"You see, this mermaid has woken up."
In the empty corridor, the light was dim, with only the incandescent bulb above flickering occasionally. This faint visibility made it difficult to see the mermaid inside the transparent glass tank.
The new female research assistant held a clipboard, straining her eyes to discern and carefully record the mermaid's morphological features.
Mermaid Age: Adult
Mermaid Tail Length: Initial estimate of nearly four meters.
Mermaid Species: Unknown.
The species was completely different from any mermaids she had seen in the lab before, and she couldn't recall any related species types in her mind.
For a moment, the assistant felt a bit lost. Habitually finishing her notes with "unknown," she then asked, "Where did you find this mermaid?"
He Shuo pushed a cart forward slowly, walking beside the female assistant, and replied softly, "We discovered this near the eastern waters of the Pacific Ocean; it's an adult male mermaid."
The assistant squinted at He Shuo. They had already captured most of the mermaid species around the East China Sea, but they had never encountered such a large male adult mermaid. It was clear that this mermaid was not a resident of the East China Sea.
Noticing her intense gaze, He Shuo remained calm and continued, "This mermaid is still alive; it could be worth ten million dollars. When are you planning to make the payment?"
Upon hearing this, the assistant withdrew her gaze and looked at the mermaid's tail hanging over the edge of the tank. She nodded, "Take it to the corner ahead; you can leave after that. Someone will come to get you for the money."
During their conversation, the mermaid had already awakened but made no attempt to resist; instead, it quietly nestled in the tank, completely still.
At this moment, the effects of the anesthetic had not worn off; while its mind was awake, its body remained paralyzed.
Soon they reached the corner where ten burly men dressed in black appeared. They first administered another dose of strong anesthetic to the mermaid before taking it from He Shuo and pushing it away.
Ansheng did not have time to take in all that was happening here, but even catching a glimpse was enough.
Dazed and confused, he was brought by a group of people to a large water tank that was only about ten cubic meters in size.
"Bang."
At the moment he entered the water, Ansheng instantly opened his amber eyes.
The surface of the mermaid's skin seemed to shimmer with faint blue stars that flickered in and out of sight. The gills behind her ears and neck slightly opened, beginning to exchange with the liquid in the water. Soon, the anesthetic in her body was expelled into the water and filtered out.
Ansheng showed no signs of dissatisfaction; she gently swam around in the water, starting to survey the structure of the entire laboratory.
The laboratory was not particularly large but felt spacious due to its sparse arrangement. Aside from the large tank for the mermaid, there was only a storage freezer and a table left in the entire lab.
Through the glass, Ansheng could clearly see several bottles and jars placed prominently in the storage cabinet. These were experimental agents used to test various functions and vital signs of mermaids, though she did not know that they would soon be used on her.
The mermaid merely glanced at them before shifting her gaze away.
There were very few items on the table—only a pen holder and a report folder. As her gaze swept across the wall, Ansheng's attention suddenly halted.
As if she had seen something incredible, she pressed both hands forcefully against the glass, staring intently at a photograph hanging on the wall featuring two people.
Her light-colored eyes suddenly became profoundly deep, her pupils gradually narrowing into slits. The webbing between her hands began to tense up, and her tail curved into a fierce posture as if ready to attack.
The photograph depicted a woman and a man together. The woman had a stunning mixed-race face, with flowing wavy hair smiling at the camera, looking radiant and bright.
The man had slightly long hair tied into a small braid hanging over his right shoulder. He appeared coolly handsome, wearing a white lab coat while standing beside the woman, glancing at her with an expression that was both helpless and indulgent.
The two figures in the picture were closely positioned together, suggesting an extremely close relationship.
Ansheng's face, perfectly sculpted like Venus, began to twist into a grotesque expression. She frantically pounded on the glass until cracks appeared, triggering an ear-piercing alarm throughout the Laboratory Module. It was only when she saw the group of security personnel that she finally stopped.
"What’s going on? How could there be cracks in the glass?"
Ansheng's eyes were fixed solely on Jenny, not for any other reason but because she was the protagonist in the photograph.
Hearing the alarm sound in her area of responsibility, Jenny immediately put down her work and hurried over from another Laboratory Module.
This experimental chamber was still within the designated division of the branch; only after the preliminary experimental data from the first week was obtained would these test subjects be sent to the research institute best suited for studying them.
According to past Rating standards, adult mermaids would be labeled as Class A, while minors would receive a Class B label. Only those with particularly aggressive behavior would be classified as S Class.
However, regardless of the level, there had never been an extreme situation where bulletproof glass was shattered.
Looking at the obvious cracks appearing on the glass tank, Jenny felt a shock, but she quickly regained her composure and calmly directed the security personnel to execute an emergency transfer for the mermaid.
The surrounding security personnel drew their tranquilizer guns from behind and held them tightly, aiming at the fiberglass in front of them, ready to take another shot at the mermaid at the right moment.
The situation was critical; Ansheng continued to pound and crash against the bulletproof glass. With each loud bang, the cracks grew larger, and her vertical pupils seemed to narrow into a dangerous line, exuding an unmistakable aura of terror.
The mermaid's gaze seemed to have been fixed on her since she entered, and that hostility felt as if it could swallow her whole, sending chills down her spine.
Why was this happening?
How could a mermaid she had never met harbor such intense animosity towards her? Although Jenny was filled with confusion, now was not the time to ponder these questions.
"Give me one," Jenny said as she took a tranquilizer gun from a nearby security personnel.
Everyone was tense; the atmosphere had reached a boiling point. The mermaid was about to break free from the tank. If they couldn't hit this mermaid quickly, it would surely be their demise.
With a tearing sound, the force of the water quickly pushed those nearby away as the mermaid burst out of the tank.
Perhaps due to resistance on land, her movements were not as fluid as they were in water.
This gave the group a glimmer of hope, as the bullets they fired now had a chance to hit the mermaid.
However, things did not go as smoothly as they had anticipated. The tranquilizer gun was loaded with only six tranquilizer darts.
The mermaid, with her nearly four-meter-long tail, glided through the Laboratory Module like a ghost, skillfully dodging each bullet.
"What should we do? We're running out of bullets!" one of the security personnel beside Jenny shouted in panic.
Everyone was on edge, their nerves stretched to the limit. Their bullets were dwindling, yet none had managed to hit the mermaid.
As the mermaid charged towards Jenny, the security personnel quickly shielded her behind him. But the mermaid's sleek tail swept through, and in an instant, all the security personnel standing in front of Jenny fell to the ground.
The long tail not only swept through but also collided with other objects. A framed photo hanging on the wall shattered as the mermaid's tail brushed against it, slicing the picture in half with its sharp tip.
The torn photo quietly floated down onto the water's surface. Without a second thought, the mermaid turned and swished her tail, reaching out to grab the broken picture.
Jenny was already drenched in cold sweat, but she quickly composed herself, biting her lip as she aimed at the vulnerable back of the mermaid and decisively pulled the trigger.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Jenny fired three shots in quick succession.
