Shangguan Shaoyi could hardly hide his inner urgency. His firm footsteps sounded steady at first, but upon closer inspection, they revealed a sense of impatience. He pushed open the door, and Xia Yixiang was waiting at the entrance, lightly biting her red lips, her eyes filled with fear.
He didn't even glance at her as he walked past, heading straight upstairs.
“Shaoyi!” she called out to him. He paused slightly, turning back to look at her with eyes that seemed to freeze her in place. She trembled and lowered her head, saying, “I... I just spoke with Young Mistress for a moment before she fainted. I really didn’t do anything; you have to believe me…”
Shangguan Shaoyi's pitch-black pupils held a hint of coldness as he replied in a low, sharp voice, “Whether you did something or not, I’ll know as soon as I ask Mo Su.”
“But what if she is deliberately framing me?!” Xia Yixiang raised her voice in desperation.
Shangguan Shaoyi let out a cold laugh, too lazy to look at her again. “Mo Su wouldn’t be that kind of person. Besides…” He glanced at her dismissively. “You shouldn’t try to dress like Mo Su anymore.”
Xia Yixiang was taken aback, biting her lip tightly. Though she wasn't clever, she wasn't foolish either; Shangguan Shaoyi's meaning was clear. Trying to imitate Cheng Mo Su would only make her look ridiculous. She gritted her teeth in frustration as she watched Shangguan Shaoyi's straight back, feeling a pang of hurt in her heart.
Shangguan Shaoyi pushed open the door to his room, and a wave of fragrance rushed toward him. His hardened heart wavered for a moment before returning to its usual state. Cheng Mo Su had already woken up, leaning against a velvet pillow while quietly flipping through a book. A cool breeze stirred the water-blue curtains, and her long hair cascaded down to her waist. Water Eyes hung low, not looking at him. It was unclear whether she hadn’t noticed his arrival or simply didn’t want to acknowledge it.
He frowned and reached out to close the window, prompting her to finally lift her gaze. A familiar light smile graced her snow-like face. “Shaoyi, you’re back.”
“You fainted; why is the window still open?” His voice dropped a few tones, his gaze becoming slightly stern.
She smiled lightly, raising the corners of her Rose-Colored Lips, tugging at his heartstrings. “It’s really not serious; I just haven’t been resting well lately. Xiaojing and my sister are making too much fuss over nothing.”
His anxious heart eased slightly as he looked around and noticed that neither Shangguan Yiting nor Xiaojing was present; they must have left to give them some space together. He sat on the edge of the bed, recalling their argument from yesterday, leaving him momentarily speechless.
Neither spoke; the silence between them grew heavier and heavier until the chime of the Rosewood clock broke their thoughts.
She put down the book in her hands and turned her head to look at him. "Aren't you going back to the Command Center today?"
"No, I don't need to," he shook his head. "You're sick, so I handed everything over to Shen Deputy Officer and came back to keep you company."
She was momentarily taken aback, a layer of confusion settling on her cheeks. Lowering her Eyes to hide her emotions, she remained silent for a while before raising her gaze to look directly at him. Calmly, she said, "The situation is not good now; you should go back quickly. After all, there are many things that Shen Deputy Officer can't handle alone."
His Black as Ink eyes narrowed slightly, and her heart trembled violently. She knew he would never look at her with such an inquisitive gaze, but now...
"Are you really letting me go back?" He suppressed the anger in his voice and kept his tone even.
She no longer looked at him, turning her eyes away and nodding.
"Alright." He turned without hesitation, pulling open the half-closed door of her room. His steps suddenly halted when he collided with Xia Yixiang outside the door, causing her to bite her lip in pain.
"What are you doing outside?" His tone was even harsher, the flames of anger directed at Xia Yixiang. Rubbing her aching forehead, Xia Yixiang didn't know how to respond. She just wanted to eavesdrop outside the door to see if Cheng Mosu was framing her. However, after listening for a long time, they hadn't even mentioned her name. Just as she was about to leave, he stormed out of the room in a fit of rage.
"I..." She casually fabricated a reason. "I came to see if the lady is feeling better and also... also to invite you for a boat ride."
Cheng Mosu froze for a moment, his gaze shifting to Shangguan Shaoyi. Shangguan Shaoyi was sharp enough to sense the eyes on him from behind. However, he was also in a bad mood; after handing over all matters, he rushed back only to face Cheng Mosu's lack of appreciation. How could anyone remain calm in such a situation?
He reached out and grabbed Xia Yixiang's arm, giving it a casual tug. His voice was neither loud nor soft but just right for Cheng Mosu's ears. "Since there's nothing else this afternoon, I'll accompany you for this boat ride."
"Really...?!" Xia Yixiang's eyes widened in disbelief as she provocatively glanced at Cheng Mosu inside the room. She linked arms with Shangguan Shaoyi and smiled brightly. "Then let's go! Wait for me; I’ll go change clothes."
Shangguan Shaoyi nodded indifferently and closed Cheng Mosu's door without looking back, unaware of how turbulent her tears were at that moment.
Xia Yixiang rarely had such an opportunity, so she quickly changed her clothes, fearing that Shangguan Shaoyi would become impatient. However, as soon as she stepped out of the room, she found that he was nowhere to be seen. After searching carefully, she discovered him at the door. She hurried down the stairs and approached him, calming her breath as she smiled and said, "Did you wait long? I'm ready..."
"Mm." He glanced at her indifferently, his voice flat, "I just remembered there are things to do in the Command Center. You can go boating by yourself."
"You!"
"What’s wrong with me?" His gaze turned even colder and sharper, fixating on Xia Yixiang, leaving her speechless as she could only shake her head repeatedly.
"Very well, if you really want to go, find my sister. Otherwise, go back home and find someone from your family to accompany you." He put on his military cap, adjusted his uniform, and stepped out the door.
Xia Yixiang felt unwilling and followed closely behind him. "You promised to go boating with me; you’re just trying to annoy Madam on purpose, aren’t you?"
He paused for a moment, glanced at her disdainfully, and replied coldly, "I don’t need to explain my decisions to anyone."
Xia Yixiang bit her lip tightly. His steps were quick and steady; to keep up with him, she could only jog. At this moment, she didn’t care about her image and ran alongside him.
Cheng Mosu leaned against the window sill, the cool breeze soothing her restless heart. The flowing water-blue Curtain wrapped around her like a beautiful garment. Her hair danced rhythmically in the wind as her water-like bright eyes quietly watched the two figures. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear; her rose-colored lips were bitten until they bled, and the color in her eyes grew dimmer.
She closed the window and slid down along the wall to the ground, hugging her legs like a wounded child in urgent need of comfort.
