Su Guangcai wore a sinister smile as he plunged the blood-stained butcher's knife, the very knife that Lingxiang hesitated to stab into him, into Lingxiang's back.
Lingxiang turned to look at Su Guangcai, her gaze filled with both understanding and confusion. Ultimately, she managed a faint smile, suppressing the surprise in her eyes, which dimmed as she looked down.
"Su Guangcai, you’ve gone mad! Lingxiang couldn’t bear to kill you, yet you can harden your heart to hurt her!"
Xing Ruyi angrily pushed Su Guangcai away. The man who had just appeared menacing now looked pitiful and self-righteous. He pointed at Lingxiang, accusing her of various crimes, ultimately concluding that he was a human while Lingxiang was a monster; humans and monsters could not coexist, so he had no choice but to uphold justice against his own kin!
"My lord, you are the Constable of the Yamen, right? Please, quickly capture this monster! Otherwise, she will stay in the Inn and harm more people. I saw her turn the Liu Family into a donkey and then kill them; she is a murderer! Oh, and me too—I was turned into a donkey by her. My lord, you have no idea what my life has been like these past years. This cruel monster feeds me nothing but low-quality fodder. My lord, I am a human! I am not a donkey; how can she treat me this way?"
Su Guangcai cried with snot and tears, but Xing Ruyi remained unmoved by his plight. Chang Tai was too upright to look favorably upon such a man and would not waste his sympathy on someone like him.
After crying for a while without anyone responding, Su Guangcai continued to ramble while covering his wound, quietly attempting to move toward the door step by step. He was clever enough to realize that even if he couldn't escape himself, he could grab hold of the person at the door for help. That person was none other than the fox who had just come down from the second floor after hearing the commotion.
With just one glance, Su Guangcai recognized that the fox was with Xing Ruyi and Chang Tai. Especially since the moment he descended from the second floor, the fox's gaze had been fixed on Xing Ruyi. Moreover, when he came down earlier, he had clearly heard their conversation and knew that Lingxiang was a monster; yet there was no sign of fear on the fox's face—he seemed even calmer than Lord Chang from the Yamen.
In this world, there are only three types of people who are not afraid of monsters!
The first type knows monsters personally; they are friends with them and naturally do not fear being harmed. The second type consists of monster hunters. These individuals not only do not fear monsters but may even feel excitement upon seeing one. The third type is fools—fools are too naive to understand the dangers posed by monsters.
Xing Ruyi and the fox were clearly neither of the first nor third types; thus Su Guangcai speculated they belonged to the second type because even when he was still a donkey, he had heard Lingxiang’s strange words.
Just as Su Guangcai plotted against the Fox Demon and cautiously moved closer to it step by step, a massive green claw suddenly appeared before him. Upon closer inspection, it seemed not to be a claw but rather some kind of animal's foot.
"Wow! What a huge spider! So this is Lingxiang's true form!"
"Xing Ruyi" exclaimed exaggeratedly, while the fox had already teleported behind her as soon as "Lingxiang" revealed her true form, timely supporting her against the demonic wind that came with "Lingxiang's" transformation.
After the demonic wind passed, time paused in all places except the kitchen. It seemed that "Lingxiang" did not want others to know her true identity, even in her anger, she still maintained the rationality expected of a demon.
"Chang Tai" was also swept by the demonic wind, but thanks to his years of training, he managed to stay grounded; he was just slightly annoyed that he couldn't protect "Xing Ruyi" in time.
"This is 'Lingxiang'?" "Chang Tai" said as he moved closer to the fox, apologetically glancing at him, "I'm sorry, I couldn't protect 'Fox Demon' just now."
"From 'Lingxiang's' physique, it seems her cultivation has been at least over eight hundred years. It is already impressive that you could withstand the demonic wind on your own; it's normal that you couldn't protect 'Fox Demon.' Besides, I'm here too."
"Brother Chang, don't worry about it. Look at me, I'm fine now!" "Xing Ruyi" moved a bit closer to "Lingxiang," posing for a selfie. "What a pity I didn't bring my broken rice with me; otherwise, we could take a picture together as a keepsake."
Thinking of taking a photo, "Xing Ruyi" slyly glanced at the fox. "Um, Lord Fox, it seems your painting skills are quite good too. Could you help me capture this scene? You know, just like it is right now; I really think it's super cool."
In front was a cunning-looking, lively girl dressed in splendid attire from the "Golden Tang Dynasty," and behind was a large blue spider. The fox couldn't see what was so cool about this scene. However, since it was a request from "Fox Demon," even though he couldn't find any beauty in it himself, he nodded.
"Xing Ruyi" happily jumped next to "Chang Tai." "Did you see? 'Lingxiang' had no intention of hurting me at all, so Brother Chang, you don't need to blame yourself. Besides, who am I? I'm the renowned shopkeeper of 'Ruyi Rouge' in 'Divine Capital Luoyang.' How could I be easily blown down by a gust of wind? I'm not that weak!"
"Chang Tai Xin" smiled reassuringly but still stood in front of "Fox Demon," fearing that "Lingxiang," who had already transformed into a large spider, might accidentally harm "Xing Ruyi."
