This made my nose tingle, and I originally wanted to reach for her hand, but even bending down felt clumsy. I just shook my head and said, "When I trouble you, I never think about whether we are good friends; I just want you to take responsibility for me."
Mina smiled slightly and then asked me, "What time is it?"
I remembered that Xiao Minxing had gone to work, so it was probably around nine o'clock. Still, I comforted her by saying, "If you're not feeling well, take a day off. There's no need to push yourself like a wound-up toy, rushing around every day."
To my surprise, Mina nodded seriously and said, "I'm planning to resign and go out for a walk."
"Huh? Going out again?"
My mind immediately recalled the time she went out and ran into her elusive ex-boyfriend. A heartbroken woman alone outside is the easiest target for unscrupulous men.
I knew Mina was strong, but she was hurt now, and her heart was fragile. So I hoped she would stay in Haicheng; at least we could look out for each other.
"Look at my belly; it's so big now. Who knows when I'll give birth? If you don't stay here with me, where are you going alone?" I asked Mina.
She looked up and tidied her messy hair before saying, "With Xiao Minxing around, I'm not worried."
"He's a man; he can't compare to you. There are many things I still need to say to you to feel better." My grievances were genuine; I truly felt incredibly upset inside.
Finding friends is easy, but finding someone who genuinely cares for you is difficult. Mina had been there for me during my tough times, and now that she was unhappy, I could only focus on my own matters. I felt really guilty.
We both fell silent for a long time. I made an effort to sit up against the headboard and took her hand, saying, "This is your godson. When he is born and you're not around, won't you be afraid he won't recognize you?"
Mina gave a wry smile and said helplessly, "I won't be gone long; I just really don't want to go to work."
"Then don't go! Resigning doesn't mean you have to leave Haicheng. Who says you can't stay if you're not working?" I hurriedly said.
After a while, she nodded slightly and said, "Okay, I'll think about it."
But before I heard back from Mina, I instead received news from Zhuo Feng.
He has fallen in love, and his girlfriend is from his own company, and she is one of his subordinates.
This news was told to me by Xiao Minxing. His expression was quite playful as he sat in the study chair, drawing on paper with a pen while sharing this information.
Then he lifted his eyelids to look at me and asked, "Now you really should go check on her."
I was momentarily stunned, hardly believing my ears, and asked him, "What did you just say? Zhuo Feng has a girlfriend?"
Xiao Minxing nodded and said, "I heard that the woman is not inferior to Mina, and she has been infatuated with Zhuo Feng for a long time. Most importantly, it seems she has some influence and background in Haicheng."
My anger flared up immediately: "Having a background is impressive? Then why is she out doing things? She could just stay home and be taken care of."
Xiao Minxing put down the pen and covered my hand with his, saying, "Don't be angry yet. I'm just objectively analyzing their situation for you. If she were someone who was nothing compared to Mina, even if they are together now, as long as Zhuo Feng still has feelings for Mina, there wouldn't be much concern about them breaking up in the future. But she's different; she's serious and shouldn't be toyed with."
I almost despairingly asked, "So you're saying Zhuo Feng is serious about her?"
Xiao Minxing didn't directly answer that question but continued to analyze for me: "He's actually not bad, especially towards Mina. He's been very generous; I heard he even gave her thirty percent of the company's shares. But what has Mina done these years? She’s been throwing tantrums, finding boyfriends, and causing all sorts of trouble."
I felt unfair for Mina but couldn't think of a single retort against Xiao Minxing's words. If Mina were doing well now and wasn't heartbroken over this matter, then whatever she did would be justified. She doesn't love Zhuo Feng, so everything she does is right in her eyes. But the situation is the opposite; perhaps she didn't love him before, but now she has gradually fallen into a habitual care for him, yet that person who cared for her wants to withdraw.
"Do you know how Mina is doing now?" I asked while grabbing Xiao Minxing's hand, almost afraid to call her.
Xiao Minxing calmly replied, "She shouldn't be doing too badly. That time when she got drunk was probably when Zhuo Feng pushed her away. So I only heard that she's been planning to resign recently; I don't know the specifics."
"Then will you go see her with me?" I looked at Xiao Minxing and said with a pleading tone, "I'm really worried about her but don't know what I can do for her."
Xiao Minxing didn't get up immediately but said, "It's late now; I'll accompany you tomorrow. However, she's a very rational person. After getting through the initial sadness, she should recover quickly."
How could that be? Every woman is emotional; I am, and Mina even more so.
She just wants to fight in this cruel society to make herself appear better in others' eyes, so she has to suppress her emotions. But those suppressed feelings won't just disappear on their own.
That night, after talking with Xiao Minxing, I called Mina.
She didn't joke with me like before, but I couldn't hear any sadness in her voice. She simply said that she was in the process of resigning and would definitely have results before the Spring Festival.
In the end, she laughed and said, "Finally, I don't have to be busy with work for the year-end, and I won't have to work overtime."
I felt a deep pang in my heart and took a long time to find my voice to say, "I'll come see you tomorrow."
Mina briefly replied, "Don't come over. I'll come find you after work. With my belly so big now, if I go out, your old Xiao will be scared to death. I'm fine, really."
I didn't know what she meant by "fine," but the next day, I still went with Xiao Minxing to their company.
I went to find Mina while he went upstairs to see Zhuo Feng.
She was sitting behind her desk looking at me, and surprisingly, she smiled and asked, "How is it? Do I look much better than last time?"
I didn't know what to say and silently sat down across from her.
Mina quickly got up, stuffed her cushion behind me, and then pulled a chair to sit next to me. Suddenly changing her tone, she said, "People are quite interesting; after getting hurt a lot, you become numb. Last time I had a breakup, I felt like I couldn't go on living; it felt like the whole world was collapsing. But this time, I only got drunk once and nothing happened."
"Maybe it's because you didn't love him enough?" I said softly.
