Cheng Mosu watched as Xiao Zhou's figure gradually faded away, and only then did she slowly retract her gaze. Her eyes were slightly red, but the water-colored hue remained, filled with clarity and calmness. She turned to knock on the door, but unexpectedly, Cheng Yi pulled aside the curtain. She was momentarily taken aback and smiled gently.
Cheng Yi was naturally overjoyed to see his daughter again and quickly stepped aside to let her in. She sat down slowly and noticed a half-cold cup of tea on the table. Smiling, she said, "Dad, let me change this tea and brew you a fresh cup."
"No need to go through all that trouble," Cheng Yi replied with a smile. He had recently heard about the changes in the Northwest; it was said that Ruan Yu's brother, Ruan Ke, had gathered an army from the southwest to reclaim power in the Northwest. It made sense; after all, Ruan Yu had committed such ruthless acts in the past, and now it could be said that those who do evil will ultimately meet their demise.
However, he couldn't help but worry after hearing Mosu's conversation with Xiao Zhou at the door. Mosu's words, "If he is still here after this calamity, and I am still here, then I will return and we will no longer be apart," made him uneasy. He looked at his daughter and saw her lightly smiling eyes misting over, which made his heart race.
Without thinking deeply, he said, "Mosu, you have been trapped by Ruan Yu for so long; now that you can finally escape his clutches, why would you want to go back?"
She was taken aback for a moment, her water-colored eyes rippling slightly. Looking out the window as tender shoots slowly emerged and desolation faded away, she pursed her lips and said, "People always need a bit of hope, don't they? According to Ruan Yu's character, he never thinks of others. If it were a war with uncertain life and death outcomes, he would definitely keep me by his side. But now that he has let me go and bid me farewell, he probably has resigned himself to death. What I mean by this is just to give him a thought of survival. By then, if he truly wants me back, he won't be able to find me."
So that's how it is. Cheng Yi breathed a sigh of relief; fortunately, his daughter had not fallen in love with Ruan Yu. Otherwise, she would have been caught up in one vortex after another. He looked at her long eyelashes framing those water-colored eyes and said, "Mosu, since you have no attachment to Ruan Yu anymore, let's go abroad together and stay away from these disputes forever."
"Okay." She answered with just that one word as the deep blue night sky surrounded her. The cascading silver glow made her appear elegant and serene. Listening to the quiet chirping of insects in the tranquil night, she couldn't help but smile lightly; what right did she have to linger over any crowd?
Cheng Yi saw through her thoughts and could only sigh at fate's cruelty; she and Shaoyi were meant to be together but were torn apart by these conflicting interests and exiled. He heard her soft voice embracing the air: "These five years felt as long as a lifetime."
She was no longer that reckless girl or that childish child. She gently wrapped her arms around her knees, burying her emotions within herself. Time had passed; things had changed.
That night, she hardly rested. After drinking tea, she fell asleep and awoke at dawn. She changed into a plain-colored qipao that perfectly covered her fair neck. The daisies on the qipao shimmered subtly, giving her an air of elegance and nobility. Her rose-colored lips lifted slightly as she gathered her hair into a bun adorned with hairpins and smiled softly.
The two boarded the train around noon. Cheng Mosu requested a newspaper and read it carefully. Unknowingly feeling hungry, she headed to the dining car to grab something to eat while listening to several people discussing nearby.
"Have you heard? Almost all the Soldiers in the Northwest have defected. The battle hasn't even started, and Ruan Yu has already lost."
"Is that true? Well, thinking about it, it's understandable. Who would follow someone as tyrannical as Ruan Yu? Give those Soldiers a chance, and they will rebel."
"That's right. However, recently Ruan Yu signed a treaty with General Jiang, originally intended to resist the Japanese Army in the Northeast and North China. Now if Ruan Ke takes over, I wonder if it will still be valid."
"I actually hope Ruan Yu can continue to manage the Northwest. It's already so chaotic; it took a lot for everyone to resist foreign humiliation. What if Ruan Ke is worse than Ruan Yu?"
She couldn't help but tremble her delicate fingers holding the bone china teacup. The scalding tea leaves splashed onto her tender skin, and she lightly bit her red lips, taking out a handkerchief embroidered with the Plum Blossom Pattern to gently wipe it. Cheng Yi happened to come over at that moment and overheard the discussion. His gaze fell on his daughter's downcast eyes, and he couldn't help but sigh as he sat down across from her.
It was then she realized her father's arrival. She looked up to see his calm expression and was momentarily taken aback. "Dad, what's wrong?"
"Nothing much. I just think that although Ruan Yu is a bit violent, he can still distinguish right from wrong. Now that the situation is so chaotic, Ruan Ke is coming back to seize power; it seems a bit ungrateful." It was rare for him to speak positively about Ruan Yu, which made Cheng Mosu unable to suppress a smile.
Time on the Train passed quickly. As the whistle changed from long to slow and the clattering of the tracks came to a stop, the lingering white mist disappeared. They finally exchanged smiles, feeling sentimental. Cheng Mosu held a leather suitcase with embossed patterns, her brows slightly relaxing, and a hint of a smile hidden at the corners of her lips.
Finally back home!
She quietly walked out of the Station with her father. The unique spring breeze of Jiangnan brushed against her cheek, making her smile lightly. In her gaze, amidst the flourishing greenery was a touch of crimson; colorful butterflies chased each other while whispers filled Wuyi Alley, and vehicles flowed endlessly on the streets.
She linked arms with her father, looking around at the long-missed scenery when she heard him cough twice and turned to look in the direction he indicated.
Xiao Zuowei stood beside a black limousine, tall and slender, his dark gray suit perfectly tailored to outline his jade-like demeanor between his brows and eyes. He smiled gently, mingling with the warm spring breeze, warming her like in the past; however, the weariness concealed in his gaze slowly stirred unease within her.
“Xiao Su.” He called her softly, and she smiled lightly at him. It felt like a reunion from another lifetime; the childhood sweethearts had changed. The time they spent together was passionate and beautiful, but now their silent exchange was filled with an unspoken loneliness that was hard to look back on.
She called out, “Brother Zuwei, it’s been a long time.”
“Hmm.” He smiled but did not look at her anymore; instead, his gaze focused on Cheng Yi. “Uncle Cheng, this time I’m not just here to pick you up; I also have something important regarding the Jiang and Zhu families to tell you.”
