The rain poured down in torrents, pounding relentlessly against the hull of the ship. The drainage system had long since been overwhelmed and was unable to cope with such a rapid downpour.
In an instant, the water had risen to the level of everyone's calves, and the icy rain sent chills through each person.
"Professor Xu, it's too dark, and the compass is malfunctioning. It's hard to find our direction now," Yang Luo said, frantically operating the instruments in the control room, his expression so grim it seemed like water could drip from it.
Xu Qingyuan had not left; he remained steadfast in this confined space.
Each of them wore life jackets emblazoned with the Dove of Peace Badge, and they carried survival packs on their backs, prepared for the worst.
Xu Qingyuan opened his optical brain, attempting to send a distress signal, but none went through.
After having Yang Luo follow the old map they had found online, they had only advanced a few kilometers when the rain came pouring down like a burst dam, nearly obscuring everyone's vision.
Xu Qingyuan's distress signal vanished into thin air, and so did everyone else's.
With no other choice, they tied themselves to the ship. As it rocked violently, some felt their stomachs churning and were on the verge of vomiting.
The strands of hair on Xu Qingyuan's forehead were ruthlessly soaked by the rain, sticking messily to his face. His tone was urgent yet resolute: "Continue in the last direction we saw. Now we have to take a gamble."
Yang Luo was tightly bound to his chair; the joystick beneath him was sturdy enough that despite his vigorous movements, it showed no signs of breaking.
"Alright, Professor Xu."
In today's world, where technology is highly advanced and weather can be accurately predicted, such harsh weather conditions are rarely ventured into.
Yet for some reason, they had reached this point, still unaware of whether life or death awaited them ahead.
"Yang Luo, you must remember the route; we are relying on you now."
"Wait, you were also on a mission at sea before. How could you not remember this route?"
"I never came to this godforsaken place before. This area is known for frequent thunderstorms, and with that Demon Island nearby, this route has almost been abandoned for over a decade."
"So you’ve never been here either?"
"Who in their right mind would come here!"
Watching the few people next to him engaging in a back-and-forth conversation while tying themselves to the iron pole, Xu Qingyuan's expression fluctuated between worry and anxiety.
He Shuo nudged Xu Qingyuan with his arm. "Hey, Boss Xu, didn't we forget someone?"
Xu Qingyuan looked up and met He Shuo's dark gaze. "Forgot who?"
His eyes quickly scanned the surroundings. For this mission, aside from the eight members sent by the Komor Institute and six sailors, there were only fifteen people in total, including He Shuo.
There are currently ten people in the control room, and the other five have been ordered by him to manage the canvas viewing positions on both sides outside. He had already counted the numbers; who could be missing?
Xu Qingyuan looked at He Shuo with suspicion.
He Shuo, with a forced smile, reminded him, "Boss Xu, have you and I forgotten about that mermaid?"
Xu Qingyuan's pupils suddenly dilated, and his heart skipped a beat. How could he have forgotten about this biggest variable?
Xu Qingyuan quickly organized his thoughts and arranged matters, saying, "Yang Luo, He Shuo, you two stay in the control room and continue navigating to Demon Island. When the other five return, don’t go out again; just head directly to the island."
Yang Luo turned back and asked, "What about you, Professor Xu?"
Without hesitation, Xu Qingyuan replied, "Don't worry about me. I'll check other areas. You two try to find the correct route as soon as possible."
As Xu Qingyuan stepped out of the control room door, rain poured down on him like a waterfall, instantly soaking him to the bone and clinging his clothes tightly to his body.
He groped along the structure beside him, gripping the railing tightly as he made his way forward with great difficulty toward the Laboratory Module below deck.
The ship rocked violently as if it were trying to throw him overboard.
