Mina stayed at our house for a day, and the two of them did nothing but hide away to discuss the situation of the Xiao Family and why Mrs. Xiao was like that.
But by evening, they still hadn't come to any conclusions. She got up, stretched, and said, "Ah, I used to envy those young masters and princesses born with a silver spoon in their mouths. I thought having a good father made them inherently more noble, and they didn't have to worry about money or struggle. This Xiao Zong has taught me a lesson: it's better to rely on oneself. Just look at this whole family; just seeing them gives me a headache."
I didn't know what to say. After sending her off, I started counting the time on my fingers, hoping Xiao Minxing would finish his work soon and that Mother-in-law would return to the old house quickly.
Xiao Minxing came back very late that night. After entering the house, he looked unwell and seemed displeased with everyone, shutting himself in the Study Room.
I initially wanted to check on him, but Mother-in-law was quicker and brought him a cup of tea first. They must have talked for a while because she came out a few minutes later.
I couldn't read anything from her expression; after coming out, she returned to her room.
When I entered the Study Room, Xiao Minxing was frowning at the data on his computer. There were a lot of graphs filled with dense numbers; just one glance made my head spin, so I quickly looked away and sat down beside him without disturbing him.
After a while, Xiao Minxing turned to me and asked, "Why aren't you going to sleep?"
I looked at him and said, "I'm not tired; I just want to sit with you for a while."
He got up and draped a blanket over my legs, then touched my belly and said, "Do you feel anything special right now? It looks really big."
"Yes, it should be soon; it feels like it's dropping heavily. Once you're done with work in these couple of days, we should go for a check-up, okay?"
Xiao Minxing immediately replied, "We'll go tomorrow; this can't wait."
I casually glanced at his computer and asked, "You're busy right now. We want to keep things quiet during the New Year, so let's focus on handling things well. How about I call Mina tomorrow and ask her to come over with Mom? The three of us should be able to manage."
Xiao Minxing shook his head and said, "No matter how busy I am, this is more important. I'll take you tomorrow."
After he finished speaking, he paused for a moment before continuing, "It's not that I'm particularly busy; it's just a bit annoying. I went to the old house tonight because Father asked me to go back. You know how noisy it is there every day."
I placed my hand on his and asked, "What’s making noise now? Didn't things settle down on Brother's side? Mom isn't home either."
Xiao Minxing sneered coldly and said, "How could it be settled? Li Ru thought she had transferred all the money from Xiao Minfeng's hands, which is why she proposed a divorce. Now she’s discovered that he still has something left and wants to come back. This part should have been arranged by Father earlier; even Xiao Minfeng only found out about it recently. But once this matter came up, his arrogance surged, and now he insists on getting a divorce."
Their marriage was maintained by money, so this situation was somewhat expected. However, what I didn't understand was that even if Li Ru hadn't taken everything, she must have taken quite a bit for herself. Does she really want to wipe Xiao Minfeng clean before letting go?
Upon hearing my words, Xiao Minxing's expression turned cold as he said, "Li Ru probably hates him to death and wants to completely crush him through this. But the most hopeless one is still him. Most of the Xiao family's assets have been moved away by Li Ru; what little he has left is just Father's old capital. Now he's feeling proud and insists on divorcing her without thinking about reclaiming what rightfully belongs to him while Li Ru hasn't divorced yet."
If Xiao Minfeng had this kind of strategy, Li Ru probably wouldn't have been able to take so much.
He’s likely even more afraid that once this woman comes back, he won't be able to hold onto even that little bit.
Xiao Minxing understood this better than I did; he knew what I was thinking without me saying it. He was probably angry, which is why he spoke more. Then he brought up the matter of the Xiao Residence again.
"Father's stance is that if she doesn't want a divorce, then don't get one. He wants me to step in and help Xiao Minfeng with this matter, trying to get back the money that has flowed away from Li Ru."
"How is that possible?" I looked at him and said.
He also smiled bitterly and said, "Yeah, how could it be possible? Not to mention that the money has already disappeared without a trace, even if we knew where it was now, since Li Ru could move it out safely, this matter wouldn't be solely her doing. It wouldn't be easy to get it back."
"What should we do now?"
For some reason, I had the illusion that Old Master Xiao regarded Xiao Minxing as a god, and a god who listened to him, an honest god who could take ruthless measures outside and accomplish anything, but would still obey him. Whenever something went wrong, he would push the mess onto him.
Xiao Minxing sat for a while and said, "Of course I won't care anymore. I don't have time to deal with them now; let them mess around."
I softly advised him that since he wasn't going to care about anything, there was no need to be angry over those few words. Fortunately, Father couldn't do anything to him; for now, he just needed to focus on handling his own matters.
Xiao Minxing sat in a daze for a while, his mouth opened as if he wanted to say something else to me, but his gaze shifted to my belly. In the end, he said, "Forget it; you shouldn't worry about this now. I can handle it. It's my fault for bringing negative emotions home."
I smiled back at him and said, "I'm your wife now; if you have something to say to me, I'll feel like we're in this together. If you really keep everything from me, then I would be unhappy. After all, we share the same bed; how can our hearts be different, right?"
Xiao Minxing looked at me with deep eyes that were dark as ink and unfathomable. Even though we were being honest with each other, seeing such a gaze made me feel a bit uneasy.
He quickly withdrew his gaze and softly said, "There are too many troubling things in the Xiao Family. Father has ordered me around since I was young; I rarely resisted. He thinks I'm afraid of him or for some other reason, but for me, those past events were intentional; the purpose was to train myself. However, this time when the Xiao Family is in trouble, I don't want to deal with it anymore."
Hearing this made me recall how things were when we returned last time. No wonder Old Master Xiao was furious; it turned out that Xiao Minxing wasn't listening to him like before and was trying to break free from his control. He was the only capable and obedient child who suddenly rebelled—how could he handle that?
Xiao Minxing leaned back against the chair and looked up at the ceiling as he said, "The Xiao Family is going to fail; no one can save it."
