The curtains were being blown by the wind as she lay on the soft pink and white bedspread, her water-colored eyes fixed on the ceiling, her emotions a mix of various feelings. Outside the door, there was a faint sound, softly saying that Mr. Xiao had arrived.
She turned her head to look at the train ticket placed on the table; the date was today. She casually picked up her luggage, and in the wardrobe were various qipaos made for her by Shangguan Shaoyi. Her delicate fingers glided over them, but the soft fabric now felt like it weighed a thousand pounds, making it hard for her to bear.
She randomly chose an ink wash color qipao, lightly tied her hair up with a magnolia hairpin as an embellishment. Looking at herself in the mirror, her snow-white skin contrasted with her eyes that sparkled with brightness.
As she opened the door, Xiao Zuowei was momentarily taken aback. He reached out to take her luggage and looked at her radiant eyes beneath her dark hair, saying, "You look really beautiful today..."
She blushed slightly, raised her gaze to meet his, and smiled as beautifully as an ancient woman would, "Thank you."
He led her downstairs. Shangguan Yiting had been waiting at the door. Seeing that Cheng Mosu had not changed her mind about last night's events, he finally breathed a sigh of relief. He smiled awkwardly at Xiao Zuowei and pulled Cheng Mosu aside, saying, "Miss Cheng, last night you asked how serious his injuries were. I told you the truth; you must keep your promise and not return to Northeast after going back to Shanghai."
She smiled gently and nodded. Shangguan Yiting then let out a long sigh of relief. "Now he thinks you are heartless for not visiting him despite his serious injuries. He will probably give up on you in the future. You don't need to explain anything; just treat these days as old dreams from the past. This is better for you and for our Shangguan family."
Cheng Mosu maintained a light smile on her face and no longer paid attention to Shangguan Yiting but turned her gaze back to Xiao Zuowei, grabbing his arm. "Brother Zuowei, let's go."
Xiao Zuowei looked at her snowy profile and did not inquire about what they had just discussed; he simply smiled at her. No matter what Cheng Mosu said or whether there was a reason behind it, he was willing to comply.
Once they exited the Shangguan family gate, she showed no reluctance and did not look back even once; she just held onto Xiao Zuowei's hand and walked forward quickly, seemingly eager to escape from there.
When they reached a shaded area under a tree, she glanced back to confirm that Shangguan Residence was completely out of sight before stopping to catch her breath. Xiao Zuowei supported her so she could lean on his arm for a moment's rest but felt quite puzzled. "Why are you walking so fast? You won't miss your train, will you?"
"No, I'm not going back to Shanghai," she lifted her eyes, which were clear and bright. He instantly understood her thoughts; his heart was struck suddenly. How could he have thought she had given up on Shaoyi? When he saw her this morning, the sparkle in her eyes was something only present when facing Shaoyi!
He felt a slight pain in his heart, but still wore a smile on his face as he quietly looked at her. "Are you going to the battlefield? This is too chaotic."
"Previously, Miss Shangguan concealed the fact that Shaoyi was seriously injured. Shaoyi must have been resentful towards me all along. Yesterday, she told me that Shaoyi was not seriously hurt, but I can no longer fully trust her. I need to see for myself," Cheng Mo Su's voice was soft yet firm, and Xiao Zuowei knew he could not persuade her otherwise. He nodded; as long as Cheng Mo Su wanted it, he would do everything he could to help her achieve it.
The night was particularly thick, yet the sounds of cannon fire never ceased around them. After days of battle, both sides had suffered heavy losses. Shangguan Shaoyi sat in the dimly lit command room, cold light illuminating the map before him. His wounds had not healed; even the slightest movement brought sharp pain. He remained calm and composed, planning defenses, focused solely on leading everyone to victory as soon as possible.
Finally, the bombardment ceased. He rubbed his temples; his tightly pressed lips were already dry.
"Young Marshal, I'll go get some water," Shen Mingliang said as he stepped out of the tent. The air was filled with trembling sounds; every step he took was fraught with lurking danger. Just as he began to relax, he saw two figures and paused in surprise.
Cheng Mo Su smiled gently at him, a beauty that seemed to belong to another world. Her eyes shone brightly in the darkness, serene amidst the chaos, as if she did not belong to this realm at all.
Shen Mingliang glanced at Xiao Zuowei beside Cheng Mo Su and nodded slightly but then acted as if he had not seen Cheng Mo Su at all, brushing past her until she called out to him, prompting him to stop.
"Deputy Officer Shen, how is Shaoyi doing now?"
Upon hearing this, Shen Mingliang felt a surge of anger. Now she understands concern?! Where was she before?! He shot Cheng Mo Su a fierce glare and said angrily, "This seems to have nothing to do with you!"
"Deputy Officer Shen, how can you speak to Xiao Su like that? Please watch your tone!" Xiao Zuowei interjected in defense.
"My tone? What's wrong with my tone? This is still considered polite!" Shen Mingliang was even more furious and reached out to grab Xiao Zuowei by the collar. "Do you know what this woman has done?! The Young Marshal is unconscious and may not survive much longer. I called her, and she was sulking instead of coming! Tell me, what kind of person is this?!"
Xiao Zuowei felt a surge of anger himself; throughout their journey, Cheng Mo Su had explained everything clearly to him. He knew this was all orchestrated by Shangguan Yiting. Normally gentle, he suddenly grabbed Shen Mingliang's collar in a fit of rage.
"Brother Zuo Wei." She hurriedly stepped forward to mediate, "Please stop fighting, this is not the time for that. Brother Zuo Wei, let go of Deputy Officer Shen. It's not his fault; you can't blame him for misunderstanding."
Shen Mingliang looked at her beautiful face and felt inexplicably angry. "Stop pretending to be a good person! Don't think that this can cover up your ugly heart!"
"Shut up!" Xiao Zuo Wei could not tolerate anyone insulting Cheng Mo. He stepped forward and threw a punch, having graduated from the officer academy, and this punch was particularly powerful, hitting Shen Mingliang squarely on the nose, causing him to bleed profusely.
Cheng Mo gasped and quickly supported Shen Mingliang, but he pushed her away with a backhand, causing her to fall to the ground.
"Xiao Su." Xiao Zuo Wei hurried over to help her, his gaze filled with concern and urgency. "Are you hurt anywhere?"
Cheng Mo rubbed her scraped knee, smiled gently, and shook her head lightly. She felt a slight pain in her heart, knowing she had been too reckless just now, and showed an apologetic smile.
"Deputy Officer Shen, where have you been for so long?" A cold voice came from inside the tent. Although she hadn't heard it in a while, she could easily recognize its owner. She hugged her knees slightly, and around her was a deathly silence; no one spoke, and even breathing became cautious.
Seeing there was no response, Shangguan Shaoyi had no choice but to step out of the tent. His pitch-black eyes momentarily froze as they fell upon the three disheveled individuals: Shen Mingliang with blood streaming from his nose, Xiao Zuo Wei in disarray, and...
He took a deep breath to suppress his inner turmoil. Ignoring Cheng Mo completely, he raised his hand toward Shen Mingliang. "You come in; there's no need to fetch water."
Shen Mingliang responded with an acknowledgment. Shangguan Shaoyi turned back into the tent while Cheng Mo stood there in a daze, feeling the coldness from him that she had never experienced before. A sourness filled her nose as tears began to form in her eyes, dripping down without any gaps on her skin.
