Mina walked in at just the right moment, surprised to see me and said, “Anan, what are you doing here? Oh my gosh, shopping with you is such a hassle. Xiao Zong even asked me to keep an eye on you, and I ended up losing track of you…”
At that moment, it seemed like she just noticed Xiao Minhui and exclaimed, “Isn’t this the eldest daughter of the Xiao Family, Xiao Zong? What a coincidence! I’m a friend of Anan.”
Although Mina was already quite impressive in my world and well-known in the entire Haicheng business district, the Xiao Family had been wealthy for generations, while Mina could only be considered a worker. Moreover, Zhuo Feng’s company wasn’t notable enough to attract attention, so Xiao Minhui didn’t take her seriously at all. She didn’t even glance at Mina as she stood up and walked outside.
Mina stood there watching her leave and muttered, “Dressed like a fat mouse, but her eyes are on top of her head.”
I nearly spat out the sip of tea I had just taken, staring at her for a while before saying, “You’re quite good at insulting people.”
Mina plopped down in the chair that Xiao Minhui had just vacated and said irritably, “What can I do? You won’t help me speak up.”
“I don’t have that ability; I’m just trying not to get bullied by you.”
Upon hearing this, Mina pretended to come over and hit me but then noticed two girls walking towards us. She smiled and withdrew her hand, introducing me to her two colleagues.
The four women together were quite happy. To thank them for their help, Mina generously treated them to a Western meal. Afterwards, she told me, “This money is going to be reimbursed; I did it all for your sake.”
I reached out for the receipt and said, “Alright, I’ll give it to Xiao Zong when I get back. Maybe he’ll thank you by treating you to another meal.”
When Mina heard this, she got annoyed and pulled me closer saying, “You’re such a backstabber, a Good Fellow who takes advantage of others!”
After her colleagues finished eating, they left first. Mina walked me to the Community Entrance and said, “Alright, I won’t go in. You should call your nanny to come pick you up.”
I sat in the car and called Sister Liu, but the person who came out from the Entrance was Xiao Minxing.
He quickly glanced at Mina and then looked at me asking, “Where are the things you bought?”
At that moment, Mina also looked at me with a confused expression.
I was sweating profusely and hurriedly said, “They weren’t suitable. Mina misreported the situation and insisted that the maternity products there were good. I checked them out and found the quality lacking, so I didn’t buy anything.”
Mina shot me a glare filled with frustration but eventually backed me up saying, “Why not mention that your standards are too high? Fifty percent of the children in Haicheng use products from their family.”
To avoid dragging this out further, I interrupted her saying, “But still, thank you for your introduction. How about coming over to our place for lunch?”
Mina hadn't said anything yet when Xiao Minxing had already pulled me inside, giving her no chance to respond.
I turned to look at Mina; her face was pale with anger as she was shaking her fist at Xiao Minxing behind us.
However, as soon as we stepped into the house, Xiao Minxing's previous coldness disappeared. He stared at me intently and asked, "What did you eat outside?"
"Ah? I didn't eat anything," I stammered.
His gaze immediately darkened, and he lifted my chin with his fingers, speaking with displeasure, "Then I'll just have to smell it myself."
"Don't, don't, don't." I hurriedly glanced towards the kitchen entrance, fearing Sister Liu would come out and see us. I quickly said, "Seafood. Mina said she hadn't eaten out in a long time, so I wanted to try it too, so we went together."
Only then did Xiao Minxing release his grip and shot me a glance, saying, "Eating is just eating; why do you have to say you went shopping? Are you lying out of anxiety or do you think my punishment for you isn't enough?"
Being seen through so quickly was really disheartening. Fortunately, he only figured out that we went out to eat and didn't realize who I was with. The weight in my heart finally lifted.
But this was just the beginning; there were too many things I wanted to clarify. It was inevitable that I would have more interactions with them in the future, so it was better to be cautious.
After lunch, we went to the study room. I've gotten so lazy that it's become a habit; aside from the exercises prescribed by the doctor, I basically don't want to move at all. Now that my belly is bigger, lying down to rest isn't even comfortable; no matter how I lie down, it feels tiring. The number of times I wake up at night has also increased. Sometimes it feels like I've slept through the night, but I still wake up feeling exhausted in the morning.
Lunch is usually the most drowsy time, so I returned to the bedroom.
I thought I heard some noise at the door but was too lazy to open my eyes and check.
When I finally woke up for real, Xiao Minxing was already gone. Sister Liu said he had left and didn't wake me up since I was sleeping but told her that I couldn't go out until he returned.
I looked out the window and sighed, "What's the difference between this and house arrest?"
Sister Liu has become familiar with us over time and sometimes chats with me. She smiled and said, "Xiao Zong is just worried about you; he doesn't really want to restrict your freedom."
Knowing that is one thing, but dealing with this situation can't be taken lightly.
Fortunately, Xiao Minxing returned early in the afternoon and specifically took me out for a stroll. He somewhat guiltily said, "I know you're feeling cooped up. Once the baby is born and it's easier for you to move around, it'll be better. Right now, I'm genuinely scared."
I nodded, linking my arm with his as we watched the sunset fall behind the building in the distance.
After a long while, Xiao Minxing finally asked, "When do you plan on having our remarriage?"
"Ah?" I turned to look at him.
He shot me a glance and said, "What do you mean 'ah'? If we don't remarry, you're a single mother. What will happen to the household registration and the necessary procedures when the child is born?"
"But..."
He immediately interrupted, "But what? Do you really want to live freely from now on and just dump me?"
"I didn't! I just thought this matter wasn't urgent, right?" I couldn't even look him in the eye; he looked really fierce at that moment.
Xiao Minxing directly grabbed my chin and said, "Not urgent? Your due date is before the New Year, and there are less than two months left. Plus, there are many public holidays and weekends in between. If you strictly calculate the time, we have less than a month."
I widened my eyes as I watched him count the days for me. After deducting the time for eating and sleeping, we only had a week left to go to the civil affairs bureau.
"No way? Is it really that short?" I asked him.
Xiao Minxing nodded seriously and said, "That doesn't even account for how slow you are sometimes or how inefficient you can be. If we add that in, we only have three and a half days."
I was completely stunned, staring blankly for a while before saying, "Isn't that where the term 'shady businessman' comes from?"
Xiao Minxing couldn't help but laugh for a moment but then suddenly realized he might have let his guard down. He quickly put on a serious face again and said, "If you say you don't have any bad intentions, why not remarry sooner?"
