The light was exceptionally bright, shining on two boys bound tightly. They held their heads high, exuding an air of defiance that made one momentarily think they had captured two heroes.
Shangguan Shaoyi stood straight, his dark eyes fixed intently on them. His voice was cold, fists clenched tightly, "Why are you doing this?"
"We're going to smash this vixen," one of the boys in blue declared proudly. He appeared to be around fifteen or sixteen years old.
Cheng Mo was taken aback; it was the first time she had heard someone refer to her as a "vixen." A pang of pain shot through her heart, and tears sparkled in her water-colored eyes as she looked helplessly at Shangguan Shaoyi.
Naturally, Shangguan Shaoyi was furious. He casually grabbed the boy who seemed powerless and coldly said, "Apologize to Mo Su!"
"Only those who say something wrong should apologize. What we said is true; why should we apologize? I think you should be the one apologizing!"
"Very well!" Shangguan Shaoyi exerted great force and flung him aside. The boy hit the edge of a table and bled, yet he seemed unconcerned, even wearing a slight smile. "You hit me! Haha, you hit me!"
Shangguan Shaoyi's anger threatened to erupt as he glared at the boy, who met his gaze without fear.
Cheng Mo bit her lip and tugged at Shangguan Shaoyi's sleeve, her voice gentle. "Forget it, Shaoyi. It's just a broken glass in my room; thankfully, no one was hurt. Just let him go."
"You vixen, stop pretending!" the boy scoffed.
Cheng Mo smiled lightly, her jade-like cheeks devoid of anger, instead radiating calmness. "Aren't you also pretending? You're terrified inside but act fearless on the outside. Your mind is a mess, yet you pretend to know everything and be capable of anything. How boring!"
"You!" The boy was struck to the core and struggled to find a retort.
"Shaoyi, let them go. It's pointless to argue with someone like this," Cheng Mo said without even looking at them as she turned to leave. Shangguan Shaoyi exchanged glances with Shen Mingliang and nodded; he swiftly picked up the two boys and tossed them out.
Cheng Mo walked down the corridor, her gaze drifting to a painting she had created a few days ago. It had already been framed by Shangguan Shaoyi. The landscape depicted in the painting was beautiful and alluring yet vast enough to evoke fear. She felt a wave of gunpowder-like tension surround her from behind, momentarily believing it was an unimpeded eternity.
She turned her head and looked steadily at Shangguan Shaoyi, her tone calm and her smile light. "Shaoyi, I'm fine. You have a lot to do, so go ahead."
"Mo Su..." Shangguan Shaoyi gently kissed her forehead. The skin where his lips touched felt so cold that it made his heart ache. "Mo Su, trust me. I will definitely solve this matter. You don't need to worry about anything, okay?"
"Mm." She nodded obediently.
"You should move into my room." He affectionately ruffled her hair. "I have to go now; there are many things to handle."
She responded with a sound and reluctantly watched him leave. Without his presence, she felt a chill all over.
She wandered aimlessly back and forth in the corridor, feeling extremely uneasy. How could she truly not worry? She wanted to help Shaoyi bear more of the burden. As these thoughts crossed her mind, she naturally felt a sense of helplessness, lamenting the unpredictability of life and her own limitations.
"Mo Su, I've been looking for you everywhere; turns out you're here." Shangguan Yiting said with a smile. After glancing at Cheng Mo Su's expression, she changed her tone. "What's wrong? Didn't Xiao Lin take care of those troublemakers who were throwing rocks just now? Why do you still look so worried?"
Cheng Mo Su quickly shook her head, revealing a hint of a smile. "It's nothing; I'm just a bit worried about him."
Shangguan Yiting paused for a moment, looking at her slightly pale cheeks. She took Cheng Mo Su's hand and said, "Mo Su, I can see that you genuinely care for Xiao Lin. I also know that you both have feelings for each other and have promised each other a lifetime together. You are already part of our Shangguan Family now, and it's time I shared some things with you."
Before Cheng Mo Su could respond, Shangguan Yiting led her to the garden corridor. Outside, the voices of the protesting crowd continued to rise and fall, sounding particularly clear in the garden. Cheng Mo Su closed her eyes and instinctively rejected those sounds from deep within her heart. Shangguan Yiting smiled and picked a magnolia flower to place in her hair. The contrast of her dark hair with the pure white magnolia made her look elegant and beautiful.
"This is a magnolia I planted myself; it has grown beautifully now," Shangguan Yiting said, no longer as proud as usual but instead showing a hint of melancholy on her face. Seeing Cheng Mo Su staring at her in a daze made her chuckle softly. "Is it that you've never seen me like this? Sometimes even strong people reflect on life; not to mention that memory..."
"Sister, please feel free to say what you want."
Shangguan Yiting took a sip of tea, feeling a bit choked up as memories long buried surged to the surface vividly in her mind. She turned her bright eyes and gently brushed away the tears that were about to gather in them, smiling as she said, "I never thought there would come a day when I, Shangguan Yiting, would share these painful memories with someone. Mo Su, talking about this really means I consider you family."
"Do you remember when I told you about my feelings for your brother-in-law?" Cheng Mo Su nodded. Shangguan Yiting smiled faintly, her smile tinged with bitterness and emptiness. "Actually, that was false. My relationship with him has always been quite poor..."
Su looked at her in disbelief as she continued, "It was me who fell for him. I am naturally proud, and after being rejected when I confessed my feelings, I vowed not to give up and insisted on marrying him. However, he was already married. Seeing that I was unhappy every day, my father had his wife killed to force him to marry me. Such a marriage could not last long; a Japanese woman took the opportunity to come in and be with him. His rationality gradually faded, and he even revealed important military secrets to her, which led to Lin Hongyao accurately causing the plane to explode. Everything started because of me, yet I still survive in this world; perhaps this is heaven's punishment for me."
Su was stunned; this was the first time she had heard of these events, and she didn't know how to react. Shangguan Yiting patted her hand and smiled helplessly, "I thought I was the only one who knew about these things, but Xiao Lin is very clear about it in his heart. The last time he forced me to agree to your marriage, he used this matter."
"Why are you telling me all this, sister?"
"Very simple." Shangguan Yiting took another sip of tea. "First, I want to free myself from this burden. Second, I have been too harsh on you before. A gentleman should treat others with sincerity; I am showing enough sincerity and hope you can sincerely listen to my advice."
"Are you advising me to leave Shaoyi?"
"That's right." Shangguan Yiting smiled openly. "Mo Su, you are very smart; you know what I want to say. You must also know what kind of situation Xiao Lin is facing now. He has already lost the people's hearts for your sake. If you do not leave, the people's hearts may be lost even more, leading to an irretrievable situation. I hope you can think carefully and not make the same mistakes I did. You must understand that mistakes made are like water spilled; they cannot be taken back."
"I understand." Su replied without hesitation, her eyes filled with unwavering determination. "But Shaoyi made me believe in him before, so I believe he can resolve this matter."
"Mo Su, that was just to reassure you. Now that things have come to this point, you and the world have become conflicting interests; if you want him, you cannot have the world, and if he wants the world, he cannot have you. Do you dare to ask him how he would choose between the two?" Shangguan Yiting's lips curled up with understanding in her eyes. "Actually, we both know how he would choose, right?"
Su tightened her grip on the jade cup in her hand and spoke calmly, "Alright, then I will ask him. If he is committed to unifying the country and becomes president, I will leave and not be his stumbling block. If he chooses me, then please do not hinder us; let me retreat with him."
"Good, it's settled then!"
