However, he ultimately did not continue, slowly releasing her and watching her sit down in the pure white softness, his gaze softening, yet the smile at the corners of his lips remained cold. "Cheng Mosu, I'm not in a hurry. I have a lifetime to spend with you. I want to see if your heart really can't be swayed."
She calmed her expression and stopped speaking. He reached for a black trench coat and draped it over her shoulders, highlighting her snow-white skin and bright eyes. She gently removed the hairpin that held her long hair, allowing the flowing strands to cascade down to her waist. Closing her water-colored eyes, she lay back in the pure white space to rest.
During the few days on the train, he had not spoken to her at all, and she was glad for the peace. With nothing else to do, she flipped through a diary, her heart swirling with various unspoken feelings. He cleaned his pistol, the deep light contained within his narrow eyes. She lightly brushed past his handsome face, unsure of what he was thinking.
The train stopped in Linxia City, the capital of the northwest. The noticeably sparse crowd spoke in accents she could hardly understand as they greeted each other and embraced. She followed him off the train, intending to leave on her own, but he captured her firmly. She looked up at him; he remained silent, tightly gripping her as if afraid she would run away.
She lowered her beautifully shaped brows; a plain qipao blended into the icy surroundings. He pulled her slightly closer, the rich fragrance wafting through the air as he breathed. He looked down at the white tea hairpin nestled among her dark hair and couldn't help but smile softly, leaving her puzzled.
He slowly spoke, marking his first words to her in many days: "Stay by my side and don't think about running away. I've issued a warrant for your capture; anyone who finds you in the northwest provinces will be rewarded with five thousand dollars."
"You!" Her water-colored eyes glimmered with anger as she stared directly at him, but he appeared indifferent, a faint smile lingering at the corners of his lips. "So you can only stay in my residence; otherwise, no one can guarantee your safety."
"What’s the point of imprisoning me like this?" A sudden flash of anger added a touch of humanity to her otherwise ethereal demeanor.
This only pleased him further; his mood brightened as he said, "Exactly! I want to imprison you like this. Call me shameless or cruel; I just want to keep you by my side. Once we register our marriage and become a real couple, I will cancel this order."
She relaxed her brows and focused intently. Initially, she thought that as long as she stayed out of Northeast China and Shanghai, it would be fine to come to the northwest where she had an acquaintance in Ruan Yu for mutual support. Little did she expect that Ruan Yu would come up with such a scheme, truly wanting her to be his wife.
Before she could devise a countermeasure, he pulled her into a military vehicle waiting for them.
The Ruan Family Mansion was grand and imposing; however, apart from servants, it was just the two of them living in such a vast house, making it feel particularly empty. In the living room stood a pure white grand piano that caught her attention because it was draped with a pink satin cloth—definitely not something belonging to Ruan Yu.
In response to her probing gaze, he couldn't help but smile. "This is a gift I bought for my former woman. She no longer lives here. If you like it, keep it; if not, just throw it away."
A faint smile lingered on her lips as she slowly sat down on the piano bench. With deft hands, her delicate fingertips suddenly possessed an intangible power, causing the dusty piano to overflow with enchanting melodies. Ruan Yu was taken aback; he knew Cheng Mosu was skilled at painting and did it exceptionally well, but he hadn't expected her to play the piano so brilliantly. He gently lifted the corners of his lips, his narrow eyes reflecting admiration. It seemed his life would not be boring.
As the piece concluded, he clapped his hands and laughed, "I didn't expect you to be such an exceptional pianist, Madam."
Her face flushed slightly as she replied, "I just played casually, and I'm not your Madam. I've never thought about marrying you."
"Is that so?" Ruan Yu squinted his narrow eyes and chuckled. "Since you don't want to marry me, then you can live here without any title. After all, there have been many nameless women who have lived here."
She furrowed her delicate brows, a hint of anger brewing between them. "I'm not one of your beauties or confidantes. You will eventually go to the battlefield one day, and by then, I will be gone, and you certainly won't be able to catch me."
"Don't worry." He looked at her for a while before snorting with pride. "On that day, I will definitely take you to the battlefield with me as a military wife. Haven't you heard of that title?"
She raised her anger-filled watery eyes, the light from the crystal chandelier casting a glow on her fair countenance, making her rose-colored lips particularly alluring. He leaned down towards her, but she slowly pushed him away as if she anticipated his move. He paused for a moment, merely watching as the pure white light scattered in her clear gaze before slightly withdrawing.
Since she was unwilling, he no longer pressed the issue. Clapping his hands, several pretty maids rushed over from various directions. He pointed at Cheng Mosu and said, "This is your Madam; from now on, she is the mistress of this house. You must obey her orders in everything and also keep an eye on her for me. My Madam likes to wander around but unfortunately doesn't know the way back; once she leaves the estate, she won't find her way back. So if you let her escape from the estate, be careful with your necks."
"Yes," several maids nodded in agreement.
Cheng Mosu paused for a moment; he claimed it was to take care of her but was essentially monitoring her. Unable to suppress his frown, he said, "Ruan Yu, how long do you plan to keep me confined? You..."
"I can keep you confined for as long as I want. The whole world knows what you look like; everyone knows you're mine, Ruan Yu's person. Although you can't escape my grasp anymore, I still need to take good care of you." He smiled nonchalantly and stepped up the stairs. The maids understood completely and came over to guide Cheng Mosu to her room.
"Madam, if there is anything about this house that you are not satisfied with, please let me know, and I will find someone to make changes."
She looked around the room; the house was too luxurious, everything adorned with a tacky gold. She couldn't help but curl her lips in disdain, which did not escape the notice of the maid beside her, who quickly said, "Is Madam not fond of this color? I will find someone to change it tomorrow."
She paused for a moment, assessing the delicate-looking maid and thought to herself that this girl truly had a refined quality. Moreover, she had heard earlier that Ruan Yu was charming and dashing, and even the maids serving him in the residence had to be carefully selected. It seemed that this was indeed the case. She smiled lightly and asked, "What is your name?"
"My name is Jiexiang." The maid responded without any pretense, speaking politely and graciously, which earned her quite a bit of favor.
"Jiexiang... a lovely name." A faint smile appeared on her lips. "Jiexiang is a flower name, also known as Dream Flower. It is said that if one dreams at night and then walks under the Jiexiang tree in the morning, their good dreams can come true while nightmares can be dispelled."
"Madam is quite knowledgeable." Jiexiang smiled gently. "This name was given to me by Young Master."
Ruan Yu named her? She slightly turned her gaze, looking out the window. She hadn't expected Ruan Yu to possess such refined taste; perhaps he truly had many admirable qualities that she had yet to discover.
