A-Ling nodded, "I will go say goodbye to Consort Sheng and also let her know where the Taihe Cake and Poria Cake are placed. Since Consort Sheng cannot see, I must make it clear to her so that she won't get hurt."
As she passed by Chang Tai, A-Ling bowed in gratitude, "Thank you, Brother Chang, for taking care of me. I also hope you can visit the Sheng Family more often to help look after Brother Sheng and Consort Sheng."
"A-Ling, what are you doing? Please get up."
"Brother Chang has been kind to A-Ling, and you have looked after me these days, so I should thank you. However, A-Ling has nothing to offer in return except this word of thanks." A-Ling then looked at Xing Ruyi and said, "Ruyi is very familiar with Chang'an. I have asked her to take me home on a chosen day. In the future, I may not have the chance to meet with you, Brother Chang, Brother Sheng, and Consort Sheng."
"Your home is in Chang'an?" Upon hearing that A-Ling's home was in Chang'an, Chang Tai reacted similarly to how Xing Ruyi had initially. Given A-Ling's age and that she was alone, it was hard to imagine how she had traveled from Chang'an to Luoyang. Did she perhaps come with the empress during the relocation? Although he had some questions in his mind, he only thought about it briefly and did not ask further; he just instructed A-Ling to take care on her journey.
When Xing Ruyi went to the Sheng Family, she was alone. But on her way back, not only did she have a handsome fox by her side, but also a cute girl in red. Unfortunately, ever since they left the gates of the Sheng Family, A-Ling had concealed herself and hidden in Xing Ruyi's shadow, following her steps. The fox was even more persistent; it refused to tire until it transformed back into its fox form and naturally let Xing Ruyi carry it.
Ah, what a wasted opportunity for attention! Otherwise, just having a handsome man and a beautiful woman on either side along with a white and red super combination would have been a living advertisement for Ruyi Workshop. What a pity!
In the middle of the night, Xing Ruyi was awakened by a strange crying sound. Rubbing her eyes and sitting up, she realized that the windowsill was empty and that the fox that had been guarding it was nowhere to be found. In the yard, a cool breeze blew gently as a bright moon with a reddish edge hung lazily among the branches. Upon closer inspection, there seemed to be something cat-like lying in the middle of that moon.
"Could this be the legendary fox worshipping the moon?" Xing Ruyi rubbed her chin and randomly grabbed an outer garment before walking barefoot to the window. As she got closer, she noticed that A-Ling was also standing in the yard looking up at the moon.
"Ah! It's not a fox!" After taking a closer look, she realized that what lay in the middle of the moon was neither a fox nor a cat but rather a child. "How rare! There’s actually a child lying on the moon. Could it be that Chang'e and Wu Gang have an illegitimate child?"
"Pfft!" A-Ling laughed out loud.
"What are you laughing at?" Xing Ruyi wrinkled her nose. "Aside from Chang'e and Wu Gang, who else do you know lives on the moon? If there’s suddenly a child appearing out of nowhere, one naturally has to guess it's from their family! Could it be that Chang'e came to the moon while pregnant? Is this child Hou Yi's? Tsk tsk! If it really is Hou Yi's child, then that's unfortunate; it's already the Golden Age of the Tang Dynasty. Who knows how many times Hou Yi has reincarnated since then? Does he even remember Chang'e stealing the elixir and running to the moon?"
“Ruyi, this idea is quite peculiar.” A-Ling continued to cover her mouth while smiling, though not as vigorously as before.
Xing Ruyi let out a light sigh and ignored A-Ling, reciting a poem: “The mica screen casts deep shadows, the long river gradually falls with the morning stars. Chang'e must regret stealing the Elixir, for the azure sea and night are filled with longing.”
“Chang'e must regret stealing the Elixir, for the azure sea and night are filled with longing.” A-Ling repeated softly, then shook her head gently: “If I were Chang'e, I definitely wouldn’t steal any Elixir. What good is the Moon Palace or immortality if I cannot be with the one I love? Even if I had the most splendid palace and the longest life, it would still be cold and lonely.”
“Thumbs up to you!” Xing Ruyi gestured to A-Ling. Naturally, A-Ling didn’t understand what Xing Ruyi meant by giving a thumbs up; she simply smiled shyly and continued to gaze at the moon: “That isn’t Chang'e’s child; it’s an Infant Soul.”
“Infant Soul?” Xing Ruyi blinked rapidly: “What is an Infant Soul, a ghost of an infant?”
“Yeah.” A-Ling nodded: “From its appearance, it looks like it was just born. I just don’t know which parents could be so cruel as to offer their newborn child for a Moon Sacrifice.”
“Moon Sacrifice?” Xing Ruyi pointed at the moon above them.
“Actually, I heard this from others. The soul that is sacrificed to the moon will be imprisoned there for eternity. Moreover, a soul is not human; it does not age or die, so this kind of imprisonment is almost eternal. Ruyi, is there really a Chang'e on that moon?” A-Ling gazed intently at Xing Ruyi: “If there is, then this child's soul would not be so lonely.”
Xing Ruyi felt a pang in her heart. She wasn’t sure if there was a Chang'e on the moon of Tang Dynasty, but in her time, there was no Chang'e on the moon. Perhaps due to deteriorating conditions on the moon, Chang'e and Wu Gang along with the Jade Rabbit had moved away. Nevertheless, upon hearing that A-Ling mentioned this child's soul would be eternally imprisoned on the moon, her heart ached fiercely.
Just like A-Ling, what kind of cruel parents would sacrifice their own child's soul for a Moon Sacrifice? If it were a child who passed away young, their parents would likely be too heartbroken to commit such an act. But if it were a living child, then it would be something that enraged both gods and humans alike; those cruel parents must be skinned alive.
“A-Ling, can you be sure this child was sacrificed by its own biological parents?” Xing Ruyi clutched her clothing at her chest and looked up at the thin shadow in the middle of the moon.
“I’m not sure, but I’ve heard that only with the heart's blood of biological parents can one perform a Moon Sacrifice. It seems that even if this child's parents did not intend to do so, they must have been aware.”
"Is there a method to save him?" Xing Ruyi glanced at the child again before looking away.
"I don't know, but since there is a Moon Sacrifice, there must be a way to break the method," A-Ling said as she lowered her head. She was likely reminded of her own experience in the forest. Her soul had been wandering, unable to escape that forest, perhaps trapped there by someone's spell. It was only through the accidental intrusion of Chang Tai and Shengzi that a spell was broken, allowing A-Ling to return to the Sheng Family with Shengzi, and she had even become a female ghost with some cultivation.
