Time ticked away, and the heart-wrenching pain fermented in the air, spreading to his heart, while the face of Inoue before him resembled that of a man-eating devil, twisted and terrifying. The stench of decay slowly wafted around, greedily slipping through his fingers and embedding itself in the ground. He glared fiercely at Inoue, who looked back at him leisurely.
"Shangguan Lin, let's not beat around the bush. When you killed my adopted daughter Yun Yun, you should have understood that this moment would come. However, if you agree to my terms, I will let both of you live happily together. What do you say?"
Cheng Mosu could no longer remain silent; he summoned all his strength and shouted, "Shaoyi, don't listen to him! The country is in ruins; you mustn't worry about me..."
There was no time to think; the decision made was merely a catalyst for emotions. His eyes, as black as ink, did not look at Cheng Mosu but instead gazed through the dark room toward the distant brilliance. "Inoue, let her go."
"Very well." Inoue smiled wickedly; it seemed he had bet correctly this time. "So, does that mean you agree to my terms?"
"No, I cannot agree to you." A storm swept in; dark clouds loomed over the city as if ready to destroy it. Distant thunder rumbled ominously, and it was unclear who was fated to clash with whom or what would bring about retribution. His eyes were filled with countless bloodshot veins but could not hide his cold demeanor.
"Oh? Then on what basis?"
His brow was clear and bright, showing no hint of fear. "If you can let Cheng Mosu go, then you can take my life at will."
The cold voice carried a visible tenderness. In the chilly space where they stood, emotions unfolded one after another, and the rising panic made it impossible for her to maintain her composure. Tears flowed uncontrollably, and hatred surged within her. Though her voice was weak, it was powerful nonetheless. "Shaoyi... I don't want... you to die."
He ignored her murmurs and continued to stare at Inoue's twisted face. "So, how about it? One life for another—fair enough?"
Inoue seemed momentarily taken aback until he heard the words slice through the air; only then did he respond with a chuckle. "Shangguan Shaoying is truly a lovesick fool; willing to give up his life for a woman—has this been your greatest concession? If you can sign a cession agreement, I guarantee both of you can leave safely."
"Cession is impossible; taking my life is the greatest concession I can make." He spoke coldly as if his life were something insignificant in his eyes; there was not a trace of longing when he mentioned it. "I think you need to make a decision quickly; otherwise, in two hours, my men will level this place to the ground, and you won't be able to escape."
Inoue's expression darkened; it seemed that Shangguan Shaoyi was unwilling to cede the two provinces no matter what, and he could not expend his efforts in vain. Killing Shangguan Shaoyi would ultimately be beneficial for them.
"Inoue-sama, Lord Ono has arrived and wishes to see you," a soldier's voice came from outside the door. Inoue paused for a moment, recalling that Shangguan Shaoyi had also brought Ono along. He hesitated, "Have him wait outside for me. I'll go over now. Remember, keep an eye on these two."
"Yes!"
He took a deep breath, his gaze quietly fixed on her. Her pale cheeks were still stained with tears, and she seemed to radiate a faint blue aura. He stepped forward slowly, his hand, covered with light calluses, gently reaching out to touch her beautiful face.
Unable to contain her inner turmoil any longer, she leaned against his shoulder but didn't know how to dissuade him. She simply nestled against him in silence, allowing her tears to fall silently.
He smiled softly, filled with infinite tenderness. "Mosu, don't cry. I lost Feng Province and should apologize with my life to comfort my father's spirit in heaven. But you must live well and help me see this future world."
"But I want to see it with you." Cheng Mo raised her tear-filled eyes, looking at his indistinct handsome face in the dim light. "I don't want to live without you. If you're here, then I am too."
"Mosu." He gently ruffled her hair, his voice imbued with just the right warmth. "This time attacking Feng Province, we are outnumbered and have many injured soldiers. I cannot send generals away for my personal matters."
She was taken aback, her watery eyes burning. "So everything you said to Inoue was a lie? No one will come in two hours; you really intend to go alone?"
"Yes." He nodded heavily, unable to hide the tenderness in his gaze as it fell upon her. "I have privately handed over military authority to Shen Deputy Officer. If I die, he will take my place."
The surrounding atmosphere was indescribably cold, separating two entirely different worlds. She never imagined he would find himself in such peril because of her, nor did she foresee that their ending would be so abrupt and chilling.
A low and slow breath floated in the air as she looked at him, feeling that the interplay of light and shadow made him seem ethereal and unreal. He had come this time with no intention of returning alive.
She felt as if her chest was being suffocated by a wave of heat, tears streaming from her eyes, unable to be suppressed.
“There must be another way, right…” She raised her pale cheek, holding onto a glimmer of hope.
He smiled gently, ignoring her, and softly covered her lips, savoring the last moments of beauty. Her tears flowed down her cheeks, mingling with his tongue; the salty taste tugged at his heart. There were many things he couldn't let go of, the most important being her.
“Shaoyi, the Pawn guarding the door must be vulnerable; you can definitely escape.”
His dark eyes lingered on her elegant cheek without hesitation. “What about you? This machine binds you so tightly; I won’t leave you behind.”
“Don’t worry about me. Right now, there’s death everywhere and the flames of war continue. Our separation is nothing but a small matter in this world. What you need to do is not protect me but stop the chaos.” After saying so much in one breath, she was slightly out of breath, but she did not hesitate. Her voice was weak, yet her tone was resolute.
He frowned as the door was pushed open again. Inoue stood there with a curious expression, as if he had come up with a new idea.
“Young Commander, I just spoke with Ono. He does not agree with my approach; he advocates supporting you in Feng Province and using your influence for our country's benefit.” He sneered twice, “Now that Ono and I have opposing views, are you satisfied?”
His voice turned serious, his expression cold and determined. “I will not accept either of your plans. You only need to let Cheng Mosu go, and then I will end my life. Now that Ono is here, you wouldn’t want this credit to fall on him, would you?”
Inoue paused for a moment without saying a word, but they heard a tremendous noise coming from outside, as if everything were about to be engulfed. A pungent smell wafted inside, causing everyone to faint uncontrollably.
