Shangguan Shaoyi and Shangguan Yiting walked side by side into the mourning hall, where the memorial tablet displayed the radiant smile of Lin Yuqiao. A few high-quality incense sticks were placed on the table, and the overwhelming fragrance made them cough a few times. It was at this moment that he truly understood that Yuqiao was gone and would never return.
His heart ached with sorrow as his fingers, lightly calloused, grasped the incense. He bowed several times, his gaze lingering on the black-and-white photo for a long time, reluctant to look away, as if by staring at it, the flower-like girl in the picture might awaken.
"Xiao Lin, Yiting, you’re here." Rong Hai reached out to hold them, as usual, as if nothing had happened. Beside him, the once ethereal Madam Rong now appeared gaunt and grief-stricken, undoubtedly tormented by the pain of losing her daughter.
Shangguan Yiting could no longer hold back her tears and embraced Madam Lin tightly. "Madam, please accept my condolences."
Madam Rong did not respond; her tears flowed like a dam that had burst, unstoppable.
Rong Hai sighed and spoke for his wife. "She’s fine... Your sadness is no less than mine. You three grew up together like siblings, and now this has happened..."
"Uncle Rong, please stop." Shangguan Yiting felt a sharp pain in her heart. This was her fourth funeral... one for her father, one for her husband, one for her son, and now... for sister Yuqiao...
Suddenly, Madam Rong raised her Eyes, glaring fiercely at Shangguan Shaoyi. The usually gentle woman had lost her reason at this moment. "What are you doing here! You’re so enchanted by that vixen Cheng Mo that you probably can’t tell east from west! If it weren’t for you two, my daughter wouldn’t have died!"
"What nonsense are you talking about! Shut your mouth!" Rong Hai hurriedly interrupted Madam Rong. "Your daughter has passed away; do you want to disturb her soul in her mourning hall?"
"I can’t be as calm as you! I only have this one daughter; she is my everything!" Madam Rong said in shock, recalling that this was the first time she had argued with her husband.
Rong Hai seemed taken aback that his wife would argue with him and fell silent for a moment.
Shangguan Shaoyi looked at the scene before him and felt engulfed by loneliness; staying any longer felt meaningless. He stepped out of the mourning hall, the cool breeze brushing against his chiseled features.
"Young Marshal..." Shen Mingliang was waiting outside and didn’t know what to say upon seeing him like this.
"You stay here and wait for my sister; I want to walk alone." Without further explanation, he brushed past Shen Mingliang and slowly strolled toward the distance, the sound of his military boots echoing with each step.
Shen Mingliang obeyed and entered the mourning hall to find a place to stand.
Suddenly, Shen Mingliang saw a pair of enchanting Eyes. The owner of these Eyes, though glistening with tears, showed no sign of sadness; in fact, there was a hint of a smile on her lips. His heart sank as he recalled that this girl was Jin Yunqi, whom he had encountered several times before. The two pairs of Eyes locked onto each other, instantly igniting sparks between them.
Yun Yun smiled lightly, enchanting and ghostly.
The surface of the lake at night was eerily quiet; if it weren't for the breeze brushing against his face, one could hardly feel the breath of life.
Shangguan Shaoyi tossed the half-smoked cigar into the lake, his cold gaze fixed on the distance.
Slow footsteps approached from behind. His hand quickly reached for the pistol at his waist, and when he turned around, he was taken aback. "Uncle Rong?"
Rong Hai smiled gently, revealing a hint of sadness and melancholy in the tranquil night. He stood next to Shangguan Shaoyi and took out a cigar. Shangguan Shaoyi lit it for him, and a swirl of smoke enveloped them. Rong Hai's weathered face bore an indescribable expression. "Yu Qiao mentioned you often come here when you're feeling down."
Shangguan Shaoyi did not respond or show any expression; only the color in his cold eyes dimmed slightly.
"Yu Qiao's greatest wish was for you to always remember her and not forget her." Rong Hai said with a sarcastic smile. "It seems she succeeded; you can never forget her now, even though the price she paid was her life."
Shangguan Shaoyi frowned slightly, his gaze wandering. The lake remained calm, and after a long pause, he asked, "Did Uncle Rong go to the police station today?"
Hearing him change the subject, Rong Hai did not press further and nodded slightly. "The chief said Yu Qiao had lost her sanity before her death. What she said cannot be used as testimony. Miss Cheng will be released in a few days, so don't worry."
"I'll go see Mo Su." He said in a low voice, a complex emotion flickering in his eyes.
The police station was heavily guarded, especially the room where Cheng Mo Su was held under strict military supervision. But rather than a prison cell, it felt like an isolated space; the room was well-equipped and brightly lit as if it were daytime. Shangguan Shaoyi's special car stopped at the entrance, and all the guards saluted him as he got out of the car, his posture tall and his expression cold.
"Young Marshal!" The head of security opened the door for him. "Miss Cheng is doing well; please rest assured."
Shangguan Shaoyi nodded and walked straight inside. The clock had already struck midnight; she had long since gone to sleep.
His cold eyes moved slightly; he only wanted to take a glance at her sleeping face before leaving. However, as soon as he saw her, Lin Hongyao's words echoed in his mind. He coldly tugged at the corners of his mouth, dismissing that person's words from his thoughts as he quietly approached her side. Noticing that she was still frowning in her dreams, gripping tightly onto a corner of the soft blanket as if dreaming of something terrifying.
"Shaoyi!" She suddenly opened her eyes, startling him. Their eyes met directly for a moment; Cheng Mo Su's face flushed with color, her long black eyelashes fluttering slowly as her jade-like cheeks broke into a smile. "What brings you here?"
"I came to see you, but I didn't expect to wake you up." He rubbed her jet-black hair, his handsome face and gentle eyes bringing comfort.
Cheng Mo shook her head, denying, "No, I just had a nightmare."
"Oh? What was it about?" He raised an eyebrow.
"I dreamed... I dreamed..." A flush deepened on her jade-like skin. Just thinking about that dream, though absurd, still tugged at her heart. For a moment, she couldn't find the words. Seeing Shangguan Shaoyi smiling at her, she finally whispered, "Some very strange things. But you mustn't laugh at me or... get angry..."
"Okay, I won't laugh at you or get angry," he said softly.
"Well, I dreamed that we went home to see my dad. He originally agreed to us being together, but on the day of the wedding, he suddenly said he wanted to kill you. No matter how I begged him, it was useless. In the end..." Her voice grew smaller as she spoke, as if these events were truly happening before her eyes. Her tone even carried a hint of tears, and Rose-Colored Lips were tightly pressed together.
Shangguan Shaoyi hugged her tightly and gently interrupted, "Alright, dreams are often the opposite of reality. Don't think about it anymore." He wasn't superstitious and naturally didn't believe that Mo Su's dream had any connection to reality. However, if what that officer said was true, Mo Su's father could very well be the one providing arms to Lin Hongyao. When that time came, how would he face Mo Su?
"What's wrong? What are you thinking about?" Cheng Mo lifted her small head from his embrace. Shaoyi never showed coldness in front of her; he must be thinking about something serious. Could it be that something happened in the military? She felt anxious and quickly asked, "Shaoyi, is it something in the military..."
"No, don't overthink it." Shangguan Shaoyi looked deeply into her eyes, his soft feelings reaching into her heart. She seemed to blush even at her ears, yet Shaoyi's gaze remained unchanged as he continued to look at her. "I was just thinking that Mo Su must always be by my side."
Cheng Mo smiled slightly, like a pure lily or an elegant orchid, her gentle smile filling his heart with warmth.
