Shangguan Yiting saw Xia Yixiang coming down the stairs and couldn't help but wonder, "Didn't you go to call Mo Su? Where is she?"
"Oh..." Xia Yixiang lowered her brows, her heart racing. Shangguan Yiting was quick-witted; she needed to put on an act before lying. After a moment, she said, "I knocked outside for a long time, but the lady didn't respond. I thought she must dislike me for that..."
Shangguan Yiting pressed her lips together, deep in thought, and stepped upstairs, pushing open Cheng Mo Su's door, her smile frozen on her face.
"How could Mo Su not be in her room? She rarely goes out." Shangguan Yiting felt anxious and without thinking, picked up the phone to call the command center.
"Sister..." Xia Yixiang quickly stopped her. "Shaoyi is currently working hard to regain Feng Province. If you keep bothering him with family matters, how can he focus on his career? I think the lady might just be out having fun with friends and will be back soon."
Shangguan Yiting paused with the phone in hand; the call had already connected. Xia Yixiang's words were transmitted through the line, and Shangguan Shaoyi, holding the receiver tightly, abruptly hung up. His gaze was cold, lips pressed tightly together as he strode into the military vehicle heading towards Shangguan Residence.
Seeing Shangguan Yiting lost in thought and silent, Xia Yixiang felt a bit anxious. "Sister, what's wrong? Why are you like this?"
"I..." Shangguan Yiting came back to her senses. "The call was connected just now; he heard everything you said. He’s probably on his way back now."
"What..." Xia Yixiang tightened her pupils and instinctively looked out the window. The front door was tightly closed with no signs of movement, but she knew that soon enough, a hurried figure would rush in.
Shangguan Yiting and Xia Yixiang sat quietly in Cheng Mo Su's room. Shangguan Yiting still felt some doubts; Cheng Mo Su was always considerate and wouldn't cause trouble for others. It was unlikely for her to leave without saying anything at such a critical moment. Moreover, her intuition suggested that something was amiss.
After pondering for a moment, she asked, "Yi Xiang, were you telling the truth just now?"
Xia Yixiang's heart trembled as she tried to conceal it. "Yes, why don't you believe me, sister?"
"I don't not believe you, I just think Cheng Mosu wouldn't leave without saying anything. She must have left a note or something," Shangguan Yiting said, her eyes lighting up as she looked around. "Come help me find out if she left a note; we might have missed it."
Shangguan Yiting was quick to react. Xia Yixiang frowned but still got up, pretending to search. A sudden gust of chilly wind rushed in through the slightly open window, and the door was pushed open forcefully, stirring up a cloud of dust and bringing a faint smell of gunpowder. She didn't need to turn around to know that the person she had been thinking about day and night had returned.
"Sister, what happened?" Shangguan Shaoyi seemed not to see her or simply ignored her presence.
"This morning, I went out with Yi Xiang to buy a few Qipao, and after we came back, Cheng Mosu disappeared. We searched everywhere but didn't find any notes or anything. Where could she have gone? She wouldn't just leave without saying goodbye again, would she?" Shangguan Yiting felt extremely anxious; a few years ago, she had forced Cheng Mosu away and had felt Shangguan Shaoyi's increasingly cold affection since then. She didn't want this situation to repeat itself.
Shangguan Shaoyi paused, looking at the night sky that was descending outside. The moonlight peeked in slightly as he reached for the light switch, illuminating the dim room. The pillow still held her fragrance, and her serene smile lingered in his mind. He shook his head, his gaze turning cold and desolate.
Suddenly, his pupils constricted as if he saw something; every muscle in his body tensed up.
In that corner, there was no sign of Cheng Mosu's suitcase.
He reached out to open the wardrobe; her clothes were still there, but upon closer inspection, many of her favorite outfits were missing, and her pajamas were nowhere to be found.
A sharp pain began to twist in his chest as painful memories of her departure rooted themselves in his mind, bringing him excruciating agony. His fists clenched tightly, and a fierce glint flashed in his starkly contrasting pupils. He absolutely would not allow this situation to happen a second time! He would never allow her to leave his side again!
"Shaoyi..." Xia Yixiang was startled by the intensity he displayed for the first time but thought this was a rare opportunity to get closer to him. She steeled herself and walked over to him. "Don't be anxious; maybe the lady just..."
"Just what!" Shangguan Shaoyi snapped without even looking at Xia Yixiang. The anger boiling inside him was suppressed deep within as he struggled to control his tone and breathing. He dialed the Command Center. "Hello, Shen Deputy Officer, seal off the railways and check every household. I want to know where Cheng Mosu is right now; even if I have to dig three feet into this New Beicheng, I will find her!"
Shangguan Yiting understood his anger and sorrow at that moment and knew she needed to give him space to calm down alone. She reached out and pulled Xia Yixiang out of the room.
Xia Yixiang's tightly furrowed brows suddenly relaxed, her footsteps retracing as she forcefully pushed away Shangguan Yiting, gathering immense courage to stand firmly in front of Shangguan Shaoyi.
“Shaoyi, if the lady truly wants to hide, there’s no way you would ever find her! But… but I won’t leave. No matter how you try to drive me away, I will never go. I will always be by your side. As long as you look at me, I will be satisfied.”
Shangguan Shaoyi looked at her indifferently, yet he was momentarily taken aback. She had dressed herself just like Cheng Mo Su, even styling her hair in the same way. The subtle strokes of her makeup and the slight lift at the corners of her lips were calculated perfectly. He grabbed her by the neck, causing her to tremble violently. Shangguan Yiting was startled and quickly closed the door before heading downstairs.
“Look at me.” His voice was slightly hoarse but exceptionally powerful, compelling her to open her eyes.
His gaze was no longer as cold as before; instead, it carried a weariness that could only be noticed upon careful observation. She was momentarily stunned, feeling that this was a sign of him opening his heart to her. Her eyes began to well up as she straightened herself. “Shaoyi, whatever the lady can do, I can do too. Whatever she cannot do, I can also accomplish.”
Her smooth fingertips slowly grasped his wrist, using his strength to lean into his embrace. Her gaze gradually brightened; seeing that he did not reject her made her bolder. She leaned in gently toward his tightly pressed lips, but just as she was about to touch them, he pushed her away forcefully, causing her to fall straight to the ground.
