yujing felt something was off. This road did not seem to be constructed during the Ming Dynasty; it resembled a passage left over from an even older era.
After walking for two hours, the two gradually descended deeper underground. Aside from stopping briefly to change the batteries of their spotlight when it ran out of power, they did not face any significant obstacles. However, upon reaching this point, Bai Yujing began to notice some signs that were quite different from what they had encountered earlier.
Stone statues gradually started to appear here. The water flowed together to form a river, and these stone statues were placed on both sides of the riverbank, each depicting a human figure in a kneeling posture, as if welcoming something into this place.
The entire cave also became wider as it extended deeper. Watching the river flow gently ahead, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun walked along the bank until they reached the end of the path. There, Bai Yujing heard a loud sound of rushing water, almost deafening.
Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun exchanged glances, both revealing joy in their eyes. The massive sound of water indicated that they were likely very close to the Underground River, marking their arrival at their first destination.
However, upon reaching this point, Bai Yujing discovered even more evident ancient ruins. Next to the riverbank stood a gigantic stone tablet, and the number of human-shaped stone statues on both sides of the river increased. Under the light of Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun's spotlights, they appeared particularly eerie.
Bai Yujing examined one of the statues; it was just an ordinary stone statue. However, the material used to cast these statues was brought from above and differed from the stone materials found underground. The design of the statues was very primitive; while they were human-shaped, they only resembled shadows of people—very abstract in form and full of ancient charm.
After touching one of the statues, Zhou Jun said, "I have seen many artifacts from before the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period in museums. Their designs are quite similar to this style but differ significantly from that of Bai Ren's culture!"
Bai Yujing nodded: "This place should have nothing to do with Wang Quanyi. It's clear that these are not remnants from the Ming Dynasty. This might be the main path; from here on is the correct route into Bai Wang Tomb. This area was also left behind by the Zhou Dynasty's Bohou Kingdom Bai Wang!"
Pointing at a stone tablet at a bend in the river ahead, Zhou Jun shone his flashlight on it and said, "There are words on this tablet; what does it say?"
Following Zhou Jun's gaze, Bai Yujing looked over. The tablet was very tall and imposing, standing over ten meters high. It would not have been easy to transport such a large object here. Based on their journey so far, it was clear that such a massive stone block could only have been quarried on-site; otherwise, it would not have been feasible to bring it here: "Just looking at this tablet confirms my previous guess. During the period of Bohou Kingdom, there must have been another passage here that led directly deep underground. However, for some reason, that passage was destroyed later."
The two approached the tablet. In the darkness, their spotlight formed a circular beam illuminating it as they looked up at this stone monument. Upon seeing the characters inscribed on it, Bai Yujing felt an overwhelming sense of familiarity; these were indeed the characters used by the Ancient Divine Clan, which he had previously seen in Shennongjia, as well as the language used by the Kuaiwei Clan.
“Bai Wang Tomb!”
“Those who trespass shall die!”
Bai Yujing looked over from the left and silently read it aloud. The eight characters were neatly arranged in two rows, with blood-red letters that seemed to have been carved using some technique, leaving a colored mark on the stone. The red characters appeared to seep out like fresh blood, as if they had a hint of movement, each character trailing a long streak of blood.
Zhou Jun also felt somewhat shocked, but Bai Yujing was unfazed: “What a show! Who are they trying to scare?”
Bai Yujing did not pay any more attention to the stone tablet but instead looked behind: “There’s nothing wrong with this stone tablet or the statue; I’ve checked. At least these ancient people didn’t play tricks here; it’s purely meant to scare people and create an eerie atmosphere. However, the phrase ‘those who trespass shall die’ is definitely not simple; it might not just be empty threats. There could really be some danger ahead.”
Zhou Jun nodded: “We should still be cautious.”
At this moment, Bai Yujing suddenly recalled that after Liu Quanyi excavated this main passage, he abruptly chose to dig down another path. This new path seemed to lead all the way to the end. What could have caused Liu Quanyi to abandon this route and opt for a more troublesome and labor-intensive method? There was only one possibility: there was a danger here that they could not contend with.
As they reached this point, the humidity increased, and the water beneath their feet flowed forward. Bai Yujing looked ahead and saw an important water flow hub where numerous small tributaries converged with water seeping down from above, forming a significant water transfer junction.
The massive flow of water gathered here into a lake. Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun could see that there were Silver-White Fish swimming in it. Bai Yujing caught one to take a look and discovered that this type of fish actually had no eyes; he didn’t know what it was called.
In the vast cave filled with mist, the lake stretched from one end to the other, only revealing a blurred boundary. However, what caught Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun’s attention was not this but rather where the deafening sound of rushing water was coming from.
Sure enough, as Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun moved forward a bit more, they found that the cave turned a corner. Going further in, they saw that the cave had reached its end, revealing a massive opening dozens of meters high. Water flowed down from here, forming a gigantic waterfall; the roaring sound of water was indeed emanating from this waterfall.
Bai Yujing pointed the flashlight ahead and saw such a colossal flow of water and waterfall. He knew that they had likely found their destination; below this waterfall should be the Underground River that Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun were looking for.
"Let's go take a look together!"
When they arrived, a massive lake filled the entire cave, with turbulent waters ahead, leaving no place to stand. Entering the water seemed unlikely; while the area near the lake was manageable, closer to the waterfall, the rushing current was strong enough to sweep Bai Yujing and the others away.
Bai Yujing opened a silver box. "I'll send the Drone over to take a look, to see how high this waterfall is, how deep the water below is, and if there are any dangers. If it's safe, we can go down from this waterfall."
Bai Yujing thought that if there were any dangers, it would likely be beneath the waterfall, blocking this exit. Bai Yujing decided to check it out and assess the situation.
As Bai Yujing was fiddling with the Drone, Zhou Jun and his two companions, with their flashlights, had already attracted the attention of something lurking in the lake. The surging surface of the lake and the roaring waters revealed a massive black shadow slowly emerging from the bottom of the lake, with dozens of crimson eyes fixated on Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun.
