As soon as I entered the house, I threw my things on the floor without bothering to tidy up and directly called Xiao Minxing.
He picked up quickly, and after hearing my question, he said something similar to what that man had said: "I don't know; he might just want to help you. As for my name, it shouldn't be surprising. Many people in Haicheng know me, and of course, quite a few know that you are my ex-wife."
I couldn't keep up with his words. I still held the mobile phone in my hand but didn't know what else to say to him.
There was a moment of silence on his end, and after a long while, he casually asked, "Are you very scared?"
His reminder made me realize that my heart was still racing, and my fingers were gripping the phone tightly. My breathing wasn't steady at all. I couldn't figure out if it was because I was afraid of that man in black or if it was just the tension from talking to Xiao Minxing.
But saying that directly to him didn't seem appropriate, so I attributed the issue to the man in black and quietly said, "I've seen him twice before; he feels a bit scary."
Xiao Minxing paused before asking, "Have you told Mina about this?"
"Not yet. I don't know what he wants to do, and Mina is getting along better with Zhuo Feng now. I think she probably wants a stable life."
In the past, we rarely talked about others; we couldn't even sort out our own issues. Every time we tried to have a calm conversation, it would inevitably lead to an argument. I never expected that after the divorce, in this situation, I would end up discussing Mina's relationship with him over the phone.
Actually, with Xiao Minxing's intelligence, he should have been able to pick up on some things. However, since he wasn't familiar with Mina or Zhuo Feng and generally didn't like meddling in other people's affairs, I regretted what I said immediately and quickly added,
"Forget it; I'll ask Mina tomorrow. Maybe she knows something."
As soon as I finished speaking, Xiao Minxing said on the other end, "She might not know. You might as well tell me; perhaps we can do something in advance."
"Huh? Tell you?" I instinctively replied with a question.
However, Xiao Minxing responded with a thoughtful "mm," as if weighing his words or deliberately creating an atmosphere. After a few seconds, he continued, "If she's been in contact with him for so long and doesn't even know his identity, what can she tell you? If you recklessly tell her that such a person has appeared, it will only make her more anxious and might even cause more trouble."
What he said made a lot of sense and was exactly what I had been worried about at first.
However, I find it hard to imagine what Xiao Minxing could do to help me, or rather, what he could do to help Mina. His attitude and thinking about love and marriage are frighteningly extreme. If he feels this way about me, can he really be rational towards others?
While I hesitated on this side, he spoke again: "Of course, you don't have to say anything. After all, this is someone else's business. No matter how much you care, it won't help. You don't know who is more emotionally invested or who is more important to whom. It might even end up being counterproductive."
I realized that this Good Fellow also had a knack for reading people's hearts. Even though we were separated by a phone line, it seemed like he knew exactly what I was thinking. He could also gradually close off my options, and now I almost regretted contacting him. Not only had I accomplished nothing, but I also ended up with the reputation of meddling in others' affairs.
Feeling disheartened, I took a breath and said, "Alright then, I'll pretend nothing happened."
Xiao Minxing laughed on the other end. Since I couldn't see his expression, I couldn't tell if it was a cold laugh or just a casual chuckle. My previously relaxed mood tightened up again.
Before he could speak again, I said, "Sorry to bother you; I'm hanging up now."
But he quickly stopped me and said, "Wait."
I held the mobile phone tightly and held my breath to listen to his voice.
His tone was much softer now; the initial arrogance and superiority had diminished, replaced by a rare warmth.
"You can't just pretend nothing happened. You still need to be careful when you go out. Also, maybe you should consider hiring a nanny or something to take care of you."
I didn't immediately agree with him; in fact, I didn't respond at all to his suggestion. However, after the call ended, I felt warm inside for quite a while.
This feeling was different from before. During our marriage, he rarely acted this way. Even when he did occasionally show concern, it made me anxious and led me to think it was how things should be.
Perhaps many people feel this way; in an unequal marriage over time, every little change makes one speculate about the other's motives. When it's confirmed that it's not like that, one suddenly realizes that marriage should inherently be about mutual warmth and tends to block out such care.
But once there is no marital relationship, we are essentially just two strangers.
When we parted ways, I wasn't kind to him. During his illness, I forced him into divorce in that manner. Now even if his attitude towards me is worse than before, I would understand and forgive him. Yet things turned out to be quite the opposite.
He seemed to have suddenly changed into a different person. He didn't take the initiative to approach me, but if I reached out to him, he showed more enthusiasm than before. This puzzled me and left me unable to let go for a long time; I always felt that there was still something between us.
Could he have already known about the child?
Xiao Minxing is a clever person, so it wouldn't be difficult for him to guess that the child is his. He could use many means to prove that this child belongs to him. What confuses me is that since he has discovered this, why doesn't he come forward and say anything?
I couldn't understand at all. That night, after talking to him on the phone, my heart remained unsettled for a long time. I sat alone by the window, looking out at the world outside.
Haicheng is a rapidly developing modern city in recent years. A few years ago, the area where I lived was still overgrown with weeds, but now it has become the expanded city center, and the surrounding facilities are particularly complete.
From my window, I can see the flickering neon lights on the road outside, as well as the streams of cars and people moving under the lights.
Directly across from the community is a row of shops, and further down is a chain kindergarten in the city.
If I continue living here, it won't be difficult for my child to go to school in the future.
I even dare not think about Xiao Minxing's original intention in buying this building. There are too many things between us that cannot be shared, including our feelings for each other.
Yet on such a night, sitting quietly on the windowsill, my mind was filled with his shadow.
Has he changed? Perhaps I have changed; I feel that my love for him is not as strong as before, nor is my hatred for him as sorrowful. It seems that many things can be understood, and many feelings can be softened.
