My hand froze in mid-air for a moment, and after a while, I finally remembered to ask him, "What are you doing?"
He didn't bother to answer me and had already opened the door to walk outside. After exiting the entrance, he said with annoyance, "Hurry up."
What was supposed to be a nice walk turned into a forced abduction, with one person walking ahead and the other weakly trailing behind, occasionally turning back to glare at me and throw out some sharp remarks.
I felt that Xiao Minxing must be bored. I even thought about going to his company the next day to see if it was on the verge of closing down. Why had this boss suddenly changed like this, keeping an eye on me for a walk in the middle of the night?
However, he seemed to be in good spirits, almost humming a little tune.
The two of us walked around the yard. The autumn wind was slightly cool, and the air was damp with a hint of briny taste.
In the distance, a crescent moon hung in the sky, slanted and bright against the backdrop of no stars. The surroundings were dimly lit, every corner tranquil and serene.
Xiao Minxing walked slowly ahead of me. His tall figure sometimes cast a shadow over me due to the light, while at other times it stretched into a long silhouette that bent towards the greenery by the roadside.
He was wearing pajamas with a long coat over them. His hair was tousled, with a few strands playfully sticking up, making him look somewhat cute.
As I watched him and followed his pace, all past grievances flew out of my mind at that moment. I felt an unexpected longing for a future together, hand in hand as we grew old.
Perhaps we could have one or two children; ideally, one boy and one girl.
What should we name them? That should be his decision; he is knowledgeable and smart and would surely come up with beautiful and meaningful names for our little ones.
I had almost imagined what clothes our children would wear when they went to school and who would help them with their homework when suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my forehead as I was knocked backward.
A strong arm caught me just in time. As I regained my balance, I noticed Xiao Minxing's strange expression.
His eyes appeared even deeper in the night, burning yet serene, like a sleeping volcano—bottomless yet distinctly radiating that intense energy.
"What are you thinking?" His voice was a bit hoarse, but in such a night and environment, it sounded incredibly captivating.
My heart trembled slightly at his gaze and words, and my face involuntarily flushed.
My arm was still clasped in his hand, our bodies close together. I could hear his breathing and feel the warm air flowing from him to me, disrupting my nerves and muddling my thoughts. I couldn't respond to what he said, nor did I dare to meet his gaze directly; I looked down at my toes instead.
Suddenly, his hand tightened, pressing me deeper into his embrace, and then he quickly lowered his head to seek my lips.
His lips were soft, carrying a hint of coolness from the night as they pressed down on mine, turning, intertwining, exploring.
I felt myself melting; from the initial stiffness and panic, I transformed into a puddle of water, entwined with him.
When Xiao Minxing lifted his head, I was still lost in the kiss we just shared, my gaze unfocused as I stared at him dreamily.
He wore a light smile at the corner of his mouth and tightened his grip on my wrist as he said, "It's late and the dew is heavy; we should go back inside."
My mind jolted as I asked him, "Do what?"
"Make love."
He said no more and pulled me through the flower path straight to the house.
Everything that night felt like a dream when I later recalled it; it was too gentle and too surreal for me to believe it was real—especially when I woke up the next morning nestled in Xiao Minxing's arms, our bodies naturally close together.
Time seemed to skip over all the barriers and unpleasantness in between; from heartfelt affection and admiration blossomed into a reality of love.
His body moved slightly, as if he was about to wake up.
I hurriedly closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep, then felt him slowly pull his arm out from under my neck, his fingertips sliding from my face to my lips.
He got up, and the blanket wrapped around me again.
His footsteps went into the bathroom, then he came out and opened the door to leave.
I anxiously opened my eyes; there was no trace of him in the room, and it was already past seven in the morning.
With no time to think too much, I got up to wash up. When I went downstairs, I was surprised to see food on the dining table. Although simple, it was quite appetizing, especially since I was very hungry. I almost wolfed down my portion.
Suddenly, two more slices of bread appeared on my plate, filled with strawberry jam.
I looked up at Xiao Minxing; his face was as expressionless as a drawn paper figure, and he didn’t look at me as he ate his own food.
I really didn’t know what was wrong with him. He could turn cold faster than flipping a book. Clearly, he had a gentle side but insisted on showing a frosty demeanor. What a strange person.
Thinking aside, I continued eating and finished both slices of bread. Then I heard the ice man say, “Let’s go.”
I froze for a moment before suddenly remembering what he said yesterday about going to the outskirts. Then all those things he did and Mina's words flooded back into my mind.
It felt like glue had stuck to my backside; I couldn’t lift myself up and timidly asked him, “Can I not go?”
“No.”
He had already stood up and casually took the empty plate to the kitchen.
Such diligence is quite strange.
However, while I hesitated, he had already picked up a bag from the wall and walked out the door, casually saying, "I'll wait for you outside."
I hadn't noticed that bag before; I didn't know when he had packed it or what was inside. The images of the psychopathic killers I had seen before flew into my mind like they had grown wings, lingering and refusing to leave.
Outside, the sound of a car horn echoed. Through the glass, I saw Xiao Minxing had already pulled out the car and parked it in the yard.
If he wanted to kill me, he could do it just as easily at home. After all, I was just a lamb waiting to be slaughtered on his chopping board; it seemed like it would be the same anywhere. Moreover, if I didn't go out now, I might provoke him immediately, and that would likely lead to a very miserable death.
I decided to brace myself and go, but I still sent Mina a message before leaving.
The car drove out of the city along a narrow road. Occasionally, I could see a few houses by the roadside, most of which were simple dwellings surrounded by either wasteland or fields growing vegetables or other crops.
The road wasn't very good; it was particularly bumpy. Although Xiao Minxing's car had excellent shock absorption, it still jolted me around quite a bit, and I felt a bit nauseous, as if what I had eaten that morning wanted to come back up to see the scenery.
Xiao Minxing's brows were tightly furrowed as he glanced at the farmland on both sides and then at the road ahead, occasionally stealing a glance at me.
Finally, he reached back and pulled a bottle of water from the back seat for me.
As soon as I took it, a wave of discomfort hit my chest, and the contents of my stomach surged up violently.
