I came out and told Xiao Minxing that I had rushed out of the house and only shouted to Sister Wang, who was chasing after me, "There's been an incident at my company. Please let Xiao Minxing know."
While driving, I called the fire department. After confirming the address, they said, "Someone has already reported the fire. Our team is on the way."
I drove as fast as I could, feeling extremely anxious; it was the first time I felt that my home was too far from the company.
Even from a distance, I could see thick smoke billowing and bright flames. The sound of sirens echoed throughout the night.
Fortunately, there weren't many people in this area. I parked my car a few dozen meters away from the company, but was stopped by police outside who said the road was closed due to the fire and I couldn't go in.
I urgently told them that I was the person in charge, and they asked me to show my identification.
In fact, all I had on me was my ID card, which didn’t really prove anything about being in charge. However, they didn’t seem too concerned; after looking at my ID, they said, "Everyone inside is doing their best to rescue. Miss Qiu going in now wouldn’t help; it’s better to wait here for updates."
Xiao Minxing's car approached from another street. As soon as he got out of the car, he grabbed my hand and said, "Stay calm; everything will be fine."
How could I stay calm? This company was Mina's hard work, and there were people inside. Not to mention the financial loss, if anyone got hurt, it would definitely be a serious matter.
The fire continued raging until around three or four in the morning before it gradually subsided. Thick smoke kept rising, and police officers came out one after another.
They had been busy all night and looked exhausted, many covered in soot.
Xiao Minxing calmed me down in the car and said, "Stay here and don’t move. I'm the boss here; if there's anything, they'll come to me. Just wait for my news."
After he left, I looked at the desolate street in front of me and the buildings in the distance that were blackened by smoke. I almost regretted not staying longer at the company yesterday.
Although I knew that this wouldn’t change anything and I had no idea what caused the fire, guilt made me feel particularly miserable.
I couldn’t sit still in the car. Seeing Xiao Minxing go ask the police officers who were coming out, I hurriedly got out to ask them as well.
From what they said, it seemed there were no casualties; only other company property was damaged. The fire started in the raw material storage area and burned most fiercely there; it seemed like there would be significant financial losses.
When I asked about the cause of the fire, one officer said, "We are still investigating, but based on the situation at the scene, it appears to be man-made."
I looked at him in shock, unsure of what to say for a moment.
Arson? Who could it be? Who hates me so much that they would burn down the company?
We were busy until dawn, and only then did the police leave. However, the company was temporarily sealed off. They confirmed that the cause was indeed arson. The surveillance footage showed someone climbing over the outer wall under the cover of darkness, avoiding the security at the entrance, and seemingly aware of the cameras inside, evading most of them.
The only footage we managed to capture was that moment of him climbing over the wall and his escape.
Taking advantage of the chaos after the fire, when both the security and people inside were in disarray, he exited through the front door but quickly disappeared into the darkness, even eluding the surveillance cameras around.
The police pointed at the person in the footage and asked me and Xiao Minxing, "Do you recognize this person?"
I had no impression at all. When I turned to Xiao Minxing, he shook his head as well.
However, he stared at the footage for a long time. Although his face showed no particular expression, his eyes were somewhat cold.
On our way back from the police station, he held my hand and said, "Since you've been tired lately, just rest at home for a while. I'll handle things from here."
I turned to him and asked, "Do you know who did it?"
He smiled and said, "If I knew, I would tell the police to catch them. Don't think about it too much; what's done is done, and it will eventually have a conclusion."
I couldn't relax at all and looked at him, asking, "So do you suspect anyone?"
Xiao Minxing shook his head and said, "The police will find a way. But since this was done intentionally, it might really be someone with a grudge against us. You should rest at home during this time. When you take Xiao Zhe out, try to go to crowded places and don't stay out too long. Also, I'll find some people to guard the house."
In one night, the city was on high alert.
When I returned home and told Sister Wang and Sister Liu about this incident, they were both startled and said they wouldn't take Xiao Zhe out to play anymore.
Although there are usually no outsiders in this villa area, since someone did this deliberately, they might try other methods. Setting a fire is a serious matter; they clearly don't care. If something else happens at our home later on, I can't even bear to think about it.
I agreed with Sister Liu's approach and looked at Xiao Zhe playing nearby. I said, "Alright then, you two should stay home for now. If we need to go out for anything, we'll go together."
The people Xiao Minxing mentioned arrived that noon. They added two more security personnel and installed surveillance cameras around the yard so that almost every corner within several dozen meters could be monitored.
But I still worried and called him, saying, "Don't work too late. I’m not at ease with you coming back alone."
He just laughed on the other end and said, "It's fine, don't worry. They just set a fire, and the police are catching them right now. If they act again, the risk will be very high; they should know that."
Hearing this, I couldn't help but ask, "Do you know who did it?"
Xiao Minxing replied, "You can't say things like that without evidence. Don't think too much about it."
He said not to think too much, but after Xiao Minxing left for work in the morning, I started feeling restless. Almost every half hour, I had to call him.
In the end, even he got a bit annoyed and said in a low voice, "Wife, can you please spare me? If you keep this up, I’ll be driven crazy by your calls before anything even happens."
I knew he was busy during the day with many things to handle and meetings to attend, especially with the issues at that company. After the fire, there would definitely be a lot of aftermath to deal with—deliveries for upper clients and payments for lower suppliers.
But these were all financial matters; no matter how big they were, no one was more important than safety. I still didn’t know who those people were, but if they dared to set a fire, who’s to say they wouldn’t kill?
On the third day after the incident, Mina called me and said she was coming back to Haicheng.
I immediately got anxious and hurriedly asked her if something happened with Longwen.
She softly replied from the other end, "No, we’re fine and have even set a wedding date. I heard from Su Qian that something happened on your side, so I'm coming back to check."
