A soft poke seemed to touch my heart, and I hurriedly avoided his gaze, going to tidy up the dishes on the table.
"You don't need to go to the studio tomorrow, come with me to the company."
He stood still and said another sentence.
I was confused and had no idea what he wanted me to do at the company, so I blurted out, "Why?"
The corners of his mouth lifted slightly. A normal person would probably show a smile at this moment, but he didn't; only the skin on his face moved a little, and even the light in his eyes didn't change. His voice was as cold as ice.
"Weren't you worried that I was sick? Come see how I work; maybe it will put your mind at ease and you won't be in such a hurry to leave here."
My jaw almost dropped in shock as I stared at him. Before I could say anything, he leaned closer, his body almost pressed against mine. His fingers had already gripped my chin: "Xiao Minxing is not that easy to kill; you can rest assured."
I dared not look into his eyes. I wanted to turn my gaze away but felt a warmth in my eye sockets, as if my eyeballs were about to pop out, so I could only close my eyes.
He held my chin for a long time, just like every other time in the past, until I felt like I was about to suffocate. Only then did he release his grip, and I slumped down onto the floor. The dishes I had been holding fell with a crash.
Shards of porcelain scattered everywhere, some even bouncing onto my legs, causing a sudden sharp pain and blood began to flow.
Xiao Minxing didn't look at me again and turned to go upstairs.
I sat on the floor for a long time, wondering if Yi Heng had leaked information about me asking about him or if he had discovered it himself.
But I was doing it for his own good; why was he still angry?
I couldn't understand. I never really knew this person. From beginning to end, he was the one pushing everything forward while I was merely a puppet in our marriage.
Slowly getting up, I swept the shards into the trash can. Surprisingly, I didn't shed any tears; instead, I found it somewhat amusing—this way was better; no need to wash up since it broke cleanly.
The wound on my leg was small, and by the time I got upstairs, it had stopped bleeding. The dried blood scab had turned into a red spot resembling a mole, particularly glaring, like someone's eyes.
Well, let him be happy however he wants; it's not like I haven't been to his company before. Maybe seeing it will put my mind at ease.
Before going to sleep, I told myself this and forced myself to sleep, trying not to think about anything.
His company was the same as every time I visited; everyone was busy with their own tasks. The receptionist who had first greeted me had been replaced, though I didn't know when.
The new girl didn't seem as pretty as the previous one, but she had a nice smile. When she saw Xiao Minxing, she didn't rush over to greet him but smiled and nodded like she would to any other employee.
Of course, it was the same for me.
Xiao Minxing's pace wasn't fast; it seemed he was deliberately waiting for me. We walked side by side to the elevator.
His assistants were already there. After he arrived at the office, they first brought in tea and then briefly outlined today's schedule.
Xiao Minxing sipped from his cup without even raising his eyelids. Once the assistant finished speaking, he nodded and said, "Okay, I understand. Just follow the plan."
There were two or three meetings scheduled, and in between, he had to go out to meet an important client. The number of documents that needed his review today was countless.
I couldn't even remember them all and had no idea how he managed to get everything done in one day.
To be honest, if he really were sick, it wouldn't be from anger but from exhaustion. With this kind of workload, even an iron man would struggle.
I was just a spectator today; I had no say in anything and preferred not to draw attention to myself—being invisible would suffice.
Xiao Minxing didn't pay me any mind and had already started working on his tasks.
The approved documents were piled on the side desk as before.
I quietly approached and began sorting them slowly, just like before. By the end, I felt a bit heartbroken looking at the stack of files labeled "C" and said, "Why not delegate those less important tasks to someone else? Working like this will wear you out."
Xiao Minxing turned to look at me, his gaze inscrutable.
I already sensed my slip of the tongue; it was too late to cover my mouth. I could only quickly lower my head and pretend that nothing had happened.
He stared at me for a long time before suddenly pressing the intercom.
His assistant quickly came over, and Xiao Minxing simply said, "Have all the department managers come up for a meeting."
"Right now?"
"Yes."
I hadn’t even figured out what was happening when Xiao Minxing pointed to the pile of documents I had just dismissed and said, "Take them with you and follow me."
He had already walked around the desk and stepped out first.
I didn’t dare to linger any longer, clutching the documents to my chest as I hurried after him.
The meeting room was empty when we arrived, and Xiao Minxing casually found a seat. He reached for the documents I had placed in front of him, flipped through them a few times, and suddenly said, "Go get B's as well."
As I left the meeting room, I saw several managers rushing in.
By the time I brought in the other stack of documents, most people had already gathered. Since Xiao Minxing wasn’t at the front, the managers arranged themselves around him, leaving the front seat conspicuously empty.
I placed the documents in front of him and instinctively stepped back, hoping to stand in a corner where no one would notice me, ideally slipping out quietly.
But before I could reach the entrance, I heard Xiao Minxing say, "You sit down too."
All eyes turned to me, including his, piercing like arrows and blocking my retreat.
A manager sitting to his left hurriedly stood up and offered me his seat.
It was simply a mix of anxiety and fear; after sitting for a while, my heartbeat still hadn't returned to normal, while Xiao Minxing had already spread the documents on the table.
"Take a look and see if there are any issues."
After about ten minutes, aside from a few people raising one or two questions, most remained silent.
Xiao Minxing was not polite either; he glanced around at everyone and said, "From today onwards, these documents are approved for you. You don't need to show them to me."
Two managers immediately exclaimed "Ah," while the others, pretending to be calm, took several minutes before saying, "Mr. Xiao, the amounts involved here are too large, and some projects are really significant..."
Xiao Minxing interrupted before he could finish, asking, "Are you worried you won't do well, or are you afraid of facing the consequences?"
The manager hesitated for a long time before saying, "What if something goes wrong?"
"There won't be a 'what if.' If you're really uncertain, you can hold a small group meeting first."
The manager fell silent, but his expression didn't look good; perhaps the burden was indeed heavy, and the money involved was substantial.
Xiao Minxing scanned everyone again and asked, "Are there any more questions?"
Looking at their expressions, it was clear there were still issues; however, it seemed no one was willing to speak up now.
