After completing the two pastries, Xing Ruyi taught A-Ling how to make Three Red Nourishing Qi and Blood Soup. First, she rinsed the red beans and soaked them in warm water, then boiled them until the skins split open. She added red dates and Goji Berries, and after half an hour, she turned off the heat to let it simmer.
Once Shengzi finished his medicine, the Three Red Nourishing Qi and Blood Soup was ready. To allow this fated yet unfortunate couple to spend their last moments together warmly, Xing Ruyi risked being invaded by coldness and cast a spell to temporarily suppress A-Ling's chill, watching her carry the soup into Shengzi's room.
"Ah, I really don't know if what I'm doing is out of kindness or if I'm just making things worse," Xing Ruyi sighed with her hands clasped together as she saw the couple nestled together through the window. "Amitabha, may this pair of lovers be together in their next life."
When Pu Yi opened his eyes, he saw the fox's handsome face and cheerfully approached to greet him. "Are you here to see Shengzi too? Don't worry, I've taken care of everything. Once Shengzi finishes the soup, I'll take A-Ling away."
The fox stood still, his charming face darkened.
"Why the long face? Did some vixen dump you? Ouch! What are you doing? That hurts!" Before she could finish her sentence, Xing Ruyi realized her hands were tightly grasped by a fox that had transformed into human form. Then, without waiting for her to continue complaining, the usually graceful fox began to chatter incessantly like a monk reciting scriptures.
"Xing Ruyi, when will you learn to take care of yourself properly? Also, you are human, not a deity or a demon. All your abilities do not belong to you; do you know how dangerous it is to help an evil spirit dispel its yin energy recklessly? Furthermore, I didn't come here to see Shengzi; I came here to see you. No matter how many times I tell you, when I'm not around, don't step out of Ruyi Workshop casually. And let me reiterate: there are no vixens—none in the past, none now, and none in the future—only you. Do you understand?"
Xing Ruyi felt a slight sting in her nose and leaned her head against the fox's chest, murmuring softly, "What should I do, Fox? I really like how you nag at me. I'm so touched; I've realized that I've truly fallen for you. I really like you so much. Fox!"
The fox's charming face flushed with embarrassment, and he fell silent. Meanwhile, from three meters away came two awkward coughs. Turning around, Xing Ruyi saw Chang Tai holding a bowl of medicine and instantly blushed, gripping the fox's sleeve without saying anything further.
"Ahem, may I ask who this is?" Even Chang Constable, who had seen many things in his life, found himself tongue-tied at such an embarrassing scene with a remarkably handsome man standing opposite him.
"Yin Chensi, guardian of the Fox Demon," the fox introduced himself confidently while tightly wrapping his arm around Xing Ruyi possessively.
Seeing that gesture from him made Chang Tai feel a bit disappointed but he responded graciously nonetheless: "Chang Tai, serving at Yamen."
Xing Ruyi secretly scratched the crook of the fox's arm and asked, "What do you mean by my guardian?"
"That's the person who stays to take care of you!" The fox lowered his head and smiled gently. Accompanied by that mischievous gaze, it made one's heart race, causing Xing Ruyi, who initially wanted to make more moves, to shyly lower her head.
Chang Tai was a straightforward man. When it came to matters of the heart, he often kept them to himself and was not good with words, as seen in his relationship with Yanniang. At this moment, seeing the two interact intimately and hearing such blunt words made him feel even more awkward. He stood there, unsure whether to stay or leave. When he saw Xing Ruyi nestling like a bird in Yin Chensi's arms, he felt an inexplicable sense of loss, and his hand holding the medicine bowl involuntarily stiffened.
Fortunately, this awkwardness did not last long; however, Xing Ruyi's next words nearly caused him to drop the bowl.
"Brother Chang, let me formally introduce you. This is Yin Chensi, but I call him Fox because he is as cunning and rogue as that white tiger in my Ruyi Workshop. You know, the all-white fox you’ve seen. Also, don’t listen to him; he’s not my guardian. At most, he can only be considered a roommate!"
It was this last sentence that shocked Chang Tai so much that he almost dropped the bowl, and his face instantly changed color.
"Fox Demon, what do you mean?"
"What do I mean?" Xing Ruyi blinked innocently. "I just call him Yin Chensi."
"Not that." Chang Tai steadied himself. "I mean your last sentence—saying that you two can only be considered roommates. Fox Demon, do you know what a roommate means?"
"I know." Xing Ruyi nodded like a good child. "It means eating together, living together, and playing together."
"Then..." Chang Tai asked seriously, "Do you know him well?"
"Know him? What kind of situation counts as knowing someone well?" Xing Ruyi propped her chin on her hand, blinking her eyes at Chang Tai. "If my fox is the one I've spent the most time with in this world and have interacted with the longest, does that count as knowing him well?"
"If it's really like you said, then I understand." Chang Tai forced a smile, "I didn't mean to pry into your life. It's just that you called me Brother Chang and since you have no relatives in Luoyang City, I thought I would ask a few more questions."
"I know." Xing Ruyi smiled sweetly and pushed the fox's arm away from around her, "That's why I acknowledge you as my big brother."
With that simple 'so', Chang Tai's empty heart was instantly filled again, while the fox let out a light hum as a response to Xing Ruyi's earlier words.
Meanwhile, the three of them were lost in their own thoughts, A-Ling had already finished feeding Shengzi the soup and was now standing at the door of the side room with red-rimmed eyes, seemingly trying hard to hold back her tears.
"Tsk tsk, such a weak Shengzi actually drank all the soup so cleanly. It truly is a year of tigers and wolves," Xing Ruyi remarked, staring at the empty soup bowl in A-Ling's hands. Suddenly, she was lightly tapped on the forehead by the fox.
"With no education, you should read more books. The year of tigers and wolves is not meant to be used here," the fox said. Afterward, he bit his teeth in frustration, but his handsome face made that gesture look cute rather than intimidating.
Xing Ruyi stuck her tongue out at the fox and took A-Ling's hand. "I will help you fulfill your promise. Now that your wish has been granted, are you willing to come back with me?"
