The next day, after some arrangements, I completed the discharge procedures. It had been a full four months, and my abdomen was slightly swollen; the changes in my body were palpable.
My aunt stood by, busily helping me pack my belongings. She looked at me with concern and gently asked, "How about you stay at my place for a few days? Your father has been taking care of you all this time, and his work has been delayed because of it. I'm relatively free lately and can keep you company at home. Once your father has prepared more of his work, you can return home. What do you think?"
I pondered for a moment, realizing how much my father had sacrificed to take care of me, and that he needed sufficient time and energy for his work. So, I nodded in agreement with my aunt's suggestion. During the nearly month-long hospital stay, my father had almost been by my bedside day and night, leaving him no time to focus on his writing. Now that I was finally discharged, I should give him some time to handle his own affairs.
With my aunt accompanying me, I walked out of the hospital. I thought that after being discharged, I would soon see Shen Yulin. However, as days turned into weeks, I had been at my aunt's house for a whole month without catching sight of him.
Every time I looked out the window, hoping he would suddenly appear, all I received in return was endless disappointment. Several times, I nearly couldn't suppress the urge to ask my aunt about Shen Yulin but felt it inappropriate to do so, so I swallowed my questions back down. However, as time passed, my unease grew stronger, surging within me like a tide.
I began to overthink and speculate about various possible reasons. Did something happen to him? Had he forgotten about me? Or was there some other unspoken difficulty? Did he not want children? These questions swirled in my mind, making me increasingly anxious and restless. I tried to distract myself by reading books or listening to music, but whenever things quieted down, those worries would inevitably resurface.
Finally unable to hold back any longer on the day of my five-month pregnancy check-up, after returning home from the appointment, I grabbed my aunt who was about to instruct the nanny on adjusting her diet. My aunt looked at me with confusion and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Aunt... I..." Just as I was about to speak up, Shen Yulin came down the stairs from the second floor. I stood there in a daze as an indescribable feeling surged within me. Slowly lowering the hand that had grabbed my aunt's arm, I instinctively touched my belly; a complex emotion flashed in my eyes. My lips parted slightly as if wanting to say something but ultimately swallowed it back down.
Shen Yulin stood quietly at the foot of the stairs, hesitant to approach me. He felt conflicted inside, unsure if this meeting would make me feel resistant and worried that my emotional state might affect our unborn child. Yet his gaze still held deep affection; the girl before him radiated a maternal glow that was different from before—gentle and serene. He longed to step forward and embrace this beauty tightly but felt a flicker of fear when he saw that I remained still.
With a soft sigh, my aunt walked into the kitchen while I remained frozen in place. After a moment of hesitation, I gently pressed my lips together and slowly turned towards the small courtyard outside. At that moment, I felt incredibly tense; my fists clenched involuntarily. Standing quietly beside the grape trellis, I looked up at the sparse remaining grapes hanging above. An impulse surged within me to pick one and taste it. So, I reached out to grab a grape but overlooked its height; just as I strained to tiptoe, a warm hand wrapped around my waist. This hand easily plucked the glistening grape from above.
A familiar scent filled my senses; feeling flustered, I tried to push him away. "Don't move; be careful not to fall." Shen Yulin lifted me effortlessly out from under the grape trellis. "Put me down; I can walk myself." Given my pregnancy condition, I dared not make any sudden movements and only gently twisted my body.
Shen Yulin set me down on a stone bench and brought the grape close to my mouth while softly saying, "Little greedy cat, here." I took the grape but didn't eat it right away; instead, I held it in my hand and played with it.
