The humid air condensed into small dewdrops as the first ray of sunlight fell. They dripped down from the branches of the trees. By chance, one dewdrop, carried by a sudden breeze, quietly landed on Alpha's neck.
"Ding"
It's like ripples in a dream.
In a daze, accompanied by the comforting meow beside her, Alpha finally woke up from her slumber. Gently rubbing her sleepy eyes, she finally saw the cat snuggled up next to her. Perhaps she, who had been searching for her sister Luna alone all this time, had already become accustomed to waking up like this. But the sudden appearance of the white cat that joined her journey seemed to awaken long-forgotten memories from her past.
The smile on the face is the best proof.
Perhaps even Alpha himself hasn't noticed that the casual smile has not appeared for a long time.
Also, when she reached out to the cat, the cat's proactive approach once again warmed her cold heart. Besides her own family, the only other being that had made her smile or seen her smile seemed to be this cat in front of her.
"Are you still sleeping?"
With a hint of curiosity, Alpha shifted her gaze to the commander in front of her. The latter was still sound asleep, wearing a smile immersed in a dream. However, it was when the sunlight suddenly fell on the commander's face that the scars from battle became glaringly visible. A strange empathy made Alpha involuntarily retract her smile. However, when Alpha reached out to touch, she suddenly realized that her other hand was already tightly holding the commander's hand.
(What have I done!?) The sudden situation made Alpha's face turn red involuntarily. But the next second, she quickly calmed down as she recalled last night. Of course, that is if she hadn't seen the fish she had placed already burnt to a crisp.
"Ah!"
Subconsciously, a soft exclamation escaped from Alpha's mouth as she suddenly sat up. But then she seemed to forget that the commander was still sound asleep on her lap.
So...
*Bang*
An object fell to the ground with a crisp sound, accompanied by a few complaints, and the commander also woke up from his dream.
"... It hurts..."
Somehow, as his own senses slowly returned, the pain from all over his body made him involuntarily bite his lip. He subconsciously called out for Lucia, but all he heard in response was the sound of the wind in his ears. And as the commander's gaze also became clearer with the fading sunlight, the owner of the slender figure before him instinctively made him step back.
"Alpha."
He stared at the familiar figure in front of him, his hands instinctively making a defensive gesture. However, the Alpha in front of him seemed to have a look he had never seen before: staring blankly, blinking his eyes, and fidgeting with his hands in confusion.
(I messed up...)
*Cough, cough.*
With the sound of a cat's meow and his own light cough, Alpha adjusted his posture as if nothing had happened just now.
As for the commander, when those pains pierced through his body again with each breath, in a sudden moment, he couldn't help but collapse to the ground. Fortunately, Alpha caught him.
'Goo~~~'
The stomach instinctively made a sound of longing. And the memories from not long ago were replaying vividly in the commander's mind. But he could only smile bitterly, and he didn't even have the strength to resist when Alpha lifted him up.
"What are you doing?"
However, Alpha just glanced at him.
"Shut up."
Immediately after, when the commander's stomach made a 'gurgle' sound again, Alpha's expression began to look hesitant. However, soon after, when she saw the cat next to her looking 'very happy eating', her hesitation turned into action.
"Lie down. Don't speak."
Alpha gently placed the commander's head on her lap, while holding a grilled fish in her hand. Although it could hardly be called grilled fish: it looked black and charred, like a failed attempt made by someone. "Can this be eaten?"
With his weak voice, the commander forced a smile. However, as he watched Alpha carefully dissecting the grilled fish and removing the small bones, the familiar movements and posture made the commander's eyes start to blur.
"Open your mouth."
In response to Alpha's words, savoring the fish in their mouth that they couldn't even describe the taste of, tears finally fell.
"Is it very unpleasant?"
But the commander just shook his head.
"No..."
And then...
"Thank you."
So the commander closed his eyes. He was somewhat afraid, because that familiar face caused him endless heartache. He also didn't want the sunlight to enter his eyes, after all, the clear sky had long since lost sight of the stars.
And so, in their silent companionship, amidst the soft meowing of a cat nearby. Listening to the ballad of the wind, feeling the remaining warmth of this lonely place.
And when everything returned to calm again, when the scorching sun was right in the middle of the sky...
"Why did you save me?"
Open your eyes and gaze at the familiar face in front of you.
"Why do you agree with me again?"
I lowered my head to shield myself from the glaring light.
"Because I am unwilling to accept it."
The constantly trembling heart awakens memories from not long ago.
"Also because I want you to stay alive."
The sudden smile on my face is all because of you.
The moment of silence seems to make the world stand still, as if that second freezes the future.
"You asked me a question, so I'll ask you one too."
Then suddenly, that smile seemed to have turned into a farewell that would never be seen again.
"If sacrificing one person can save more people. What would you choose?"
Through Alpha's eyes, the corner of which reflected the commander's deceased comrade. It was also in that instant that the commander's pupils suddenly contracted violently.
He wanted to question, but Alpha pressed his lips with a finger.
(Don't...)
He wanted to look away, but was gently touched on the cheek by Alpha.
(No!)
In the moment when our breath almost forgets to come because of the meeting of our eyes...
"Don't escape. Tell me, what is your choice in the end?"
