Liu Shijiu loved reading and was knowledgeable in many fields, especially well-versed in poetry. He once said, "Reading extensively can enrich one's mind and broaden one's horizons..." Therefore, he held great admiration for Bai Juyi's poetic achievements.
Two days later, the snow finally stopped. Bai Juyi looked out the window; the sunlight shone on the snow-covered ground, reflecting a dazzling white light. "What a beautiful day it is; it would be wonderful to invite Liu Shijiu for a drink," Bai Juyi thought to himself. Recently, he had brewed a batch of rice wine using snowmelt from winter, which had a sweet and refreshing taste.
Bai Juyi walked into the courtyard and opened the lid of the wine jar. A layer of green foam floated on the surface of the wine, resembling countless green ants dancing atop it. "I've got an idea!" Bai Juyi suddenly had a thought. He returned indoors and picked up his brush to write a few lines of poetry: "Green Ant New Brew Wine, Red Clay Small Stove. Late Evening, Snow is Expected, Can you drink a cup?" (Ask Liu Shijiu).
"That's it! I'll write a poem to ask him," Bai Juyi smiled as he folded the poem and placed it in an envelope, calling for a young boy: "Take this letter to Liu Shijiu's residence." The boy complied and left.
Bai Juyi watched the boy's figure disappear, a smile appearing on his lips: "Liu Shijiu will surely come after seeing this poem." As evening approached, the sky gradually darkened, and snowflakes began to fall again. Smoke rose from Bai Juyi's small courtyard as the stove was lit.
"Knock, knock, knock!" There came a knock at the door. Bai Juyi hurriedly opened it to find Liu Shijiu standing outside, covered in snowflakes.
"Brother Yuan Bai!" Liu Shijiu laughed heartily as he stepped inside. "Come in quickly; it's snowing heavily outside." Bai Juyi pulled Liu Shijiu into the house. Inside, the fire was crackling warmly. Bai Juyi brushed off the snowflakes from Liu Shijiu's clothes, and they sat facing each other.
Bai Juyi took out a jar of rice wine and poured a cup for Liu Shijiu.
"This is my newly brewed rice wine, give it a try," Bai Juyi said with a smile.
Liu Shijiu raised the cup, took a small sip, and savored it carefully.
"This is excellent wine!" Liu Shijiu exclaimed, "It has a fragrant aroma, sweet and refreshing—truly great wine!"
Seeing that Liu Shijiu enjoyed it, Bai Juyi felt very pleased. He lifted his cup and clinked it with Liu Shijiu's.
"Cheers to our deep friendship!" Bai Juyi said with a smile.
"Cheers!" Liu Shijiu laughed heartily in response.
After receiving Bai Juyi's poem, Liu Shijiu felt deeply moved.
He did not expect that on such a cold night, Bai Juyi would invite him to drink.
The words in the poem were filled with sincere emotions, making it impossible for Liu Shijiu to refuse.
He immediately decided that he must go to Bai Juyi's courtyard to share a drink with him.
Braving the wind and snow, Liu Shijiu stumbled into Bai Juyi's courtyard.
Inside, the red clay stove emitted warm heat, filling the entire room with a rosy glow.
Bai Juyi sat by the stove, gazing at the flames with a smile on his face.
"Brother Yuan Bai, I have arrived!" Liu Shijiu pushed the door open and walked in, covered in snow.
"Liu Shijiu! You really came!" Bai Juyi exclaimed in surprise as he stood up, pulling Liu Shijiu to sit down. "Quickly sit by the fire; you're all wet."
Liu Shijiu took off his outer coat and hung it on a wooden rack to dry.
The two sat facing each other, the fire casting a rosy glow on their faces.
"I can't believe you actually came," Bai Juyi remarked with emotion. "I thought you wouldn't venture out in this weather."
"How could I not?" Liu Shijiu replied with a smile. "You invited me so sincerely; how could I refuse?"
"I'm really glad you could come," Bai Juyi poured Liu Shijiu another cup of wine. "Have a drink to warm yourself up."
Liu Shijiu took the cup and had a sip. The wine was sweet and refreshing, prompting him to exclaim, "This is excellent wine!"
The two of them were drinking and discussing poetry and literature, creating a very harmonious atmosphere.
Outside, the wind and snow were growing stronger, but the two remained unaffected, still enjoying their conversation.
After several rounds of drinks, Bai Juyi stood up and said, "Liu Shijiu, how do you like my newly brewed wine?"
"Very good!" Liu Shijiu exclaimed, "This wine has a fragrant aroma that I've never tasted before."
"This wine is brewed with snowmelt from winter," Bai Juyi explained. "Snowmelt is sweet and perfect for brewing."
"I see," Liu Shijiu nodded. "That's why it has such a refreshing taste."
The two continued to drink and chat, unknowingly reaching deep into the night.
The wind and snow outside had stopped, and the moon peeked out from behind the clouds, illuminating the snowy ground with a shimmering glow.
"It's getting late," Liu Shijiu said as he stood up. "I should head back."
