Feng Yin gently pushed open the door, and the vibrant color of Jiang Yating's qipao momentarily stung her eyes. Regaining her composure, she lowered her gaze and said, "Miss."
"What Miss? I am now Consort Shangguan." Jiang Yating glanced at her sideways, slightly opening the window. The cold winter wind blew in a few snowflakes, and the biting chill spread throughout the room.
Feng Yin changed her words, saying, "Yes, Consort Shangguan."
Jiang Yating's expression shifted; her rosy lips curled into a delightful arc as she gently grasped Feng Yin's delicate wrist, a soft smile gracing her face. "Aunt Feng, you don't need to be so formal. Call me however you like; after all, you are my father's newly married concubine and also my elder."
Feng Yin calmly withdrew her gaze, pulling back her wrist that had been caught. Her brows furrowed slightly, and the corners of her lips were perfectly concealed, making it hard to discern her emotions. "Then if you have any instructions, please speak plainly. Madam Jiang does not allow me to linger here for too long."
"Alright." Jiang Yating nodded and leaned slightly closer to her. The sweet orange scent enveloped Feng Yin, catching her off guard. She lifted her chin slightly, a hint of pride in her gaze. "Do you remember who took you in when you were at your wit's end?"
"It was you, Miss." Feng Yin replied truthfully.
That day, Cheng Yi had confused Shangguan Shaoyi and Cheng Mo Su and gave her some money to seek another way out. However, having followed Cheng Mo Su since childhood and developed the demeanor of a young lady, she found no real options available. After going around in circles, she was deceived by a man.
That man was a gambler who squandered all his money. In desperation, she nearly fell into a life of disgrace but was fortunate that Jiang Yating recognized her worth. Not only did she bring her back to the Jiang family, but she also made her a concubine of Jiang Shaohao. She finally transformed from serving others to being served.
Afterward, she heard rumors that Cheng Mo Su had been searching for her. She was not favored in the Jiang family; Jiang Shaohao obeyed Madam Jiang's every word, leaving her with only the role of a bystander. Yet she still cared about appearances; no matter what, she was a concubine in the Jiang family while returning to Cheng Mo Su would mean becoming a maid again. After much internal conflict, she ultimately chose not to return.
However, she felt grateful and thought of Cheng Mo Su often. Upon learning of Cheng Mo Su's death and that Jiang Yating was to marry Shangguan Shaoyi, she felt an overwhelming reluctance but realized she had no power to change anything and could only let Jiang Yating dictate her fate.
Jiang Yating smiled gently as she leaned against the window sill; outside was an elegant landscape buried under heavy snow. The bad temper of Ning Tian City quietly seeped into her eyes with the departing warmth. She turned back with a smile, charming and clever.
"Mrs. Feng, you used to serve beside Miss Cheng, so you must be very clear about her preferences and how she likes her makeup," she said, raising her beautifully shaped eyebrows, her expression radiant.
Feng Yin could only nod, not quite understanding what she meant. She smiled proudly, reached out to open the wardrobe, and a variety of dresses and alluring Qipaos filled Feng Yin's vision. The vibrant colors made Feng Yin instinctively cover her lips to stifle her gasp of surprise.
Jiang Yating leisurely sat down, her fingertips tapping rhythmically on the cherry wood table, a gentle smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Based on Miss Cheng's taste, which one of these dresses do you think she would choose?"
Feng Yin was somewhat puzzled but still looked seriously, pulling out a Qipao. However, Jiang Yating frowned slightly. She didn't particularly like this Qipao, but the exquisite embroidery was top-notch, which was why it remained in the wardrobe.
With some hesitation, she picked up the moon-white high-neck Qipao adorned with lotus embroidery. A sense of doubt crossed her mind until she recalled that Cheng Mo Su indeed favored such simple colors.
"Mrs. Feng, I really like this Qipao too. Why don't you take a look at what other clothes in my wardrobe you like? You can take them all; I won't mind at all," she said with an enchanting smile. Feng Yin widened her eyes in disbelief as Jiang Yating's smile grew even brighter. "But you have to help me with something. I want to style my hair up, but I'm not very good at it. Can you help me?"
Feng Yin had always loved beautiful clothing since she was young, but due to her status, she could only watch as the young lady wore them. Even now that she had married into the Jiang family, Mrs. Jiang was frugal and would never make her any new clothes. But now that Jiang Yating was allowing her to choose freely, she couldn't contain her joy and asked, "What style does the young lady want?"
"It doesn't need to be anything special; just the style you used to do for Miss Cheng."
Feng Yin smiled quickly; having helped the young lady with her hair since childhood made it second nature for her. In less than a minute, she had styled Jiang Yating's hair into an elegant bun and said, "This is the hairstyle my young lady used to love most; take a look." She casually picked up a hairpin from the corner of the table and adorned it in Jiang Yating's dark hair.
Jiang Yating looked at herself in the mirror; her flowing hair was gently gathered up, revealing bright eyes and white teeth, with red lips that carried a hint of innocence—she truly looked somewhat different from herself.
She gazed into the mirror and tried to mimic Cheng Mo Su's slight smile. The small curve was difficult to replicate and lacked Cheng Mo Su's charm, which made her feel a bit frustrated as she exclaimed, "In your opinion, with the same styling, who looks better—Miss Cheng or me? I want to hear the truth!"
Feng Yin paused for a moment before finally saying, "The truth is... well, each has its own merits; both look beautiful."
She let out a cold snort, her bright eyes drifting over to Feng Yin, then fixing on the colorful luxurious garments behind her. "Consort Feng, there's no point in lying. If you don't want these clothes, I can wear them myself."
"Yes..." Feng Yin closed her eyes and said, "If we're talking about this outfit, naturally my lady looks better."
"Go on!"
"Yes..." Feng Yin hesitated and said, "My lady doesn't have the same heavy sense of ambition as Miss Jiang. She is as calm as water, so she suits these plain-colored garments very well. As for Miss Jiang, living in a world full of colors every day, she probably doesn't have the same mindset as my lady, so..."
Jiang Yating snorted, "You do make some valid points." She secretly thought to herself that she wouldn't be able to replicate Cheng Mosu's charm anytime soon, but the way Cheng Mosu walked like a delicate willow in the wind and smiled with a subtly upturned mouth was something she could definitely imitate.
"Alright, feel free to pick whatever you like from this wardrobe." Jiang Yating waved her hand and added, "Do you have the things my mom asked you to bring for me?"
"Yes, of course." Feng Yin quickly extended her hand to present them.
Jiang Yating smiled as she accepted the package. With this medicine in hand and having imitated Cheng Mosu's appearance, she and Shangguan Shaoyi would ultimately become a well-known couple.
