Bai Tang allocated one-fifth of the food to both S Province Base and Beijing Base, while three-fifths was handed over to O Haosheng for processing. He could decide which base to support first. The bases established during the apocalypse do not all follow the orders of the Central Base; human nature is unpredictable. In the face of interests and power, many commands issued by Beijing Base go unheeded. If it weren't for the safety of the general public, Beijing Base wouldn't have distributed Energy Guns to those bases at all. Now that they have food and confidence, if someone wants food, they must comply; otherwise, they will not receive anything.
"Bai, can you buy a manned Aircraft that is not affected by any magnetic field?" O Haosheng asked. His current office was located within Zhong Lan Hai. This place was the central government office area of Huaguo before the apocalypse, and ordinary people could not enter. Even Bai Tang had never been inside. After Kyoto was recaptured, the government immediately moved back to Zhong Lan Hai and opened it to the public. Now, ordinary people can come in and see this place that they once looked up to before the apocalypse.
"Is there? Do you need it? Is it to restore communication between bases?" Bai Tang asked. Once communication between the bases was restored, he wouldn't have to deliver supplies to each base one by one.
"That's one purpose," O Haosheng replied. "The main goal is to rescue the survivors in Haidong Province. Surrounded by sea, the animals in the ocean have mutated, and with occasional tsunamis, life there is extremely difficult. After satellite communication was restored yesterday, a distress signal was sent out. The Leader instructed us to quickly rescue the survivors on Haidong Island back to the mainland."
"Sure! I will buy several Aircraft that can carry thousands of people for you!" Bai Tang readily agreed.
O Haosheng expressed his gratitude: "I knew Bai was a good comrade! On behalf of all the people of Haidong Province, thank you!"
Bai Tang couldn't stand this kind of official tone. He quickly bid farewell to O Haosheng and left Zhong Lan Hai. After some time of reconstruction, Kyoto had returned to its original appearance, but its population had decreased by more than half. Bai Tang thought about how he once gambled on stones in Panjiayuan and sighed; he wondered when the bustling atmosphere of Panjiayuan would return? Where did Zhang Feng go? Is he okay? And what about Sheng Qingxi and Cao Xue? He hoped they were all safe!
"Master!" Yi Qian ran over, waving his arms. The boy had applied for leave specifically because his Master came to Kyoto.
"Not bad!" Bai Tang patted his disciple's chest with satisfaction. After some time apart, the boy had progressed from early Foundation Establishment to mid Foundation Establishment. Although his Spirit Pearl helped him, a significant factor was also his hard work.
The boy smiled with squinted eyes at his Master's praise: "Master, there's a free market outside the Forbidden City. Do you want to go take a look? I can accompany you!"
He completely ignored Karen Adrian. The boy was quite displeased with this person who could follow his Master closely yet always looked like someone owed him money.
A free market? There might be many interesting things there.
"Sure!"
The free market consisted of various stalls, mostly set up by Hunters who had scavenged supplies from towns near the capital; there were all sorts of items available, but no food for sale.
Bai Tang stopped curiously at a stall selling plastic flowers and silk flowers. They looked lifelike and beautiful. Unfortunately, no one showed interest in these items; fresh flowers could be eaten, but what use were fake flowers?
"How much for these fake flowers?"
The Stall Owner lazily glanced at Bai Tang: "If you buy them all, it's ten basic Crystal Cores!"
Ten basic Crystal Cores were equivalent to ten yuan before the apocalypse—truly too cheap.
"I don't have Crystal Cores; how about I trade you food instead?" Bai Tang wouldn't give away any Crystal Cores since they contained energy.
The Stall Owner's eyes lit up, shaking off his previous laziness, and he straightened up, saying, "Take two packs of instant noodles or a pound of rice, you can have these!"
Bai Tang took out a bag of rice, at least two or three pounds, and handed it to the man. Then she waved her hand and gathered all the fake flowers into a package. There weren't many Ability Users with space abilities, but there were enough, so Bai Tang's actions didn't attract the attention of others.
Seeing the obvious excess of food, the Stall Owner's face broke into a wide grin as he snatched the bag and stuffed it into his arms before quickly running away. Other stall owners saw Bai Tang being so generous and eagerly called her over to their stalls, showing her great enthusiasm.
One Young Person shouted loudly, "Hey there! I have various DVDs of pre-apocalypse television dramas and movies, as well as albums from various singers. Want to buy some to take home?"
A nearby Stall Owner pulled him back, saying, "With only two hours of power supply per base, who has extra electricity to watch DVDs?"
The Young Person shot a glare at the Stall Owner beside him and leaned closer to the two men, saying, "I also have rare DVDs from Teacher Cang! Want some? I can sell them to you at an 80% discount!"
The two men responded with silence.
Karen Adrian at the noodle stall showed no reaction; who was Teacher Cang? He didn't know! Yi Qian, being a good child, certainly didn't know either! The Young Person was throwing his charm at blind people!