"Lingxiang" turned back to glance at "Xing Ruyi," feeling somewhat apologetic for her sudden transformation. Fortunately, nothing happened to the "Fox Demon," so she could focus on resolving her feelings with Su Guangcai.
The spider legs blocked Su Guangcai's path; he trembled in fear from this sudden change and helplessly fell to the ground, looking pale at the creature with a human head and spider body before him.
"Husband! I call you one last time—Husband! Do you know why I was unwilling to kill you back then?"
"Because... because you want to keep me to make money?"
"Make money?" Lingxiang smiled. "You see, I am a demon, not a human. Only humans are obsessed with money, thinking it is the best thing in the world. The reason I didn't kill you back then was that I still held onto a glimmer of hope. I thought that if I gave you time to think it through, you would come back to me, and we could live like we did in the past.
In truth, I know that our good days together won't last long. I am a demon; I will die, but I will not grow old. You are human, so I wanted to give you more time and spend more time with you."
"I do like you. If I didn't like you, I wouldn't have helped you redeem yourself back then, would I?" Su Guangcai caught a hint of hope from Lingxiang's words and slowly backed away, trying to distance himself from her spider legs as much as possible.
"My relationship with Liu Family was also a momentary lapse; I was deceived by her. The reason I acted against you was because I believed her instigation. Lingxiang, I do have feelings for you; you can sense that too, right? But you are a demon and I am human; we are fundamentally different. No matter how much I like you, it cannot be forced, can it?
At the Foot of the Mountain, when I watched you turn Liu Family into a donkey, I was terrified. So you can't blame me for that. If I hadn't killed you, you would have killed me, just like now."
"I never intended to kill you. Even when turning you into a donkey, I never thought of selling you. Because I couldn't bear to see you being eaten by others or suffering at someone's home. But in the end, you hurt my heart!"
Lingxiang raised one of her spider legs and was about to stomp down on Su Guangcai.
"You can't kill me; killing someone requires paying with your life. Even if you're a demon, you'll still have to pay with your life. By the way, there are Yamen Officials here. If you kill me in front of them and the Government Office investigates, they won't escape responsibility either!"
Su Guangcai's mind was quick; with just a few words, he dragged Xing Ruyi and the others into the situation while trying to take advantage of Lingxiang's moment of hesitation to escape from under her spider leg. Seeing this, Lingxiang frowned and spat out a strand of spider silk that tightly wrapped around Su Guangcai, ultimately binding him to a nearby pillar.
"He’s right; killing is against the law. Even as a demon, randomly killing someone will bring trouble from Old Man and hinder future cultivation." Xing Ruyi said cheerfully as he walked leisurely past Lingxiang's spider body and approached Su Guangcai with his hands behind his back. "Killing is illegal, but killing a donkey isn't against the law, especially since Dragon Gate Inn is registered with the Government Office and is permitted to slaughter cattle, sheep, pigs, donkeys, and other livestock."
"You’re talking nonsense! This is my Inn; how could I not know that this Inn is registered with the Government Office?"
"Brother Chang, is Dragon Gate Inn registered with the County Magistrate?" Xing Ruyi deliberately raised his voice to ask.
Chang Tai understood and replied loudly, "If there is a backup plan, even if there isn't, there will be one later."
"You heard that, Dragon Gate Inn can kill a donkey," Xing Ruyi winked at Su Guangcai. "By the way, besides donkey tendon, I also love a dish called Donkey Meat stew. It's actually made with meat broth mixed with minced meat and starch, steamed into a jelly-like meat cake. This dish is also known as stewed fox. You can cut it up and dip it in garlic sauce or cook it with green onions; it's definitely a great accompaniment for drinks. Unfortunately, in the Golden Tang Dynasty, many places don't serve Donkey Meat or this kind of donkey stew. Today, I'm quite lucky to encounter a good donkey; I'll just have to kill it later to make some donkey stew."
"You—" Su Guangcai looked at Xing Ruyi with disbelief.
"What about me? I, Xing Ruyi, hate people like you the most! What's wrong with monsters? What's wrong with Spider Demon? Who says that humans and monsters can't fall in love? If you don't like someone, if you can't give them a lifetime promise, then don't provoke them casually! Redeeming someone? Bah! If Lingxiang really wanted freedom, would she need your help to redeem herself? Besides, having someone like you help her redeem herself is worse than letting her stay in the Brothel, where she might meet someone who truly cares for her and doesn't mind that she's a monster."
"Who would be with a monster? It's easy for you to say; if it were you, would you be willing?" Su Guangcai shouted.
"You are not me; how do you know I wouldn't be willing!" Xing Ruyi moved a little closer. "Also, I want to tell you a secret!"
"What is it?"
"The secret is that I can also turn people into donkeys!" Xing Ruyi said as she gently patted Su Guangcai on the shoulder.
This seemingly light touch actually used some ghostly transformation technique: "Su Guangcai, honestly, I think being a donkey suits you better than being human; at least as a donkey, you're not useless and annoying!"
This was the last thing Su Guangcai ever heard in his life. As soon as the words fell and her hand moved, Su Guangcai transformed back into a donkey, braying loudly in place.
