She opened her mouth, and he understood her meaning. He quickly helped her up. She smiled lightly, curling into his embrace, her slightly warm skin pressed against his beneath the thin fabric of her clothes. Her delicate feet kicked off the tiring shoes, and there were still faint bruises on her fair wrists from the bindings of the machine.
He held her, and her feather-like long eyelashes flickered in a beautiful arc. The corners of her lips, now regaining color, tightened slightly. Time seemed to freeze as they both remained silent, as if listening to each other's heartbeat was enough to convey all their feelings.
After a long while, her soft voice echoed in the air, “Shaoyi…”
“I’m here,” he replied gently, tightening his grip on her hand a little more to stabilize all her anxious emotions. She looked up at him, and the misty Eyes made his heart tremble. He raised a hand to lightly touch her delicate face. “I will always be here.”
She seemed to feel reassured, resting against his chest, two shallow dimples appearing on her exquisite cheeks. “Am I dreaming...?”
“It’s not a dream; it’s real.” He adjusted her position, his dark pupils filled with tenderness, his voice slow and soothing, like coaxing a child.
She was momentarily stunned; the clear outline was so close yet hard for her to believe that fate still favored them and that they could still exist together. It was as if he understood her feelings; he leaned down and pressed his sweet lips against hers. Her Eyelashes fluttered gently, their intertwined fingers growing warmer. A hot tear slipped from the corner of her eye, burning and bittersweet.
“It’s all over now.” He offered no further explanation; just holding her like this was enough. She didn’t ask anything more but nestled in his arms. Their warmth intertwined as the still air made it hard to breathe. The restlessness in their hearts slowly began to calm but could not completely dissipate.
Cheng Mo’s delicate Fingertips touched the corner of his mouth, pulling it slightly upward into a smile, accompanied by a light smile at her lips. “Shaoyi, it seems like you haven’t smiled at all since you came back.”
He paused for a moment, using all his strength to force out a faint smile, which only made her chuckle lightly as she remarked, “You look worse when you smile than when you cry.”
He covered her eyes with his hand; the Eyelashes beneath his palm trembled slightly, the tickling sensation making his heart skip a beat. “You know I don’t smile much.”
“True, but it seems you’ve smiled even less in recent years.” She sighed softly. Outside the window, the sun had already set in the west. The northern air quickly turned cold without sunlight; the emerging moon faintly emitted a cool light that reflected on the concrete floor, spreading a soft white glow.
She looked up at him, her slightly reddened eyes making him feel an involuntary pang of affection. “Shaoyi, I’m so tired.”
"Then sleep." He held her tightly, his gaze unwavering, "I will watch over you here."
"Mm." She responded softly, feeling another layer of clothing envelop her without opening her eyes, the familiar scent of gunpowder surrounding her heart. She smiled, a long-lost warmth filling every corner of her body. "Shaoyi, tell me a story. During the time I wasn't by your side, what have you been doing? I really want to know..."
He looked down at her snow-white cheek, pausing in silence for a moment before saying, "Meetings, battles, deployments, training."
"Is there..." She suddenly stopped speaking, and a barely noticeable bitter smile appeared at the corners of her lips. Her elegant brows furrowed slightly. "Is there anyone by your side to help you with your troubles?"
He knew exactly what she was asking. Some boring rumors must have twisted in her ears. He had previously dismissed the need to explain but now began to worry about her misunderstanding.
"Aside from Shen Deputy Officer and my sister, there is no one else."
Her delicate fingers trembled slightly, whether from drowsiness or still being half-asleep, she continued to ask, "What about Miss Jiang..."
"I'm not familiar with her." He frowned, feeling that the rumors were exaggerated. "I returned to her father Jiang Shaohao; that was when I met her, but we have only seen each other a few times and I don't have any particularly strong impressions of her." He paused and looked at the peaceful Cheng Mo in his arms, softly saying, "Mo Su, are you listening?"
The beauty in his arms did not respond; her breathing grew increasingly steady. Her eyelashes were dampened with moisture, and her fair cheeks had a faint blush. He smiled gently and pecked her rose-colored lips. "Mo Su, good night."
This night felt exceptionally long as time trickled away through his fingertips. He silently watched her without saying a word or moving an inch; it seemed that by doing so, he could imprint her forever in his heart and no longer face the disturbances of the world.
When the first ray of sunlight shone through the drafty window, she stirred as if about to wake.
"Mo Su, it's still early; sleep a little longer."
"Mm." She replied but struggled to open her eyes, confirming he was by her side. Her fingertips gently brushed against his chiseled face, and a shallow smile appeared at the corners of her lips. "You're still here."
"I have always been here." He grasped her small hand, covering his heartbeat. The emotions inside him surged like a storm, yet it all condensed into such a simple sentence. He never expected that she would be so afraid of leaving him, so attached to his presence.
Su seemed to realize something and hurriedly got up, pulling away from him. The cool air instantly enveloped her delicate body. She lowered her gaze, her voice weak, her cheeks flushed, "I can't believe I slept the whole night like this. Your shoulder must be sore."
"No." He smiled slightly, stretching his body a bit. Black Eyes gazed out the window. "Do you want something to eat?"
"No need." She shook her head, her eyes filled with reluctance. "You should be heading back to the military camp now."
He was momentarily taken aback; her words pulled him back from his paradise into reality. He still had to command the troops and had significant tasks ahead. She smiled gently, propping herself up, her smile elegant and serene. "Shaoyi, you should go now. Don't worry about me. Once I'm feeling better, I'll come find you."
He fell silent for a moment, reluctant to leave her side but bound by duties he had to fulfill. Cheng Yi's suggestion still echoed in his mind.
She has done so much for you, yet only wishes for a stable and peaceful life. Can you give that to her?
Yet this simple thing was something he could not achieve. His ambitions of overseeing the world had dwindled over the years; now all he saw were scars and devastation. He just wanted to bring light back to the land, nothing more.
"Mo Su, once you've recovered, we'll leave together." As soon as he finished speaking, she felt a tremor in her heart. In the past, he would never delay what he needed to do for anyone; yet now…
She looked up at him. His deep gaze was filled with complex emotions, but within it lay a hint of tenderness that only she could see. Her eyes turned red as she gently leaned against him.
