No matter how much Bai Tang wanted to join Shushan, she was now a disciple of Kunlun and had to accept her fate. This cave exploration had brought her great rewards: she acquired top-notch equipment, an increase in all attributes, and her combat power improved significantly. Moreover, she leveled up to ten, allowing her to leave the novice village. The experience gained in the cave not only helped her reach level ten, but until she reported to the government office in Main City for registration, players could not level up further. Any excess experience would be stored until after registration.
Bai Tang walked out of the cave, no longer fearing the Big Bad Wolf. That wolf was only a level eight BSS and was no match for her now. If it dared to come at her, Bai Tang could easily take revenge in just a few moments. Wolves held grudges and had keen noses; shortly after Bai Tang exited the cave, the wolf that had chased her came running back. Unfortunately for it, Bai Tang was no longer the weakling it once knew. Its arrival was merely an opportunity for Bai Tang to practice and gather resources, contributing a wolf pelt, a piece of Wolf Meat, and a Wolf Skin Vest. Checking the vest's attributes:
Wolf Skin Vest: Green Equipment
Equipment Level: Level 10
Durability: 10/10
Defense: +55
Agility: +10
Bai Tang was pleased to wear the Wolf Skin Vest. In the game, equipment is divided into seven levels, with quality ranging from low to high as follows: Whiteboard—Green—Blue—Purple—Orange—Celestial Grade Gold Equipment—and Dark Gold Equipment of divine quality. Most low-level equipment is whiteboard gear, so obtaining a green piece was indeed fortunate for Bai Tang.
"I need to hurry back to the village before the village chief gets impatient and deducts my reward."
Bai Tang ran towards the village, casually taking down ten cows and twenty sheep along the way. Near the village, feeling confident due to her high level, she snatched three chickens from novice players and returned to the village chief's house with various types of meat.
The village chief was surrounded by players and had no time to greet Bai Tang, so she waited for a moment before walking straight into the kitchen of the chief's house.
Taking out Wolf Meat, beef, lamb, and chicken, Bai Tang began cooking according to her planned recipes: since Wolf Meat was relatively coarse, she made Braised Wolf Meat; beef became Braised Beef and Five-Spice Beef Jerky; lamb turned into Grilled Skewers and Stir-Fried Lamb with Scallions; as for chicken, she prepared White Cut Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken. For vegetables, she made smashed cucumber, candied sweet potatoes, and sesame oil mountain bamboo shoots. Counting on her fingers, that made ten dishes; if she made two more, she'd have a full spread. What else should she make?
She tossed cleaned peanuts into a pan and stir-fried them until their skins darkened and popped off easily. Once they turned light yellow, she removed them from the heat and peeled off their skins. Next, she added starch powder to the pan and cooked it until done before scooping it out. Then she added sugar and a little water to boil while stirring until it bubbled; turning up the heat, she added peanuts along with chili powder, Sichuan pepper powder, salt, and other seasonings. Finally, she mixed in cooked starch quickly to finish a plate of Spicy Peanuts.
For her last dish, Bai Tang put in extra effort. She chopped various meats into minced meat and mixed them with egg yolks. Combining them two by two formed meatballs. In a pot with peanut oil heated over medium heat until hot enough (about 70% heat), she dropped in Nine Sons (a type of meatball) to deep fry until golden brown before removing them to drain excess oil. Then she added water and sugar into the pot on low heat until frosty before adding in the fried meatballs while continuously tossing them until coated in sugar frosting—a plate of beautifully fragrant frosted meatballs was completed. The frosting was white as snow; the outer layer was crispy and sweet while the inside remained tender and delicious. Compared to traditional meatballs made with pork, Bai Tang's mixed meatballs had a richer flavor. After tasting one, Bai Tang decisively packed two-thirds into her backpack, leaving only one-third for the village chief.
With all dishes completed, Bai Tang's cooking skill increased by ten percent experience points to reach intermediate level. She placed all dishes onto a large tray and peeked outside to find no players near the village chief; carrying the tray outside.
"I can smell that aroma making my mouth water! Good thing I chased those players away; otherwise my image would have been ruined," said the village chief happily while stroking his beard, his eyes nearly glued to the tray.
"This is Braised Wolf Meat; you should give it a try," Bai Tang offered chopsticks to the village chief.
“Wolf Meat? Oh my, Old Man, I've never eaten Wolf Meat in my life.” Old Man eagerly picked up a piece of Wolf Meat and tossed it into his mouth, “Delicious, delicious!”
After swallowing the meat, Village Chief Old Man mumbled contentedly, “It's still better in the game! In reality, wolves are protected animals, so you can't eat them at all!”
Once he finished speaking, Old Man realized he had misspoken, as there was still a player standing nearby!
Bai Tang chuckled, “Old Man, it's fine. I know Chu Donglai and Ling Xin. I've heard about you from them.”
Old Man felt relieved and laughed heartily, “So you're a friend of Donglai! Are you also an employee of Yuanhang?”
