"Young Mistress, a guest has arrived."
"Oh?" She raised her fair cheek, her hands still busy with arranging some flowers. After a few days of working with them, the vibrant colors added a touch of greenery to the large room, bringing her joy. Her gaze remained fixed on the colorful blooms as she absentmindedly asked, "Who is it?"
"It’s Miss Jiang, Jiang Yating."
Her hand, suspended in mid-air, suddenly paused. The sunlight illuminated her figure and reflected in her eyes, where shimmering golden ripples hinted at her slightly fluctuating emotions. With a smile at the corners of her lips, she said, "Please entertain her for me; I'll change my clothes and be right there."
"Understood." Xiao Jing replied and then left.
She stood in front of the mirror, looking at her fair complexion. She reached out to smooth her hair and changed into an Ink Wash Color long dress without any accessories. In her mind echoed the words Jiang Yating had once said to her.
"You are not air; without you, Shaoyi can still live well." Jiang Yating had spoken bluntly. "He told me about the two of you. He thought that by giving you enough time, you would come to your senses and return to him. Who would have thought that after waiting year after year, he wouldn't even see a shadow of you? He is naturally proud and cannot beg you to come back; he also despises forcing others to stay by his side. He is truly fed up with this situation but has to keep his promise from back then. I feel exhausted just thinking about it for him, so you should clarify things with him as soon as possible!"
Her heart sank heavily at those words. Although she now considered them false, she had not received any reliable response from Shaoyi, leaving her feeling somewhat anxious.
But eventually, they had to meet.
She arrived in the reception room and saw Jiang Yating sipping a cup of hot tea. The light yellow dress perfectly covered her slender calves, and her delicate features were complemented by crimson lips. A pair of sapphire blue earrings adorned her sparkling earlobes, and as she drew closer, she could catch a hint of the subtle fragrance surrounding Jiang Yating.
"Consort Shangguan, it's been a while." She noticed Cheng Mo Su standing aside, not looking at her, and took the initiative to speak first.
"Miss Jiang, I hope you have been well." She sat down opposite Jiang Yating, quietly sipping her red tea without saying a word, waiting for Jiang Yating to speak first.
Jiang Yating smiled lightly, surveying the Shangguan Family's villa in New Beicheng. The entire room was designed in a European architectural style, with a complete set of Paris Porcelain displayed on a lacework tea table, exquisite and unique. The European-style lamp with floral inlays on the table emitted a soft yellow warm light, casting a halo over the pure white tablecloth.
"This house is indeed luxurious, but it ultimately cannot compare to the Shangguan Residence in Feng Province."
"Isn't that so?" Cheng Mo replied casually.
Jiang Yating smiled at the corners of her lips, holding a silver knife and fork as she took a bite of tiramisu, savoring its sweetness before continuing, "The Shangguan Family will eventually decline. It’s quite desolate here; it must be difficult for you to live in such a place."
"Miss Jiang once wanted to live here too; wasn't that wish fulfilled?" She was too lazy to engage in further conversation with Jiang Yating and just wanted to send her away quickly to tend to the flowers.
Jiang Yating paused for a moment, then smiled, "Consort Shangguan seems to harbor great hostility towards me. Is it because of my relationship with Shaoyi that you feel dissatisfied?"
She glanced at Jiang Yating, feeling that this woman was somewhat self-absorbed. She had never heard Shaoyi mention Jiang Yating; rather, it was Jiang Yating who kept bringing up Shaoyi. She paused and said, "If Miss Jiang only came to talk about this, then it would be meaningless. If you have other matters to discuss, perhaps we could chat for a while."
Jiang Yating smiled slightly, her teeth like pearls. "Actually, I came today to visit Consort Shangguan and also have something I don’t quite understand that I’d like to ask for your guidance on."
"Please go ahead." She raised her delicate wrist, the ink wash-colored qipao accentuating her unique charm. The fresh scent of perfume wafted through the air as she moved.
Jiang Yating smiled, her teeth like shells. "As Consort Shangguan knows, I was once married to Ruan Yu. The reason for our divorce was that Ruan Yu no longer held any value for the Jiang family; I couldn't possibly stay with someone useless. When the incident happened in Feng Province and Shaoyi was abandoned, it was undoubtedly inevitable. I certainly had no need to joke with my life for him. But Consort Shangguan's feelings are different; I don't understand why you would risk so much to follow Shaoyi."
Cheng Mo furrowed her brows slightly; did Jiang Yating even have a heart? How could she not understand what feelings were? Seeing her frown, Jiang Yating couldn't help but smile. "It seems Consort Shangguan cannot answer my question either. I once heard that my father had married several times before marrying my mother and later combined with her due to interests. Growing up, I never saw them discuss anything beyond interests and situations at home. My mother also taught me how to choose men; since childhood, I have never understood what that kind of passionate love in novels truly is."
Cheng Mo was taken aback, clearly not understanding what Jiang Yating's intentions were in telling her all this.
Jiang Yating curled her red lips and glanced at her sideways. "Since Mr. Chen Mu Yin published his article, the most well-known journalist in Shanghai, Wu Jing, has also written an article attacking our Jiang family, revealing the truth behind that humorous poem from back then. Now public opinion is in an uproar, which is very unfavorable for our Jiang family, while the Shangguan Family is thriving."
She paused and slowed her voice. "Consort Shangguan, anything or anyone I, Jiang Yating, find useful has always been taken at will." Her pupils slightly dilated, and the smile at the corners of her lips became more pronounced. "This time is no exception."
Cheng Mo Su fell silent; Jiang Yating was essentially declaring war on her. The relationship between Jiang Yating and Shaoyi had always been a knot in her heart. She had tried to ask several times but could never bring herself to do so. In her vague memories, it seemed that Shaoyi had mentioned it to her once, but no matter how hard she racked her brain, she couldn't recall it clearly.
"Young Mistress, the young master has returned." Xiao Jing's voice interrupted the thoughts of the two women.
Cheng Mo Su hurriedly stood up and looked towards the door. Shangguan Shaoyi walked in with strong strides; there was a barely perceptible joy in his pitch-black eyes. She felt a sudden flutter in her heart and rushed towards him. He reached out and pulled her into his embrace, tousling her shiny black hair with a look of indulgence in his eyes.
Suddenly, he noticed Jiang Yating and his brows involuntarily furrowed.
"Shaoyi, long time no see." She stood up and smiled at him. He tightened his grip on Cheng Mo Su's arm.
Jiang Yating stepped closer to him, her gaze sliding over the two embraced figures. "Shaoyi, I won't eat your wife; why are you looking at me like that? So, do you have some free time now? Let's have a good talk."
Shangguan Shaoyi coldly stared at her before glancing at Cheng Mo Su in his arms. He relaxed his arm slightly and said gently, "Mo Su, you go back to your room first; I'll come up shortly."