Bai Tang couldn't help but laugh inwardly. She patted the Young Person on the shoulder and asked, "Do you have any game discs?"
Initially frustrated by Karen Adrian's and Yi Qian's lack of interest, the Young Person perked up at Bai Tang's question and excitedly replied, "Yes! I have all kinds of single-player game discs. Which ones do you want?"
"I'll take them all! And those DVDs and movies too. Oh, and give me Teacher Cang's discs as well!" Bai Tang's words made the Young Person's face flush. Oops, how did he forget that Ability Users had sharper hearing than ordinary people? She must have overheard his earlier conversation with the two boys. This girl was interesting; she actively wanted to buy Teacher Cang's discs. Was she a tomboy or what? His younger sister once told him that male homosexuality was called Danmei and female homosexuality was called Yuri; could this girl be a white lily?
"That'll be fifty basic Crystal Cores. If it's food, then ten packs of instant noodles and five pounds of rice!" The Young Person's eyes sparkled; trading this pile of useless "junk" for five pounds of food was incredibly lucky for him. He hoped to encounter more wealthy fools like this in the future!
"Master, why are you buying so many useless things?" Yi Qian asked in confusion.
Of course, it was to bring joy to Bai Dad and Bai Ma in the Red Mansion World (Bai Tang had kept Teacher Cang's discs). In the Future World, Bai Tang bought two wind turbines and solar panels so that Bai Dad and Bai Ma could enjoy modern conveniences even in their backward ancient world. All the servants in the Manor were bound by death contracts; betrayal would not occur. After witnessing light bulbs that glowed at night and televisions that played grand performances inside boxes, the servants regarded the Bai Family as deities and treated them with deep respect. They wouldn't dare share any miraculous events involving the Bai Family; otherwise, they might anger the deities and face punishment.
"Some are useful!" Bai Tang replied vaguely as she handed a ten-pound bag of flour to the Young Person. He happily took it and ran off with his prize.
Seeing Bai Tang buy another pile of useless items, other Stall Owners became even more eager and surrounded her trio to promote their goods. As a result, Bai Tang ended up purchasing two sets of cartoon books, two laptops (the advanced future brain computers were too sophisticated for Bai Dad), three razors, one television set, and one DVD player (for the servants to use during their free time at night). This action caused the servants' loyalty levels to skyrocket since they were thrilled with these gifts. She spent over a hundred pounds of food in exchange for what everyone considered worthless items. Bai Tang became known among the Stall Owners as a generous benefactor.
Satisfied with her purchases, Bai Tang led her half-trained apprentice out for a meal. Currently in Kyoto, there were only three restaurants open for business, all struggling—mainly because they offered too much food that ordinary people couldn't afford; only Hunters with surplus Crystal Cores would occasionally come by for better meals.
Bai Tang ordered carbon-grilled ribs, spicy-sour shredded potatoes, and three bowls of wontons filled with first-grade Mutated Beast meat—delicious beyond compare—leaving all three very satisfied. After their meal, as they exited the restaurant, suddenly Bai Tang grabbed something with her right hand: a snake-shaped dagger radiating purple light appeared between her fingers.
"Master!?" Yi Qian exclaimed in surprise.
Bai Tang smiled, "I didn't expect there are still Cultivators in this world. I wonder how you managed to anger them, to the point they used a high-level Treasure to assassinate you!"
Yi Qian protested, "Master, I have always followed the rules of the base and the army, and I haven't provoked anyone!"
"Well, maybe you got in someone's way," Bai Tang comforted the young man. "Don't feel wronged; this Treasure is quite good. I'll give it to you!"
He tossed the dagger to his disciple. The dagger struggled continuously in Bai Tang's hand, and as soon as it had a chance, it tried to escape. Unfortunately, its speed couldn't match Yi Qian, who caught it in one swift motion. The dagger originally had an owner, but that person was only at Qi Refinement Level Six. Yi Qian, being in the Foundation Establishment Period, easily erased the original owner's Divine Sense, making the dagger recognize him as its new master.
"Let's go!" Bai Tang said.
"Master, have you found the person who ambushed us?"
"I couldn't find them. That person either has a treasure that blocks Divine Sense detection or has already run far away; I didn't notice anything!"
"Oh!" Yi Qian didn't say anything further and obediently followed Bai Tang back. The ambusher's level was so low that he couldn't harm him at all since he was already in the mid-stage of Foundation Establishment.
Once the three of them had walked far away, a woman's figure suddenly appeared in a nearby alley. As soon as she landed, she spat out a mouthful of fresh blood. Having been forcibly stripped of her Divine Sense from the Treasure, she had sustained serious injuries! She glanced in shock at the direction where Bai Tang and the others had left and dared not linger any longer. She quickly ran out of the alley and disappeared into a corner of Kyoto.
