"Mosu, what do you think about us learning to ride horses?" Huang Wei suddenly suggested. It had been over ten days since the Christmas ball, and the new year had already arrived. However, since that day, Cheng Mosu had often seemed distracted, which puzzled Huang Wei. She nudged Cheng Mosu with her elbow, "Hey, what are you thinking about?"
"Nothing... nothing at all," Cheng Mosu replied flustered. When she looked up again, she wore her usual gentle smile. "Did you just say... riding horses?"
"Yes!" Huang Wei appeared a bit excited. "We're already bored enough as it is and can't go out looking for fun like my brother does. If we could go ride horses to pass the time, that would be great, right?"
Cheng Mosu pondered for a moment before nodding, "That makes sense." Her mood had dropped significantly; perhaps spending some time riding would help her shift her focus to something else.
"Let's go right now! We'll head to the racetrack," Huang Wei said with a playful expression. "But my family's driver went to pick up my brother. The Ministry of Transportation has been particularly busy lately. Can you call Uncle Liu?" Cheng Mosu nodded and picked up the phone to dial.
The two chatted and laughed over tea for a while, discussing the latest hairstyles, the trendiest qipaos, and the best coffee. Eventually, their conversation began to dwindle. Huang Wei's maid approached at an opportune moment and whispered, "Miss, there's a young gentleman outside named Shaoyi who says he’s here to take you both to the racetrack..."
Cheng Mosu's hand holding the teacup suddenly paused as if something had struck her heart. Her lips slowly formed a smile. "It's him..." Before she could think about why it wasn't Butler Liu picking them up today, she quickly said, "Let him in."
"Oh?" Huang Wei noticed something was off and giggled. "Shaoyi? Who is that? A new servant in your house?"
"Not a servant," Cheng Mosu replied lightly, feeling inexplicably uncomfortable hearing Shaoyi referred to as such. Huang Wei knowingly nodded and smiled at the young man who walked in; he was indeed handsome and exuded an extraordinary presence. She glanced at Cheng Mosu again and noticed her unhidden smile and increasingly bright eyes, causing Huang Wei to chuckle knowingly.
"Shaoyi, why are you here today? Where's Uncle Liu?" Cheng Mosu's smile was so radiant it seemed ready to overflow, lifting her spirits as well. However, Shaoyi remained composed with a cold demeanor as he replied, "Butler Liu had some matters at home. After dropping off the young lady this morning, it seems several relatives came to visit him unexpectedly; he went to handle family affairs. I'm the only one besides him who can drive."
Cheng Mosu nodded, feeling a slight dizziness fade away under his polite response. Huang Wei found their interaction amusing—one trying to distance themselves while the other leaned in closer—sparking her interest immensely. She studied Shaoyi closely and was momentarily taken aback; although he wore a mask that day, his aura and physique were rare enough that she immediately recognized him as Cheng Mosu's dance partner from that night.
"Hello, Shaoyi," she extended her hand for a handshake. "This is our second meeting, right? The last time I saw you was at the ball; your German was excellent, and your dance with Mosu was wonderful."
"You're too kind," Shaoyi said politely as his facial muscles moved slightly, making him appear even more handsome and resolute.
Huang Wei leaned closer to Cheng Mosu and whispered softly, "Mosu, you really have good taste; this Shaoyi is quite impressive. No wonder you've been so distracted lately." Cheng Mosu's face flushed red as she hurriedly interrupted her, "What nonsense are you talking about? I haven't..."
"Do you know yourself?" Huang Wei blinked and wrapped her arm around Shaoyi's, "Let's go, take us to the racetrack." She turned to Cheng Mo Su and smiled slyly, as if teaching Cheng Mo Su how to approach him. Cheng Mo Su's face turned even redder, and she hurriedly covered her face and followed.
It was still early afternoon, and there were hardly any people on the street. Shaoyi quietly watched the cars weaving through the alleys. Cheng Mo Su sat beside him, glancing sideways and noticing that his deep-set eyes seemed to shine with a clear light.
"We're here." He stopped the car, not in a flattering manner but with a gentlemanly gesture typical of Western etiquette, opening the door to help the two ladies out. Huang Wei nodded in satisfaction and whispered, "Mo Su usually seems oblivious to feelings, but this time his judgment is really good."
"Stop saying that." Cheng Mo Su pinched Huang Wei, her blush deepening.
"Misses, how late do you plan to play? I'll come back to pick you up then."
