That place carried too much for me; it seemed that all the joys and sorrows of life happened in just a few months, and all of it took place there.
Standing by the window, the past played like an old movie, scenes sliding by before my eyes, from the day I married into the Xiao family to my recent departure from home.
It's sad to say that since that rainy night when I left, I have never returned.
I was hospitalized, and after being discharged, I came to Mina's house. No one has told me how Xiao Minxing is doing now, whether he will fall ill again is unknown. Even when Lu Yiheng came last time, he kept quiet.
So far, he has asked me twice and had Lu Yiheng ask once.
All the questions were about the child; how I was seemed unimportant.
It turns out he really never loved me; he only wanted to find the rightful place for this unexpected child after everything happened.
Although I had known this outcome for a long time, thinking about it again still hurt deeply.
People can be strange; when they are fixated on something, they never see its flaws. They only think about what it would be like if they obtained it one day. But once they let go, they suddenly realize it's not that great after all, and those past obsessions seem so ridiculous.
I glanced at the time on my phone; it wasn't yet midnight, so I stood up to call Su Qian.
He took a long time to answer, and the background noise was still quite loud; he must still be outside.
I initially wanted to exchange pleasantries with him, but after thinking for a long time, I didn't know what to say and wasn't in the mood. So I directly said, "I agree."
Not hearing Su Qian's voice made everything else seem much quieter.
I tightly gripped my phone, feeling anxious inside, unsure if he didn't hear my words clearly or if he was processing what I said or considering whether this was feasible.
Thinking of this, I repeated, "That plan you mentioned during the day, I agreed to it."
Su Qian responded quickly this time, his voice clear and concise: "Okay, I'll arrange the next steps."
"But Xiao Minxing told me today that no matter if the child is his or not, he won't get a divorce," I said anxiously.
Su Qian paused for two seconds before speaking again: "It's late today. Don't think too much. Just rest for now. We'll meet tomorrow to discuss the details of the conversation with him."
In fact, I was afraid of facing Xiao Minxing. Deciding in my heart was one thing, but when I actually saw him, his appearance and expression would start to shake my resolve.
Whether I said I couldn't let go or that I was fearful of him, it was always difficult to express my thoughts and stance completely when facing him. More often than not, I found myself being persuaded by him.
However, if Su Qian really intervened in this matter, the situation would be different.
His aura might not be as strong as Xiao Minxing's, but he seemed calm at all times, unlike Xiao Minxing, who appeared anxious and insecure due to his rage.
I put down my phone and lay back down on the bed, still unable to sleep.
My eyes were fixed on the ceiling above me, and for some reason, I couldn't help but wonder where Su Qian might be at that moment.
Mina had said that he partied outside every night. The background noise during our phone call earlier indicated that he was still out. However, one would expect someone who lived such a nightlife to look sluggish during the day. Yet every time I saw him—whether by chance or on purpose—he always appeared energetic, showing no signs of sleep deprivation.
This reminded me of the night before I was hospitalized.
It was already past midnight that night. Although I knew Su Qian lived nearby, I didn't consider calling him; neither the time nor our relationship seemed appropriate for a call at that hour.
Yet he called me instead. Before that moment, we rarely spoke on the phone, let alone in the middle of the night.
My phone had just passed midnight; even Mina rarely called at that hour. The only times she did were occasionally when Xiao Minxing wasn't home and she needed to reach out to him.
So how did he remember to call at that time that night?
Could it be that he has some sort of divination skills and just knew I would get sick?
So many things happened later that my life became increasingly chaotic, and I never thought to ask him. Looking back now, the whole thing is quite bizarre.
Since I am going to see him tomorrow, I might as well ask him and clear up my doubts.
But plans really can't keep up with changes.
The next morning, before I even left to meet Su Qian, my phone rang.
Seeing the unfamiliar number on the screen, I wasn't planning to answer it. However, the caller kept calling repeatedly, and eventually, Mina curiously came over and asked, "Why aren't you answering?"
"Probably a spam call?" I replied nonchalantly.
She glanced at the screen and said, "It's a local number from Haicheng, and spam calls wouldn't call this many times."
Alright then, let's pick it up and see.
I was surprised to actually hear a voice on the other end of the line.
It was Xiao Minhui.
This sister of Xiao Minxing has probably spoken to me less than ten times since we got married, and she had never left her phone number or anything like that. Even if she had something to discuss, she would go find Xiao Minxing.
She has never regarded me highly, and I never took her seriously either. Especially when I saw her sometimes looking down on Xiao Minxing, it made me feel even more disgusted.
Before I could recover from my surprise, she spoke first: "Anan, are you free today?"
I didn't know what she meant, so I just responded with a "hm," waiting for her to continue.
Her tone wasn't very pleasant, but it didn't have that usual condescending look either. She tried to sound somewhat enthusiastic, but to me, it still felt cold and a bit impatient.
"It's a pity, really. Since you married Xiao Minxing, even though I'm the eldest sister, I've been too busy to talk to you much. Since the weather is nice today, why don't we have a meal together?"
I was so shocked that I almost forgot how to respond.
Did this Xiao Family young lady take something strange today? Eating with me? What does this mean? When did we become familiar enough to have a meal together? Not long ago, she saw Xiao Minxing and me returning to the old house together, looking all bitter and resentful. It hasn't been long since then, and now she acts like she's really trained to be my sister-in-law. It's all too bizarre.
Mina was watching me from the side and mouthed, "What's going on?"
I covered the microphone and quickly told her, "Xiao Minxing's elder sister wants to invite me to dinner."
Mina's expression wasn't much better than mine as she asked, "Are you two close?"
I shook my head.
She shook her head too and walked away without saying anything more.
Xiao Minhui was still waiting for my response, but by now I had calmed down and remembered my appointment with Su Qian, so I directly asked her, "Elder sister, if you have something to say, just say it. I have plans with someone else today."
