She sat on the soft bed, hugging her knees, watching as the sky gradually darkened and faded. Under the soft yellow light, delicious dishes were laid out, but their colorful appearance suddenly lost her interest. The tranquil air lacked any pleasant elements; no matter how vibrant the colors were, they all tasted dull.
Her Water Eyes rippled slightly as the window was gently pushed open, and a tall figure entered through the broken window.
Her nose tinged with a sour sensation, and without realizing it, she plunged into his embrace, letting the familiar scent of gunpowder surround her, which made her feel at ease. Shangguan Shaoyi smiled faintly, gently holding her. As his gaze fell upon the untouched dishes on the table, his sword-like brows furrowed tightly. "Why aren't you eating again?"
She lifted her Eyes to look at his slightly stern handsome face.
His hand held hers tightly as he gazed for a long time before saying, "Eat something." She lowered her Eyes and fell silent. The soft light illuminated her beautiful face, casting a dim shadow beneath her Eyelashes. He sighed and said helplessly, "I'll eat with you."
Cheng Mo's lips curled into a smile as her Fingertips lightly touched his brow, smoothing out the deep furrows. They exchanged smiles and sat on the floor, holding fruits and hot tea in their hands, savoring it.
"Mo Su." He called her name, but his gaze was fixed on the distance. "Something happened in Feng Province; I have to go back tomorrow."
She was taken aback, gripping the steaming hot tea tightly in her hands. Unsure if she was holding too tightly or lost in thought, the hot tea spilled out, scalding her delicate jade-like hand. She inhaled sharply, her beautiful brows knitting together in distress. He frowned and quickly grabbed burn ointment to apply to her wound, the cooling balm seeping into every pore.
"I'll send someone to Shanghai. After I finish my business, I'll come back. Where there's a will, there's a way; I will definitely get your father's consent." He didn't look at her pale face but focused intently on treating her injury, tracing circles of tenderness on the back of her hand.
"Father won't agree." She spoke up, her trembling hand caught tightly in his grip. Weakness and sorrow were evident in her pupils. He paused for a moment, intending to ask more, but she turned away and fell silent. He didn't press further but quietly watched her with gentle eyes. She pulled her hand from his grasp, her dark hair covering her face as she buried herself deeply in his embrace without saying a word.
How could she tell him that her father had already betrothed her to someone else...
"Shaoyi..." She finally spoke up, biting down hard on her Rose-Colored Lips until they tore and blood beads emerged; she still wouldn't stop.
Shangguan Shaoyi felt an ominous premonition pass through his heart; something was very wrong with Cheng Mo Su tonight. He lowered his voice and asked, "Mo Su, what exactly happened? Tell me, and we will bear it together."
"Nothing much," she quickly replied. What could Shaoyi do? She couldn’t do anything either; it would only add to the sadness. Rather than both being upset, it was better for her to endure the pain alone. The command from her father was hard to fulfill, and her Water-colored eyes deeply fixed on him; perhaps after today, they would never see each other again...
Shangguan Shaoyi's hand touched her cool cheek, and only then did she realize she had been crying. The tears fell softly, not hot at all, landing on her like raindrops. He wiped away the tears from her face; no matter how anxious he felt inside, it was useless. In front of her tears, he felt helpless and lost for the first time.
"I'm not going to sleep tonight. Let's just sit here until dawn, okay?" She suppressed her tears, raised her face, and forced a strained smile.
"Mo Su..." He tightened his pupils, feeling frustrated with himself for being burdened with trivial matters. He had to catch a train back to Feng Province in the middle of the night; how could he stay with her until dawn?
Her Eyes drooped down, tiny beads of tears hanging from her long Eyelashes. After a long pause, she finally revealed a faint smile at the corners of her lips, but her voice was filled with sorrow and despair. "I understand."
He adjusted her shoulders, his pitch-black Eyes gazing at her. His large hand caressed her smooth skin. Suddenly, he pulled her towards him; her body leaned straight into his direction. She slightly raised her gaze as Rose-Colored Lips were tightly sealed by him. She closed her eyes, feeling a wave of heat between their lips as he kissed deeper and deeper, just like their feelings for each other—endless. She could barely breathe as her soft and weak hands wrapped around his neck while he playfully teased her tongue, making her tremble all over.
Sensing her slight shivers, he supported her delicate head with his hand, the fragrance of her hair filling his fingers. He kissed even more passionately and tenderly; their breaths rose and fell in agitation. She couldn't withstand such an assault and gently nestled beside him, feeling the frequent kisses like raindrops falling upon her—allowing sweetness and sorrow to overlap, beauty and sadness to resonate.
Finally, he released her. He leaned close to her ear, his voice flowing gently like water. "Mo Su, wait for me."
"Okay." She agreed without a second thought. The commands from her parents and matchmaking were all cast aside. Every time his lips touched hers, all her worries vanished into thin air; even her ability to think faded away. Suddenly, she felt a bit scared—afraid of becoming increasingly dependent on him and afraid of losing his world.
He smiled deeply; his eyes clearly reflected her appearance as he reached out to ruffle her hair. In the blink of an eye, he had moved to the window. Cheng Mo Su's heart stopped for a moment; she felt as if she were caught in a stone that could not be turned or rolled away. What about her father? If he insisted on this matter, she would inevitably be stubborn against it—what would happen then?
She came back to reality only to find that he had vanished without a trace.
Shangguan Shaoyi landed steadily on the ground, adjusting the collar of his military uniform. Black Eyes were tightly closed, as if trying to imprint something. When he opened them again, he returned to his usual cold demeanor and took a step forward.
Suddenly, something soft grabbed his hand. He turned his head and froze in place. In the early spring morning, the wind from Jiangnan brushed past, bringing waves of warmth along with her sweet fragrance subtly floating in the air. He looked at her faint yet stubborn smile, a deep expression that left an indelible mark in his eyes. He gazed into her clear Eyes, like a stream or the sky, flowing far and wide, pure and beautiful.
"Mo Su, why did you come down? It's dangerous, do you know that?" His concern for her tinged his tone with reproach, but more so with pity.
"I know." Hesitating before making a decision, she sighed in relief after deciding. She linked her arm with his and softly said, "I saw you leave and followed without thinking; perhaps heaven wants me to follow you for this lifetime." Yet in her soft gaze was a shining determination. "Shaoyi, take me away, just like this, take me back."
He frowned slightly. "Mo Su, stop joking. Do you know what this means?"
"I know." Her light smile was particularly powerful; how could she not understand? This meant a severance from her father and a permanent farewell to her previous life. She had thought making such a decision would be difficult, but she didn't expect it to be so easy. All she wanted was him; she only wished to be with him.
"Mo Su, listen to me, go back. Given time, I will definitely persuade your father."
"It's too late." Cheng Mo lowered her Eyes, her delicate hand resting between his elbow trembled slightly. "My father... has betrothed me to someone else."
Shangguan Shaoyi's pupils tightened slightly. She raised her head, biting her red lip, her eyes filled with determination. "Shaoyi, take me away."