Huang Wei pouted and mischievously glanced at Cheng Mo Su, "Why don't you join us? Seeing how well you drive, I bet you can ride a horse too." What kind of strange logic is that? Shaoyi raised an eyebrow, about to refuse when he heard Huang Wei continue, "My family's driver can both drive and ride horses. If he weren't taking my brother to the Ministry of Transportation today, I wouldn't let you accompany us, would I?"
Shaoyi paused slightly. Going to the Ministry of Transportation? He felt a weight in his heart; she must know quite a bit about the current situation in the North. With that thought in mind, he nodded, "Alright." Huang Wei smiled ambiguously at Cheng Mo Su and pushed her toward Shaoyi, "You teach Mo Su; I'm going to find a master over there."
"No need to find anyone." Shaoyi said with a natural pride and assertiveness in his tone, "I can teach both of you together." He led over two horses. "Ladies, go change into riding gear first. You need to remove all your jewelry like necklaces and earrings since you are both beginners; you'll also need to wear helmets." He tossed two helmets to Cheng Mo Su and Huang Wei with a casual smile, "Please."
Cheng Mo Su's delicate hand brushed over the helmet as she lowered her head with a faint smile, "Then I'll go change first; wait for me."
Huang Wei nodded with a smile and turned to look at Shaoyi, finding these two people quite amusing. Just as she was about to make a joke, Shaoyi spoke first, "Does your brother work at the Ministry of Transportation? Has he never taught you how to ride?"
"No!" Huang Wei pouted, "That useless brother of mine can't ride at all. Dad said I'm just a girl so he never taught me."
Shaoyi's gaze drifted further away as he said, "What a pity; horses are gentlemen among beasts; riding is like making friends with gentlemen." Huang Wei nodded, "You really know quite a bit; no wonder Mo Su is interested in you." Shaoyi's eyes flickered with complex emotions that quickly vanished; he fell silent, and the atmosphere became slightly awkward. Huang Wei realized her timing was off and hurriedly changed the subject, "If only my brother had half your talent, hahaha."
"Your brother..."
"Oh, they have been busy with meetings these past few days. You might see him next time you come to my house."
Shaoyi paused for a moment and casually asked, "The Ministry of Transportation must be very busy lately; there have been quite a few changes in the North, right?"
"You know about it too?" Huang Wei's words came pouring out. "Let me tell you, things have been quite big in the North recently. Even someone in a high position like my brother doesn't know what's going on; Dad doesn't tell him anything. However, I heard that the blockade in the North is going to be lifted soon."
Shaoyi tightened his fists, and a cold light flickered in his eyes. Whether the lifting of the blockade was good news or bad news for him...
Suddenly, Huang Wei sneezed, pulling Shaoyi back to reality. He couldn't help but sigh; these young ladies were only wearing a little clothing in the middle of winter—it's no wonder they would catch a cold. He took off his coat and handed it to Huang Wei. "You should wear my coat for now; once you change into your riding outfit, you'll warm up while riding."
Huang Wei smiled and suddenly wanted to tease him, her eyes full of mischief. "You help me put it on."
Shaoyi paused for a moment, suddenly recalling how excited Cheng Mo Su looked when the first snow fell that day. He had worried she would be cold and draped his coat over her. To this day, he could still clearly remember her petite figure wrapped in the coat and the faint dimples at the corners of her lips. He glanced at Huang Wei and ultimately shook his head. "Miss, you should put it on yourself."
"Stingy!" Huang Wei pouted in frustration after being rejected. She ran in front of Shaoyi and grabbed his hand. To an outsider, their playful tugging seemed innocent, but to Cheng Mo Su, who had just changed into her riding outfit, it appeared as flirtation between a man and a woman. She felt a dull ache in her chest and was filled with mixed emotions.
"Mo Su, are you ready?" Huang Wei released Shaoyi and made a face at him before jogging over to Cheng Mo Su. "Then I'll go change!"
Cheng Mo Su nodded, looking at Shaoyi with a complicated expression. After thinking for a long time, she finally spoke up. "Just now... you and Huang Wei seemed to be having a great time chatting. What were you talking about?"
Shaoyi looked at her slightly flickering gaze and remained silent for a moment before saying, "Nothing." Cheng Mo Su's heart sank; she clearly saw the way he raised his eyebrows while joking with Huang Wei—something he had never shown her before. Feeling increasingly suffocated, she wanted to vent her frustrations. She mounted her horse and, before Shaoyi could react, she cracked the whip in her hand, sending the steed galloping away like an arrow released from a bow.