“No, I'm not!”
“Oh right, employees of Yuanhang have to play NPCs and can't play the game themselves.” Old Man pulled out a bracelet from his chest and handed it to Bai Tang, “Since you're a friend of Donglai and have completed the task well, I'll give this bracelet to you!”
The dazzling name made Bai Tang squint: Step Void Bracelet, Celestial Grade, Infinite Space, bound and cannot be traded. Bai Tang touched the corner of her mouth, relieved that she didn't drool. However, just the six words Celestial Grade and Infinite Space made her jaw drop. How could her luck be so good? If only this Step Void Bracelet could be brought into reality. Her system backpack only had one hundred slots; any excess items could only be stored in the guild's estate. Unfortunately, the guild estate didn't have the same unlimited preservation function as the backpack, preventing her from collecting all her favorite foods.
“Candy Store, you're already level ten now, right? Here, this is a Pass. Go to the village entrance's Carriage Shop and find Old Ma. If you get there in time, you might catch the first carriage to Main City.” Village Chief pulled out a yellow paper from his pocket with his left hand and handed it to Bai Tang, while his right hand continued to eat.
Bai Tang took the Pass, surprised as she asked, “Has someone really reached level ten already?”
She thought she was leveling up the fastest!
“Yes, quite a few! Nowadays, young people are all focused on grinding monsters and leveling up; they don't take a moment to appreciate their surroundings or experience ancient village life. Where else can you find such beautiful scenery and fresh air…” Village Chief Old Man continued eating while lamenting that today's young people lacked vision. They rushed forward without noticing the scenery by the roadside and would only realize their regrets at his age when they learned to cherish things.
“Well then, I’ll head to the Carriage Shop first. Take your time eating, Old Man! ” Bai Tang hurriedly bid farewell to Old Man and quickly made her way to the Carriage Shop. Anyone who has played online games knows that those who reach Main City first will receive many opportunities and rewards. Now that she had a chance, Bai Tang wanted to seize it. Unfortunately, she was still a step too late; when she arrived at the Carriage Shop, the first carriage to Main City had already left the village.
The carriage seated ten people, costing two taels of silver per person for fare. For players who could only earn a few copper coins from monster hunting—game currency exchange: one gold = ten taels of silver; one tael of silver = one hundred copper coins—the fare was quite expensive. The carriage would only depart once ten people were gathered; if there weren't enough players but someone was in a hurry, they would have to pay for any empty seats. Bai Tang was sure that there wouldn't be enough players for the carriage; those who could pay such a hefty fare were definitely not ordinary—after all, when the game just launched, the exchange function for real money and game currency wouldn't open until tomorrow.
After agreeing with Old Ma at the Carriage Shop that she would be notified once they gathered enough people, Bai Tang walked under the village's central peach tree and took out equipment she had obtained from a cave to set up shop. Although all the equipment she displayed was basic gear, its attributes were better than those in clothing stores. She wasn't worried about not having players buy them; plus, she had also prepared some delicious dishes on the side. The enticing aroma wafted through the air, attracting some food-loving players.
A male player swallowed hard; although that braised pork looked delicious, he didn't have any money left—his funds were reserved for buying equipment and potions. Equipment? The male player's gaze landed on some gear nearby.
“How much are these pieces of equipment?”
"Clothes and pants are six hundred copper, wrist guards two hundred, shoes three hundred." Bai Tang sat against a Peach Tree, lazily responding.
"Why are you selling them for more than the system store?" the Male Player asked unhappily.
"First, take a good look at the attributes of these items!" Bai Tang said, chewing on a weed, glancing sideways at the questioning Male Player.
The Male Player, puzzled, used Identification Technique on the equipment. The results astonished him; the attributes of these items were significantly higher than those of ordinary equipment, nearly matching Green Equipment, yet the price was only half that of Green Equipment.
"I'll buy this set of clothes, pants, and shoes for one silver and five hundred copper!" the Male Player eagerly purchased a full set of equipment.
Seeing the Male Player's actions, other players became curious about the equipment Bai Tang was selling. They picked up an item to inspect it and immediately pulled out their money to buy. Thus, a buying frenzy erupted in front of Bai Tang's stall.
Bai Tang had only a few pieces of equipment: two outfits, three pairs of pants, four pairs of shoes, three wrist guards, and one Bronze Sword. In less than two minutes, all the equipment was sold out. Players who failed to purchase anything left reluctantly but lingered nearby to get close to Bai Tang and inquire about where she obtained the equipment.
Bai Tang closed her eyes, ignoring everyone's inquiries and attempts to befriend her. Many players found it dull and left in disappointment, while foodies remained drooling over several plates of delicacies.
Circle Puff was a foodie who loved to eat. She never played Online Games; her brother had introduced her to a virtual holographic world where she could enjoy various delicious specialties without gaining weight. Thus, this girl rushed into the world of Six Realms without hesitation. (To be continued)
