The heavy curtains concealed the bright moonlight, and Shangguan Yiting sat quietly beside Cheng Mo Su, watching her complexion slowly lose its color, observing her rose-colored lips gradually turn pale.
She could no longer bear to look. Her gaze fell upon the photo placed on the bedside. In the picture, a man in military uniform stood tall and imposing. The woman beside him wore an elegant smile, her eyes bright and clear. Her expression slightly faltered as she bit her red lips, "Mo Su, you need to get better soon, you must get better soon."
"Miss, I have already arranged a room for the Young Master. He still wants to return with you," Xiao Jing said quietly from the side.
"Let him go back by himself!" Shangguan Yiting replied without hesitation, her voice carrying a hint of coldness. "At this time, don’t add to my troubles! Mo Su hasn’t woken up yet, and things haven’t been clarified. How can I go to Shanghai? If he dares to say another word, then it’s divorce. I don’t believe the Shangguan Family can’t survive without his money!"
Xiao Jing opened her mouth awkwardly; how was she supposed to convey this to Zhu Ye Feng...
"Why aren’t you going yet?" Shangguan Yiting clearly had lost her patience. "If you don’t go, I’ll go myself!"
"Yes, I will go right now." She lowered her head and hurriedly closed the curtain, letting out a sigh of relief. It was better to keep these words hidden for now; once Shangguan Yiting calmed down, she would find a more tactful way to inform Zhu Ye Feng.
A sleepless night passed.
Shangguan Yiting kept vigil by Cheng Mo Su's side all night and naturally felt exhausted. She rubbed her swollen eyes and pushed aside the curtain only to see Zhu Ye Feng standing before her in a perfectly tailored suit, smiling gently at her. She felt a pang in her heart and retorted irritably, "Didn’t I tell you to go back to Shanghai by yourself? What are you doing here? I won’t leave until these matters are clarified."
"The wedding was chaotic that day; it might take a long time to sort everything out. Our parents are waiting for us. As a daughter-in-law, you shouldn’t be so willful. Why not return with me?" Zhu Ye Feng remained calm and composed. The fact that their parents were waiting was one reason; more importantly, he didn’t want Shangguan Yiting to uncover any clues. Although he believed he had handled everything flawlessly, he knew well that there is no such thing as a perfect cover-up in this world, so it was better to be cautious. The longer things dragged on, the more advantageous it would be for him.
Shangguan Yiting narrowed her eyes and lightly touched his nose with her slender fingers. "Why are you in such a hurry? You don’t seem like someone who follows orders so easily; otherwise, you wouldn’t have waited until twenty-four to marry and ended up marrying someone like me who has been married before. You wouldn’t have anything to do with this matter, would you?"
Zhu Ye Feng chuckled softly but felt a jolt in his heart. However, he quickly regained his composure; Shangguan Yiting couldn’t possibly be that perceptive. In his view, she was just speaking casually, so he replied, "What nonsense are you talking about? Why would I harm my sister-in-law? Our families’ interests are tied together; I’m hoping for your well-being."
"That's the best way." Shangguan Yiting clearly did not truly doubt him, her dark pupils glancing elsewhere. "I really can't go back with you; there are still a few people coming to visit today."
"If you don't want to go back, then don't. I'll send a telegram to both families right now, saying we'll return later. I'll stay here with you and wait, how about that?"
Shangguan Yiting's eyes brightened, a warm feeling slowly flowing through her heart. "Are you serious?"
"Of course." Zhu Yefeng nodded. Staying by Shangguan Yiting's side would allow him to gather information more effectively and better control and change her thoughts; he certainly had reasons to stay.
"But..." he changed the subject, "who are you meeting today? Don't tell me it's some young punk; I won't agree to that!"
Shangguan Yiting was taken aback for a moment and couldn't help but smile. The black eyes on her fair face carried a mature charm and elegance. Zhu Yefeng avoided her gaze, but she smiled even more brightly. "Don't worry, today’s visitors are Mr. Xiao Zuowei, who is Mu Su's childhood friend, along with Miss Yeh from the Yeh family and Miss Jiang from the Jiang family."
"Oh?" Zhu Yefeng frowned slightly. "I know all of them. I heard that Mr. Xiao and Miss Yeh became war correspondents; they should be heading to the battlefield instead of coming to visit."
"They took a day off; after all, Mu Su's matters are also very important," Shangguan Yiting said, leaning against the railing, her gaze fixed on the gate of the Shangguan Family. Zhu Yefeng glanced at her; due to interests, her beauty was veiled in a thin layer of gauze. Now that he looked at her differently, her movements as she played with her hair and the grace in her expressions seemed like a perfect blend of fire and ice.
He slightly curled his lips; regardless of whether she was beautiful or how beautiful she was, she would ultimately remain just a passerby in his life.
Her slightly furrowed brow relaxed as she turned and went down the stairs. Zhu Yefeng quietly observed the two anxious individuals who pushed the door open. Xiao Zuowei was still as warm as jade in his memory, while Yeh Zhenzhen beside him resembled a blooming peach blossom, desperately showcasing its vibrant colors.
He scoffed softly and returned to his room.
"Miss Shangguan—oh no, Madam Zhu—how is Xiao Su doing now?" Xiao Zuowei asked urgently. Shangguan Yiting quickly led them to Cheng Mo Su's room, shaking her head helplessly. "Mu Su... I heard from Xiao Jing that the doctor said she won't wake up again."
Xiao Zuo was momentarily stunned. Yesterday, when he called to congratulate Shaoyi, he learned about Xiao Su's fainting incident. He initially thought it was just due to Xiao Su's poor health and considered that Shaoyi would be going to battle the next day, so he called Shangguan Yiting, hoping she would take care of her. This morning, when he came to visit, he heard many rumors along the way and grew increasingly anxious. He never expected that upon arriving and seeing it with his own eyes, he would still be in shock.
If possible, he wished he could go back to that night. He wouldn't let her follow Shaoyi; he wouldn't let them ignite the subsequent separation of life and death.
The silent air wrote down his worries and despair, confusion and unwillingness. He felt himself slowly sinking, descending into the depths of the sea, engulfed and attacked by darkness, swaying with a heart on the verge of destruction.
Suddenly, a warm hand grasped him. He tightened his pupils and looked at Yeh Zhenzhen, who was struggling to force a smile. "Brother Zuo Wei, this is not the time to be sad. Mo Su couldn't have taken that kind of medication by herself; she must have been harmed by someone. We need to find out who did this!"
He looked into her determined eyes and gradually pieced together his fragile heart, as if he had realized something. He smiled gently, his voice gaining strength. "You're right; it's clear that someone is manipulating this behind the scenes."
"Who could it be?" Shangguan Yiting joined the discussion.
"The biggest suspect is that Jiang Yating; she has always had ulterior motives towards Shaoyi." He calmed himself down and began to analyze slowly. "Also... I think the Zhu Family has a lot of suspicious elements!"
