The sunset gradually faded, and the night arrived as expected. The palace lit its lanterns as usual, but the bedroom of Jingxian Palace was shrouded in darkness. At this moment, the two people inside remained silent. Finally, Mo Xiao Li stood up, walked to the bedside, and covered Mu Junqi with a blanket. Then he moved to the side and lit a palace lantern, instantly brightening the room.
As they gazed at each other, Mu Junqi felt her heart skip a beat. She lowered her head and softly said, "Your Majesty, shall we call for dinner?" Her voice was somewhat hoarse; perhaps she had caught a chill earlier.
However, Mo Xiao Li continued to stare at her intently. "Why is that? But I believe this matter is not something you did."
Upon hearing this, Mu Junqi immediately looked up at Mo Xiao Li. Her lips moved a few times, but in the end, she said nothing and continued to lower her head. Her mind was in chaos; how ridiculous it was. At that moment, she chose to believe in herself. For a brief instant, Mu Junqi felt that she no longer hated him; perhaps her connection with Xia Ziqian was simply one of fate without destiny.
When she looked up again, Mo Xiao Li had already walked to the door. Seeing her gaze on him, he spoke, "Rest well tonight; I will return." With that, he left.
After Mo Xiao Li departed, Mu Junqi remained in that position. For some reason, she found the candlelight too glaring. Struggling to stand up, she walked over and extinguished the flame before returning to bed. However, sleep eluded her.
Meanwhile, Mo Xiao Li could not hide his sorrow either. Reflecting on recent events made him feel as if everything had been orchestrated by someone else. It seemed that life ahead would be quite interesting. He clenched his fists and walked forward into the night.
Tossing and turning in bed made sleep impossible; it felt as if someone were watching her. Finally sitting up, she realized that Jingxian Palace was still very cold in the dead of night. Wrapping herself tightly in the blanket, she curled up in the corner of the bed and sat there for the entire night.
The next morning, she awoke to the sounds of commotion outside and discovered that she was still sitting in that position. Her body had gone numb and lacked sensation. She tried to stretch her legs but felt intense pain. After sitting for a while longer to recover, her head felt dizzy and her throat was extremely dry. Just as she intended to call for Ziyue, Ziyue entered the room. Seeing Mu Junqi awake, she hurried over with concern and asked, "Your Highness, are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Mu Junqi replied simply, though her voice was very hoarse and her nose felt blocked; overall, she felt quite uncomfortable. After taking a drink from Ziyue's offered water, she felt somewhat better and lay back down again. She instructed Ziyue, "Ziyue, you may go out now," before closing her eyes.
Noticing that Mu Junqi's face was slightly flushed with a sheen of sweat on her forehead as if she were mumbling in a dream state without responding no matter how much she called out to her, Ziyue looked worriedly at her before stepping outside.
Unbeknownst to them, it had already reached noon, yet Mu Junqi still had not risen. Ziyue could no longer contain her impatience and pushed open the door again. As soon as she entered, she saw Mu Junqi's face flushed red with beads of sweat forming on her forehead as if lost in a dreamlike state while mumbling something incomprehensible despite Ziyue's persistent calls going unanswered.
Ziyue became anxious and hurriedly called Zhang Deli to summon the imperial physician. She also sent a palace maid to Yun Jin Palace to find Mo Xiao Li. After giving the instructions, she fetched water to wipe Mu Junqi's forehead.
However, an hour passed, and neither the physician nor the emperor had arrived. It seemed as if everyone who had gone out had disappeared. Feeling Mu Junqi's body growing hotter, Ziyue could no longer wait and left Mu Junqi alone to run outside. Little did she know that this departure nearly cost Mu Junqi her life.
As Ziyue ran out of Jingxian Palace, she felt increasingly uneasy. The usually bustling path was eerily quiet today, prompting her to quicken her pace. Thus, she did not notice that not far behind her, Zhang Deli and others were standing there, watching Ziyue leave with smiles on their faces.
After a short run, she finally reached the physician's clinic. As soon as she entered, she saw Xia Ziqian dressed in a white robe, exuding a comforting aura. Without much thought, Ziyue rushed forward and knelt before Xia Ziqian to pay her respects.
"What happened?" Xia Ziqian asked softly, his voice elegant.
Ziyue looked up anxiously and said, "The princess seems to have caught a cold." As soon as she finished speaking, Xia Ziqian walked over to the medicine cabinet and organized some items before looking at Ziyue and saying, "Let's go." Ziyue immediately followed him out.
On the way, Ziyue asked, "Lord Xia, someone sent for you an hour ago. Didn't you know?"
Xia Ziqian paused for a moment, furrowing his brow as he looked at Ziyue and said, "But no one came." After a moment of realization, he urged, "The princess may be in danger; we need to hurry."
At that moment, Mu Junqi felt weak. After waking up, she found herself alone; all that responded to her was endless silence. Thinking about being sick again made her despise herself. Ever since entering the palace, her health had deteriorated significantly; it was easy for her to catch a cold.
After a while, Mu Junqi began to feel puzzled. Today in Jingxian Palace, there was not a single person around; even Ziyue was missing. Her head still felt dizzy, making it hard for her to think clearly.
Just then, there was some noise outside the door. Initially thinking it was Ziyue returning, she was about to speak when the door swung open. However, the person who entered was someone she did not recognize. Perhaps due to the backlight, she could only see that the person's face appeared somewhat darkened. Straining her eyes but seeing nothing clearly, she had no choice but to ask, "Who are you? Where is Ziyue?"
To her surprise, the person smiled; however, that smile seemed sinister. The raspy voice combined with such laughter sounded extremely grating. Mu Junqi's heart raced as she felt her body begin to tremble slightly but still bravely said, "You better not act recklessly; if the emperor finds out, you won't get away with it!" At this moment, Mu Junqi's voice remained hoarse; after finishing her warning, the other party merely smiled without responding.
Slowly, the two people drew closer. Mu Junqi finally saw the other person's face, and the terror on it was hard to conceal. She couldn't help but step back, but the visitor remained silent, only smiling at her. At that moment, Mu Junqi felt as if she could no longer think clearly. The person standing in front of her had countless cuts on their face, making it difficult to discern their original appearance, but this only added to the horror.
The smile on that person's face did not fade; they slowly pulled something from their pocket. After a long while, they took out a dagger and continued to smile as they sat beside Mu Junqi. She struggled to retreat, but her body felt weak and powerless, leaving her only able to watch helplessly as the person with the knife moved closer to her, unable to suppress a scream.
At the moment she screamed, the smile on that person's face vanished, replaced by a terrifying grimace. Looking at Mu Junqi, they moved their lips and finally spoke: "Today, you are doomed!" The voice was as unpleasant and frightening as a snake hissing...
