Shangguan Shaoyi raised the corners of his mouth, forming an upward arc. Rong Yuqiao was slightly taken aback; she had expected to be rejected, but she did not anticipate this reaction from Shangguan Shaoyi.
With a gentle push, the two of them fell onto the soft bed together. Her cold skin pressed against his warm body, and a strong fragrance wafted from her hair into his nostrils. He slowly leaned closer to her, bringing his face near her rapid breaths, his nose brushing against her earlobe, sending shivers throughout her body.
Black as Ink's gaze grew colder. When she least expected it, he pulled her up, leaving marks on her soft, smooth skin where he had gripped her tightly.
He stared at her intently. "You've been getting close to Jin Aisin Gioro Yunqi lately." It was not an inquiry or an investigation but a statement of the fact he had come to understand.
Rong Yuqiao paused for a moment, instinctively biting her lip as she smiled and said, "That's not true."
"You always have that expression when you lie." Shangguan Shaoyi's sharp gaze enveloped her as he lit a cigar and silently smoked it, filling the air with a sense of desolation.
Rong Yuqiao took a deep breath, watching his long and powerful fingers. She felt an inexplicable heat rising within her, and her heart ached painfully. Shangguan Shaoyi walked over to the window, looking out at the city shrouded in darkness. He opened the window, and the cool night breeze swept into the room, causing her to shiver and gradually easing her agitation.
"Are you feeling better?" he asked casually as he extinguished the cigar.
"Much... better," Rong Yuqiao replied softly, lowering her head with a bitter smile at the corners of her mouth.
"Don't associate with Jin Aisin Gioro Yunqi anymore; she's not normal." He turned his back to her. She looked at the tall figure that had protected her since childhood, realizing that this figure was gradually drifting away from her reach.
She hesitated for a moment and muttered, "I don't know who that is, and I haven't been in contact with her." She couldn't believe that Shangguan Shaoyi could discern any clues in such a short time.
Shangguan Shaoyi snorted coldly and began to straighten his military uniform. He turned around to gaze at her; his icy stare held an investigative quality that made her tremble. Before she could resist, she had already conceded and slowly lowered her gaze.
"Yuqiao, you smell entirely like Jin Aisin Gioro Yunqi. Your mannerisms and style are becoming more similar to hers. I don't want you to step into an irretrievable deadlock." His eyes held a hint of concern akin to that for a friend, yet it filled her with sorrow.
Struggling to stand up despite trembling all over, she exclaimed, "If you could marry me, why would I step into any irretrievable vortex!" She shouted at him loudly and grabbed the ashtray beside her, throwing it at him. He did not dodge; he allowed the ashtray to shatter above his head as blood slowly trickled down his cheek.
"Lin Gege..." Rong Yuqiao was momentarily stunned and hurried forward to check on his condition. "I... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to... why didn't you dodge...?"
"Why should I dodge?" His pitch-black pupils fixed on her, as if his heart were being gnawed at. "If it makes you feel better, then it doesn't matter how." Once, Rong Yuqiao had been innocent and carefree; if it weren't for him, she wouldn't have become the way she was now.
"But even if I feel better, you still won't marry me; you'll only marry Cheng Mo Su, right?" Tears streamed down her face as she asked the question she had always feared knowing the answer to.
Shangguan Shaoyi nodded without any hesitation, almost as soon as her words fell. She instantly seemed to collapse, sitting on the ground, surrounded by coldness. Her eyes shone with a chilling light as her hands cruelly clawed at her own skin. "Lin Gege... we can't go back... not just us... even I... can't go back anymore."
He lifted her away from the cold ground, gazing at her just like he did when they were children.
She forced a bleak smile, devoid of light. "Lin Gege, how wonderful it would be if time could turn back. But having taken a step forward, how could I possibly turn back? Actually, I know about the conversation between my father and you all. If Miss Cheng were to be the legitimate wife and I were to be the concubine, would you marry me?"
"Yuqiao, you don't need to do this. You will meet someone suitable for you; don't put yourself in a difficult position." He rejected her without a hint of hesitation.
"Why are you being so cruel to me?" Rong Yuqiao hugged her knees, burying her tear-streaked face. "Have I given less? Am I not as good as her? I don't want someone who wholeheartedly loves me; I just want you. Even if you ignore me, it's fine; I just want to be by your side and watch you every day."
The pale blue sky began to reveal the morning light, and the sun rose far faster than they could imagine.
As dawn broke and morning mist surrounded them, the outside world grew noisy as everyone began their new day.
"It's dawn; I'll take you home." Without waiting for her response, Shangguan Shaoyi picked her up and placed her in the military vehicle, driving towards Rong Family Mansion.
Rong Hai was anxious about his daughter not returning all night. When Shen Deputy Officer came to explain the situation, his worried heart couldn't relax either. He had almost spent the entire night awake at the gate, waiting for his daughter's return.
Seeing Shangguan Shaoyi's military vehicle approach finally brought him some relief.
"Lin, I'm counting on you." Rong Hai quickly reached out to take over Rong Yuqiao, who was being supported by Shangguan Shaoyi.
"Yuqiao has a bit of a fever. Let her rest at home. I'll come to see her in a few days," Shangguan Shaoyi said, having also not slept all night, his eyes bloodshot.
Rong Hai nodded, holding his daughter close. He couldn't bear to scold her and could only say, "How did you end up like this? Yesterday, Deputy Officer Shen reported that you wanted to jump into the lake. What on earth were you thinking? Hurry back to your room and rest."
Rong Yuqiao lightly smiled and nodded, her thick black hair disheveled around her waist. She had lost a lot of weight, making her eyes appear unusually large and her chin even sharper.
"Brother Lin." As Shangguan Shaoyi turned to get into the car, he heard her call and had to stop again, gazing at her intently.
"Do you remember that you promised to marry me?" she said with a slight smile, as radiant as a rose, her fair cheeks tinged with crimson. "Last night... I was already yours."
Rong Hai was taken aback and quickly looked at Shangguan Shaoyi, who frowned slightly, his gaze unusually cold.
Having navigated the officialdom and business world for decades, Rong Hai could easily discern the truth behind his daughter's words. He felt nothing but frustration; his daughter was beautiful and came from a good family—how could she end up like this because of a man? It infuriated him. "Yuqiao! Shut your mouth and go rest properly!"
"Dad, I'm telling the truth!" Rong Yuqiao stood her ground. Her words left both Shangguan Shaoyi and Rong Hai momentarily stunned; she spoke so confidently that it almost seemed true.
Rong Hai waved his hand at Shangguan Shaoyi. "You should go rest first. I will get to the bottom of this matter. Regardless of whether it's true or not, I hope you can still consider my advice. As you can see, Yuqiao is already in this state; you wouldn't want her to continue like this, would you?"
