That night, she had no idea how she got through it.
The bed was soft and plush, her head buried in the equally soft pillow, tears streaming down from her swollen eyes, soaking into the white pillowcase. She rubbed her eyes, which were red like a rabbit's, and suddenly the starlight outside became blinding; the moon dimmed in comparison, its piercing light casting remnants of brightness against the window.
Once her tears dried up, dawn broke.
She stepped out of her room and looked at the two men in black standing at her door, as if waking from a dream. Lightly biting her Rose-Colored Lips, her Eyes fixed on her pale toes, she asked, "What are you doing standing here? How long will you be here?"
"It was ordered by the master. From today on, we are responsible for protecting the young lady. Wherever you go, we will follow."
Protecting? She sarcastically curled her lips; it was clearly surveillance.
Ignoring the two men, she walked into the hall where her father was already up early, sitting there eating breakfast and reading the newspaper. She stubbornly pretended not to see him and sat down on the other side, mechanically eating her breakfast, which tasted like chewing wax.
"Su'er, don’t just eat; drink some milk." Cheng Yi extended a cup towards her. She looked up at her father, not understanding how he could act as if nothing had happened. Was this the difference between adults and children? Although she considered herself no longer a child.
Ding-dong, the doorbell rang.
Cheng Mo's dry Eyes suddenly sparkled as if infused with fresh water. Cheng Yi naturally knew who was at the door and stopped Feng Yin from going to open it, walking to the door himself.
The warm spring breeze brushed against him; although he stood backlit, it did not diminish his imposing demeanor. His handsome profile reflected in Cheng Mo's eyes; she saw clearly that his brows were slightly cold, yet his gaze was bright and clear. He removed his hat and stood straight, showing respect to Cheng Yi.
"Mr. Shangguan." Cheng Yi's face showed no emotion. "I have thought it over; Su'er is still young, so let’s put the engagement matter on hold."
Shangguan Shaoyi's tall figure paused for a moment but quickly regained composure. The light in his eyes turned toward the weary Cheng Mo and felt a chill in his heart. "Are you worried that Mo Su will suffer if she follows me, which is why you disagree?"
This time it was Cheng Yi who was taken aback; he tightened his heartstrings. This Shangguan Shaoyi was more perceptive than he had imagined.
Shangguan Shaoyi paused and said, "If it's because of this, you can rest assured. I won't let you fund me, nor will I involve the Cheng Family in these troubles. If I lose, Mo Su can go home at any time."
Cheng Yi pondered for a moment, feeling somewhat swayed. Shangguan Shaoyi was indeed a good person, treating Su Er well and someone who could be entrusted for a lifetime. But if they became in-laws, how could he possibly stand by idly?
Shangguan Shaoyi saw through his concerns with a cold gaze and a firm voice. "The Southern Government currently has a much greater chance of winning. Although there are many talented individuals there, most are arrogant and unwilling to submit. I believe that given time, I will be able to break through from the outside and dismantle them from within, as easily as rolling a ball down a slope."
"No." Cheng Yi's tone suddenly turned sarcastic. "You must understand that your strength is vastly inferior to theirs. The fact that you can say such bold words shows that you are still too young and impulsive."
He looked at Shangguan Shaoyi's increasingly cold Eyes, his heart no longer wavering. "Your actions and words are sharp and arrogant, showing no sign of caution. In contrast, the Commander of the Southern Government has always been patient and reserved. Just based on this point alone, I would place my bets on the Southern Government! Mr. Shangguan, your feelings for my daughter do indeed move me, but this is a chaotic world; please forgive me for being against this union."
"Dad!" Cheng Mo Su hurried over but didn't even get a glance at Shangguan Shaoyi before Cheng Yi reached out to close the door.
"Why do you have to be like this? What does he have to do for you to agree?" Cheng Mo Su's water-colored eyes were filled with anger as she stared motionless at her father.
Cheng Yi turned his face; Cheng Mo Su couldn't see his expression and could only hear his slow, deep voice. "No matter what, I will not agree." He took a few steps, the sound of his footsteps echoing in the large room. "Su Er, who is right or wrong will be proven by time."
"Fine, we will let time prove it." Cheng Mo Su's eyes were like still waters, her rose-colored lips moving mechanically as she repeated her father's words.
She walked a few steps toward the crystal-like staircase, catching sight of the two large men with their dark and massive figures in her peripheral vision. Above her was the unchanging brilliance, and beside her were people who had never distanced themselves.
What should she do? Should she continue to stubbornly oppose her father? She felt the darkness surrounding her growing larger, almost swallowing her whole.
"Dad!" She called out, and Cheng Yi stopped in his tracks, turning to look at her.
With a determined tone and her snow-white neck arched in a perfect curve, she said, "I want to have a serious talk with you. Is that okay?"
Cheng Yi nodded.
Cheng Mo Beneath Su Baixi's jade-like appearance was an evident determination. Her voice remained gentle, yet it carried a hint of chill. "Dad, I really like Shaoyi very much. You're worried that I might face misfortune in the future, but the suffering I endure now is a hundred times greater than what I might face later. We don't know what tomorrow will bring; why must we calculate the future instead of cherishing the present?"
"Are you done?" Cheng Yi looked at his daughter with indifference, two generations, two eras, and countless insurmountable gaps between them.
She reached out and held her soft wrist, the coldness of her fingertips penetrating to the bone. "Dad, no matter what, I want to marry him. I love him, and I love you too. I don’t remember what my mother looked like; I only remember that when I was little, it was you who let me ride on your neck and show off. I don’t remember my mother’s voice; I only remember that it was you who sang to me every night to help me sleep. Why do you make me choose between two people I love?" Her face was as pale as paper, her voice trembled violently, and her eyes were filled with tears that blurred her vision.
"Su'er!" Seeing her about to faint, he hurriedly reached out to support his daughter, repeatedly telling himself not to soften his heart.
"Dad..." Cheng Mo Su's delicate hand climbed up his arm. "Please, promise me."
The air spread quietly, time drifted silently; he neither nodded nor shook his head, his gaze fixed on his daughter's eyes—those pure and beautiful eyes shrouded in sadness and loneliness. He tightly closed his eyes as his heart slowly sank.
He steeled himself and said, "Su'er, don't blame Dad; I can't promise you."
Cheng Mo Su was momentarily stunned as she struggled to break free from his embrace. Her eyes were filled with a cold light, confusion and sorrow intertwining, making it hard for her to breathe. Cheng Yi panicked and hurriedly said, "Su'er, back then I suffered scars because I didn't listen to my parents..."
"Yes." Her smile carried a powerless sadness and helpless struggle, like a cold dagger piercing her father's heart. "You caused a lot of harm; whether to Mom or to me, you've already driven Mom to death. Now you want to drive me to death too?"
Cheng Yi's pupils suddenly dilated in surprise as those long-buried memories within him suddenly fermented. His lips trembled slightly. "Who... who told you these words..."
