I can see that she never intended to give me any advice, but rather was trying to persuade me to turn back.
Every word she said sounded like she was asking me for a reason, but in fact, it was all about how Xiao Minxing is different now compared to before.
He is now close to the standard of a good man.
“Mina, I’ve noticed you’ve changed. Where did the energetic girl go?”
After realizing this, even my tone when speaking to her changed.
Mina leaned back against her chair and said with some emotion, “I guess it’s a matter of gaining wisdom through experience. Love is something that cannot be forced, but as you said before, we should cherish the person in front of us.”
At this point, she glanced at me and lowered her voice a bit: “If it were the old Xiao Minxing, I would definitely support you. In fact, you know my previous attitude. But now it’s different; he’s like a wild tree growing untamed. You’ve worked so hard and spent so much time carefully pruning its branches, only to let someone else take it away. Don’t you think that’s a pity?”
“What if this tree has no interest in you at all?” I said with a bitter smile.
Mina shook her head and said, “Actually, we didn’t really understand him before, did we? You say he has no feelings for you, and I believed it. You say he’s unfaithful and looking for women outside; I believed that too. But now I realize we might have been wrong.”
Hearing this, I had to look up at Mina.
“What do you mean? Isn’t he looking for women outside? He even brought women home right in front of me; they were in the room together making those sounds.”
Mina burst out laughing and cautiously glanced around before asking, “Did you observe the whole thing or just hear the sounds without seeing the actual scene?”
“Does it make a difference? A man and a woman locked in a room, disheveled and making those kinds of sounds—how could that be fake?” As I thought back to how Xiao Minxing treated me initially, even though time had passed and my feelings toward him had changed somewhat, I still felt angry inside.
However, Mina seemed to see things differently: “Maybe there really is a chance it’s not what it seems. Do you know what people outside say about him?”
I didn’t know; I had never interacted with people from his circle. Even when I later went to his company, I never chatted with his colleagues. Besides, regarding matters like this, his colleagues might not even know about it. Even if they did know, they wouldn’t necessarily tell me; it's not like they wanted to lose their jobs.
“He’s a ‘celibate male god,’” Mina said, sounding quite gossipy as she whispered to me: “Simply put, if a beautiful woman were stripped naked in front of him, he wouldn’t even have any thoughts.”
Is that really true? I don’t think so; every time it was him who stripped me down, and I wouldn’t even consider myself beautiful—at least not in the way those beauties act to please him.
So I don't believe Mina's words, and I don't want to listen any further. I shook my head and said, "Enough, don't flatter him. I know what kind of person he is better than you do. Although I don't know the rumors outside, I've lived with him for almost a year. Nothing has happened, not even a child lost; what desires can be forbidden?"
After I said this, both Mina and I were taken aback. It seemed she suddenly recalled those unbearable past moments between us, and we sat in silence drinking the cold beverages in front of us.
As for me, those long-buried pains resurfaced, slowly peeling away the facade of our seemingly calm yet utterly trivial lives.
When we parted ways, Mina said, "If you've really made up your mind, maybe you could look for Su Qian."
After saying that, she suddenly added, "Forget it, maybe it's better not to involve him. I'm afraid the more people get involved, the more complicated it will become."
Su Qian was originally part of my plan; it was just that Lu Yishan was too incompetent, so he wasn't utilized either. Now that Mina mentioned it, I recalled this gentle young man who had studied psychology.
Coincidentally, Xiao Minxing also had a similar mental illness; perhaps he had some clever way to help us separate smoothly.
I just always felt that Su Qian was too smart. Even though he never showed any hint of it in front of me, I couldn't help but feel wary of him deep down, as if people are inherently afraid of the dark.
When I finally met Su Qian, another week had passed, and it was Xiao Minxing who insisted that I meet him.
That day was strange; it was supposed to be a weekend, but Xiao Minxing said he had some matters to handle at work. I didn't think much of it and drove out to drop him off.
As we both left the house, he picked up his phone to make a call but realized his phone was dead.
This situation was quite rare; he usually had chargers at home and in the office, and his phone's standby time was generally sufficient. Even if something came up, he could make a call once he reached a certain location. But today seemed particularly urgent.
He casually asked me, "Where's your phone?"
Without thinking much, I tossed my bag to him.
As he reached inside to find my phone, he also pulled out a box.
I glanced at the box but didn't pay much attention to it. I couldn't even remember when it had been stuffed inside. Sometimes I would carry a bag once and leave it at home only to grab another bag later. Perhaps one day when I wore something that matched it, I'd take it out again. So sometimes I wasn't even clear about what was in my bag.
Xiao Minxing stopped making calls and studied the box for a long time before finally opening it to see what was inside.
During this process, I kept driving forward without deliberately looking inside the box. At that moment, I thought maybe it was some small jewelry he had given me before that I casually stuffed into my bag.
But Xiao Minxing quickly asked, "Where did this come from?"
I shook my head and said, "I don't remember. What's inside?"
He turned the box towards me.
Inside was a white necklace. I couldn't tell if it was platinum or silver; I only noticed that the pendant was adorned with several shiny diamonds, which were quite eye-catching.
I truly had no impression of it, and Xiao Minxing continued to ask, "Where did this come from?"
I couldn't recall and didn't want him to get angry over it, so I vaguely said, "Maybe I bought it myself somewhere? I really don't remember."
"Is that so? Where did you get so much money?" His face had completely darkened, his eyes fixed on me, and even the fingers gripping the box turned pale.
I glanced at the item inside, trying hard to think and figure out where it came from, but my mind felt blank and couldn't process anything.
"Is... is this very expensive? How much is it? I don't know; I really forgot where it came from. Did you give it to me?"
Xiao Minxing suddenly exploded in anger, slamming the box into the car with a loud bang.
I instinctively reacted by quickly hitting the brakes.
