"Don't go." Cheng Mo and Shangguan Shaoyi both looked out the door, where Shangguan Yiting stood dressed in riding gear, her whip waving through the air with great vigor.
"Sister." Cheng Mo was anxious to get up, but stumbled. Shangguan Shaoyi quickly caught her in his arms. She raised her eyes, clear as water yet as firm as rock. "Sister, I must go. Miss Rong's words have left no evidence behind; I cannot argue against them. But I believe that the truth will eventually come to light."
"Mei Mei Mo, how can I express my concerns for you? You need to be more cautious at your age." Shangguan Yiting grasped her hand and adjusted the moonlight shawl draped over her shoulders. "This matter is clearly aimed at you. If you go to the police station, those behind the scenes will surely exploit it."
Cheng Mo furrowed her brows slightly. She was not well-versed in these schemes and felt that she had nothing to be ashamed of, like unburnt gold that could withstand fire. Yet she had not considered the treachery of the world, where black and white could be reversed, and right and wrong could be indistinguishable—especially for someone like her.
Shangguan Shaoyi pulled her down to sit beside him, his tone gentle, his eyes seemingly melting her worries away. "Mei Su, we all believe in you." She looked up at him; his pitch-black eyes always brought her immense comfort.
He gazed at her for a long time before softly saying, "Mei Su, pack your things. In a few days, I'll take you back to Shanghai."
"What?" Cheng Mo was taken aback. "But... my father hasn't returned yet; there's no rush..."
"What are you afraid of? I'll accompany you." He smiled gently, watching as her cheeks gradually flushed red. Cheng Mo felt a pang of annoyance as she lowered her eyes; he had guessed her thoughts again. He vowed to protect the tranquility and beauty that surrounded her.
Cheng Mo's water-colored eyes rippled with emotion, a faint smile gracing her lips. "Shaoyi, thank you. But... I must go. Firstly, I don't want this incident to cause discord between the Shangguan Family and the Rong Family; secondly, I don't want to bear such an unclear accusation."
Shangguan Yiting smiled and praised her: "Mei Su, I truly admire your spirit! With our Shangguan Family protecting you, you can rest assured that those police officers won't dare act recklessly! I want to see what moves that cowardly thief hiding behind the scenes can make!" She struck the wooden floor with her whip fiercely, shaking the air around them. Her smile was bold and striking. "If I catch that thief, I'll break his bones and scatter his ashes!"
Cheng Mo smiled lightly, feeling the grip on her hand tighten a bit more. She met Shangguan Shaoyi's pitch-black gaze directly and saw through his worries at a glance. Leaning against his shoulder, her smile was serene and beautiful, as if time had not shattered.
"Shaoyi, I won't get into trouble. You can take me to the police station with confidence."
It had been raining for several days, and Cheng Mo slept uneasily. As dawn broke slightly, she woke up—perhaps from a nightmare in the middle of the night that left her startled. Her hand touched the cold glass; warmth and coldness stirred within her heart alternately—one moment she was on cloud nine, the next she fell into despair.
He opened the door, revealing his tall figure.
"Let's go." She linked her arm with his, but he remained silent, and the air was filled with tranquility.
At the entrance of the police station, Rong Hai had been waiting for a long time.
"Miss Cheng." His sadness had diminished significantly, returning to his usual rational demeanor. "I don't mean to make things difficult. Yu Qiao is my only daughter, and I must investigate the cause of her death thoroughly. If there are any shortcomings, please don't take it to heart, Miss Cheng."
"Not at all." Cheng Mo smiled gently. "I believe I have done nothing wrong, so I am not afraid of the gates of hell." She turned to look at Shangguan Shaoyi, smoothing out his furrowed brow with her small hand, her smile serene.
Shangguan Shaoyi felt a stir in his heart and called out to her, but she seemed not to hear and turned to walk inside.
"You all! Tell your director to treat Mo Su well. If I come to pick her up in a few days and she has even a scratch on her, I'll hold you accountable!" Shangguan Shaoyi's eyes were cold and sharp, and the surrounding police officers hurriedly nodded in response. They understood the relationship between Cheng Mo and Shangguan Shaoyi all too well; they dared not mistreat her and could only treat her like a revered deity.
Rong Hai smiled and patted Shangguan Shaoyi on the shoulder. "Come on, let's go for a walk outside."
Shangguan Shaoyi nodded, and the two walked side by side down the empty street.
After a moment of silence, Rong Hai quietly spoke, as if asking him but more like asking himself, "Do you miss Yu Qiao?"
Shangguan Shaoyi remained silent. The shiny boots clacked against the wide pavement, and the gun at his waist was particularly conspicuous. His face showed no expression, but his dark eyes held an unusually deep gaze.
Yu Qiao...
Purple mist wafted from the incense burner, and heavy curtains blocked out any sunlight from entering the room.
The long, fluttering eyelashes trembled slowly, and the curve of her lips remained enchanting yet carried a hint of mockery. "Are you sure that Shangguan Lin sent Cheng Mo to the police station?" She lightly parted her ruby lips, her voice hoarse, as her fingertips twisted the cigarette that slowly burned. It was only when it nearly touched her fair skin that she extinguished the cigarette.
"I saw it with my own eyes!" The man in black, kneeling on the ground, supported himself with his hands, his head bowed low.
Yun Yun had already changed out of her purple-red Qipao into a Japanese kimono. Her hair was styled into an elaborate updo, and she held a small cloud fan in her hand. In the midst of laughter and conversation, her fingers lightly waved, causing countless families to be destroyed and many lives to be lost. But that was not her goal; her aim was the country before her, this land that was already riddled with holes!
"You did well, but there's no need to follow Shangguan Lin anymore. He is deeply suspicious of me. That day he even sent his deputy to search the house. If it weren't for the tunnel in our room, I would have been exposed long ago." Yun Yun smiled enchantingly, yet she could not hide her coldness.
The subordinate raised his head and bore an uncanny resemblance to Lin Hongyao's deputy; in fact, they were the same person.
"Since I am no longer needed and my mission to follow Lin Hongyao has failed—allowing Lin Hongyao to die at Shangguan Lin's hands without contributing anything to our Great Japanese Empire—I will now commit seppuku! Please inform Inoue-sama of my apology and my loyalty to the Great Japanese Empire!"
"Stop." Yun Yun commanded sharply as she stepped in front of him. Her beautiful brows slowly knitted together as she helped him rise. Her gaze was eerily enchanting. "You must know that Shangguan Lin is not an ordinary person. I initially intended to use a woman to control him like Lin Hongyao, but he simply wouldn't fall for it. And it's impossible to eliminate him by force; we have yet to find a new force we can control in Northeast China."
"What does Miss mean?"
"Hmph, I see his only weakness clearly." Her eyes emitted a chilling malice, resembling a ghostly figure. "His backyard is already on fire; if his formation is slightly disturbed, chaos will ensue. Since that's the case, I'll add fuel to the fire! I don't believe he will have the rationality to think when chaos strikes; amidst the turmoil, I will seize control of him and make him a puppet of our Great Japan."
Her gaze slowly drifted toward the distance. "And you—since you are destined to die due to your failed mission—rather than dying now, why not follow my orders and contribute your last effort for our Great Japanese Empire!"
