When Jin Ke woke me up, I was drenched in sweat and feeling extremely anxious.
After drinking a glass of water, I felt a bit better. As I struggled to get up, I heard the sound of rain outside and asked Jin Ke, "When did it start raining?"
She glanced at the time and said, "It's been about three or four hours. It started shortly after you fell asleep."
"No wonder I slept so soundly; it turns out it was the sound of rain," I murmured.
Jin Ke didn't hear me clearly and hurriedly asked, "Sister An, what did you say?"
I smiled at her and looked out the window, saying, "I heard from a psychologist that the sound of rain has a hypnotic effect. So whenever it rains, people tend to fall asleep easily and sleep very deeply."
"Is that so? I hadn't really noticed before, but now that you mention it, it does make some sense."
Jin Ke has a great personality; she's quite friendly and since we're not too far apart in age, we quickly found topics to talk about. In fact, because of what Xiao Minxing said earlier, I felt a bit inferior towards her.
According to the traditions of my culture, those who come to serve are usually uneducated and have to endure hardships. However, Jin Ke is a university student, with a higher level of education than me, and she has opportunities for better jobs.
I, on the other hand, didn't even finish high school before entering society. Over the years, I haven't achieved much. The only difference is that I was once married to Xiao Minxing; otherwise, I wouldn't have the money to hire a nanny. It's possible that if I were to be a nanny myself, no one would want me.
At this moment, I was sitting in the living room while she brought out a plate of fruit. She peeled each piece and cut them into small chunks before handing me a small fork and saying, "Why don't you eat some fruit first, Sister An? How about we make porridge for dinner?"
I moved the fruit plate to the center and reached for another fork to give her, saying, "You should eat too. Don't treat me like a patient; I'm just a bit lazy and don't want to cook."
Jin Ke immediately smiled and said, "I heard Mr. Xiao mention that you still have work and are also pregnant, so it's only right that you receive care. Besides, if I came here and didn't do anything, then why would I even come, right?"
I didn't remember Xiao Minxing telling her these things, so I asked, "When did he tell you that?"
Jin Ke thought for a moment and replied, "It was after you fell asleep. He came back to drop off the car keys and casually mentioned a few things to me, like what you usually like to eat and what you should pay attention to in your daily life."
Is this concern for me? Unfortunately, I had no idea and just fell asleep, as if I was deliberately avoiding him.
Seeing me lost in thought, Jin Ke smiled and said, "Mr. Xiao really cares about Sister An. He even worried that I might forget and specifically wrote it down."
She stood up and handed me a folded piece of paper.
On it were lines of handwriting, the strokes impressively deep as if they were etched into my heart, each stroke carrying a subtle pain.
Every item listed reflected my daily habits or preferences, and not a single one was incorrect.
I had been estranged from Xiao Minxing for too long, always feeling like we were living in entirely different worlds, let alone understanding each other. I was with him to pursue the dreams of my youth, while he was completely ensnared by my design, innocently trapped and filled with resentment towards me.
I never expected that he would understand me so well, even noticing the smallest details of my life.
The paper was drawing paper, very light, but at that moment it felt incredibly heavy in my hand.
I handed it back to Jin Ke, my heart filled with mixed emotions as I looked at her and asked, "Did he say anything else?"
She shook her head, but quickly said, "Oh, he left me his phone number and said to call him if anything comes up."
"Don't." I instinctively rejected her statement, my expression so agitated that it surprised even me. A piece of apple on my fork fell to the ground.
Jin Ke hurriedly got up to pick it up and throw it in the trash. She was a smart girl and didn’t ask why; she just nodded at me and said, "Okay, I understand."
Actually, the next day I told her about my relationship with Xiao Minxing. This was partly to make things easier for her when she was doing certain things, and partly because I didn’t want Jin Ke to think our relationship was unclear, which might lead her to get more involved in my life.
Right now, a calm life was the most important thing for me.
Tuesday was the day I was supposed to meet Bai Xiaoqing. I originally didn’t want Jin Ke to come along, but she was worried about me going out alone. She insisted on taking the heavy manuscript from my hands and helped me carry my bag, the car keys, and the keys to the door.
On the way, she even smiled and said, "Sister An, I have a driver's license and can drive. If you’re okay with it, let me take care of it."
It wasn't that I didn't trust her; I just felt uncomfortable suddenly having someone else take over my entire life when I was perfectly healthy and capable. So I declined.
Bai Xiaoqing's company wasn’t far from where I lived; it was in the same neighborhood. The roads were relatively smooth, and we arrived in just over ten minutes.
After Jin Ke and I took the elevator up, we saw the sign pointing to "Anxing Comic Studio."
Jin Ke confirmed with me, "Sister An, is this the place?"
I nodded at her, already seeing Bai Xiaoqing walking over from the reception area, smiling as she greeted us.
“Miss Qiu, this way please. Sorry for making you come to the company only now.”
Initially, my doubts about them had long faded away under Mina's subtle influence. Upon entering, I saw the minimalist decor style and the comic characters printed on the walls, which surprisingly gave me a sense of familiarity.
I smiled sincerely and said to her, “It’s okay, I just didn’t expect us to be so close.”
Bai Xiaoqing did not hide her thoughts and candidly said, “We originally chose another location, but later felt that it wasn’t very good, so the boss decided to move here. It took a bit longer to choose the site, which is why it delayed your arrival.”
It seems I am indeed one of the first artists for their company.
The entire studio is about two hundred square meters, and there aren’t many office staff. However, it looks like there are quite a few spaces; aside from a few meeting rooms separated by walls, the president's office and the accounting room, the central area is entirely an office space.
Bai Xiaoqing led us directly into the conference room. After placing a cup of plain water in front of me, she began to review the drawings I brought.
She didn’t say much, only informing me that they would contact me further after the reviewers had looked over my work.
Jin Ke sat beside me without interrupting or appearing nervous; in fact, she seemed even calmer than I was. So after Bai Xiaoqing reviewed my sketches, she turned her attention to her and asked, “Who is this?”
I felt a bit embarrassed to say she was my nanny, so I casually replied, “A friend who came with me.”
Jin Ke greeted her warmly, and when she glanced back at me, there was a sparkle in her eyes. Bai Xiaoqing seemed to notice her change and asked again, “Is this young lady also interested in our comics?”
