The next few days passed quietly, but early one morning, before dawn, General Mu brought a man into the palace. Ever since Mu Junqi was gone, Mo Xiao Li had started to sleep lightly, waking up startled at the slightest sound, and he would wake up very early every morning.
Before he could step outside, he heard Li Fusheng discussing something with someone. Confused, he pushed the door open and stepped out. Outside, General Mu immediately stopped, and everyone hurriedly knelt down to pay their respects, "Long live the Emperor!"
"You may all rise," Mo Xiao Li said in a deep voice. He then looked at General Mu with some confusion and asked, "I wonder why General Mu has come so early. Is there something urgent?"
"Your Majesty," General Mu replied without standing up, kneeling respectfully before him. "I sent someone to Nanyang to gather information and learned something that I felt you must know as soon as possible. I apologize for disturbing your rest."
Mo Xiao Li had initially speculated that General Mu's early visit must be for some important matter, but he never expected it to be for this reason. He couldn't help but clench his fists and said coldly, "Come in and speak." With that, he turned and walked inside.
Taking advantage of the moment when everyone was unprepared, General Mu glanced at the man behind him before following Mo Xiao Li inside. Once inside, he saw Mo Xiao Li sitting above them, casting a cold glance at the man behind him. General Mu quickly stepped forward and respectfully said, "Your Majesty, this is the scout who went to Nanyang."
The man behind stepped forward and knelt on the ground, looking up at Mo Xiao Li respectfully as he said, "Your Majesty, I am Wang Shi. I went to Nanyang at the behest of the General and saw... saw the Empress there."
"Say that again!" Since he had already heard about this matter before, this time he was not as furious as last time; instead, he asked coldly.
Wang Shi's expression remained unchanged as he looked at Mo Xiao Li respectfully and said, "I am originally a servant of the General's household, so I clearly remember the Empress's appearance. When I went to Nanyang this time, I heard that the Wise King brought back a woman from Western Yan. At first, I didn't think much of it, but later at a banquet, I realized that the woman was indeed the Empress..."
"Enough! I understand now; you may leave!" Mo Xiao Li suddenly interrupted him coldly.
General Mu smiled with satisfaction but maintained his respectful demeanor as he bowed and left Tianming Palace with Wang Shi.
It wasn't until there was no one left in the hall that Mo Xiao Li processed Wang Shi's words. So it turns out his earlier suspicions were true. He smiled sarcastically and found himself momentarily unable to think clearly about the situation until Li Fusheng came in to remind him about attending morning court and noticed Mo Xiao Li sitting there in a daze.
With some confusion, he cautiously stepped forward and asked, "Your Majesty, it is time for the morning court—"
However, today Mo Xiao Li did not rise as usual. Instead, he stood up and looked at Li Fusheng with a mocking smile and said, "If the Empress were still here, what should I do?"
"Your Majesty, you are overthinking again..."
But before Li Fusheng could finish his words, he was interrupted by Mo Xiao Li. The image of Mu Junqi when she first entered the palace suddenly flashed in his mind. Thinking of everything that followed and the pain he felt when he learned of her death, all of it turned into a wave of anger that he could not suppress. He slammed his hand on the nearby table with a loud bang, startling Li Fusheng, who quickly knelt on the ground, unsure of what had happened to the Emperor and could only lower his head in silence.
Mo Xiao Li lifted his foot and walked outside, completely ignoring Li Fusheng's shouts. Once outside the palace gates, he ordered someone to bring a horse. Without taking anyone with him, he mounted the horse and galloped away, soon arriving at the Mausoleum.
He slowly walked inside and soon reached Mu Junqi's grave. Looking at this place where he had been not long ago, everything made him feel humiliated.
"Mu Junqi, you really are something else. You managed to deceive me completely. For you, I no longer care about anything else, but I never expected you to be such a person!" Mo Xiao Li whispered as he stood before the grave.
At that moment, Li Fusheng and the guards of the Mausoleum rushed over. Seeing the Emperor like this, Li Fusheng hurriedly asked, "Your Majesty, what is wrong?"
"Dig it up for me!" To everyone's surprise, Mo Xiao Li suddenly shouted coldly.
Everyone looked at the fury radiating from Mo Xiao Li. Despite their many questions, they respectfully nodded. The people behind him brought shovels forward while Mo Xiao Li silently stood by watching.
After a while, the grave was dug open, and the coffin was placed before everyone. Strangely enough, there was no odor at all; as the weather had gradually warmed up, there should have been a foul smell by now. Mo Xiao Li stared intently at it and then coldly commanded, "Open it!"
The others did not dare hesitate and stepped forward to forcefully open the coffin. What was revealed shocked everyone—the corpse looked as pristine as if it had just been placed inside. Cold sweat broke out on their backs as they feared something unclean might be present. However, Mo Xiao Li directly bypassed everyone and approached the coffin. He carefully examined that familiar face and then recklessly reached under the corpse's armpit to retrieve something.
Li Fusheng naturally knew what it was, but he could not understand the Emperor's true intentions at that moment. He could only stand aside, feeling somewhat anxious as he watched everything unfold.
Then a strange phenomenon occurred: the corpse began to slowly decay in front of everyone, emitting a nauseating odor. Mo Xiao Li showed no reaction at all, as the face of the corpse remained unchanged at that moment. However, it was vaguely noticeable that the bottom of the face started to wrinkle. He then reached out and directly tore off the facial skin, only to discover that it was merely a mask. Underneath the mask, the face had already begun to rot.
With everything now clear, all those present were extremely astonished. Suddenly, Mo Xiao Li started to laugh, his body trembling slightly. Li Fusheng hurried over to support him, but he shook Li Fusheng off and coldly said, "No one can speak of this matter; otherwise, it will be a massacre of nine clans. Understood?"
Everyone quickly knelt on the ground and replied in unison, "Servant understands—"
"Remove this corpse and restore the original state; we must not let anyone discover it!" Mo Xiao Li left these words before turning and riding away, leaving everyone looking at each other in confusion. Li Fusheng quickly signaled for everyone to continue handling the situation and sighed as he watched Mo Xiao Li leave.
