Yun Zhu recalled the terrifying Nightmare and hurriedly touched her face, fear evident in her eyes. "Look at me, is my face alright?"
The maid was affected by the fear in Yun Zhu's eyes and couldn't help but swallow hard. She raised her head and carefully examined Yun Zhu's face.
"Madam's face is exceptionally beautiful, even more so than before, with no other changes. I don't understand what you are worried about."
"Is there really nothing wrong?" Yun Zhu asked again, feeling an inexplicable chill creeping up her back. "I just had a dream, and it was so frightening!"
"It's just a Nightmare; I often have them too."
As the maid comforted Yun Zhu, she picked up the Copper Mirror that Yun Zhu had knocked to the ground earlier and silently handed it to her.
Yun Zhu leaned closer to the mirror. Fortunately, her reflection looked perfectly normal, aside from the lingering fear in her eyes; there were no other changes.
Yun Zhu let out a sigh of relief, half leaning against the bed, one hand on her forehead, and said softly, "Today at Xing, you heard what Shopkeeper Xing said. You are my personal maid and someone I brought from the Yun Family. I never hide anything from you, and I trust that you will never betray me in this lifetime."
"I entered the Yun Family at three years old and have always been by your side; everything must come first for you," the maid said, lowering her head. "Your matters are my matters."
"Good!"
Yun Zhu lifted her eyelids and focused on the maid's lovely face. Looking at that face, Yun Zhu felt a strange sense of unfamiliarity. Upon reflection, this maid had been by her side for over ten years, yet she had never truly looked at her closely. Now that she did, she realized that the maid was indeed quite attractive.
Yun Zhu furrowed her brows and suddenly remembered that on the day she married her husband, although he sat across from her, his gaze seemed to drift towards someone behind her.
Unfortunately, she hadn't realized it then; thinking that her husband was a scholar who might be shy on their wedding night was why he didn't dare to look closely at her. It wasn't until tonight when she clearly saw the maid's face that she finally understood—her husband had frequently glanced behind her because he probably thought that her accompanying maid looked better than she did.
Yun Zhu felt a surge of annoyance within her. If it were in the past, she would have probably jumped up and torn the maid's face apart after realizing these things. But now... she touched her own face and quietly suppressed the annoyance that had just arisen in her heart.
"Madam?"
Seeing Yun Zhu silent for a while, the maid tilted her head and secretly glanced at her. Just then, Yun Zhu's annoyance had not completely faded, which made the maid feel uneasy, yet she did not dare to ask directly.
"It's nothing, I just suddenly thought of some unhappy things." Yun Zhu rubbed her forehead, closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again. "Do you have any thoughts on the matter with Manager Xing?"
"This..."
The maid assessed Yun Zhu's expression, unsure whether she should answer that question or how to respond in a way that would satisfy Yun Zhu.
"I just said that you're one of us, so I want to hear your opinion." Yun Zhu stood up and walked to face the maid, looking directly into her eyes. "You know my feelings for my husband; do you think I should go through with that matter?"
"Madam!" The maid trembled slightly all over and quickly knelt down. "I know these words should never be spoken, but from my perspective, I absolutely do not wish for you to take any risks."
"What do you mean by that?"
"The abilities of the manager of the Ruyi Rouge shop are unknown to me, but I have heard some of her conversations with you. Just hearing a few sentences made me feel alarmed—things about the liver, heart, and lungs; just thinking about it frightens me."
Yun Zhu furrowed her brows as she looked at the box of ointment in her hand. "That manager of the Rouge shop indeed possesses some skills that common people do not have. Just this box of ointment is enough to amaze everyone and make all women flock to it. Yet this miraculous ointment is something she keeps hidden. If it weren't for my cousin Yun Xi being an old acquaintance of hers and introducing me, I fear I would never be able to obtain such a wondrous ointment."
"I'm not doubting the manager's abilities; it's just that what I've heard sounds terrifying. If it comes to actually doing it..." The maid shook her head several times. "Forgive me for my incompetence; I truly cannot imagine what that Manager Xing would do."
"Not only can you not imagine it, but even I cannot." Yun Zhu gazed out the window with a sense of melancholy. "However, I neither want to give up nor miss out. You should know how difficult this journey has been for me; now that I've finally seen a glimmer of hope, if I'm asked to give up at this moment, I would truly be unwilling."
Yun Zhu touched her face and thought, "Perhaps Master pities my infatuation and has sent the Shopkeeper of Ruyi Cosmetic Shop to me, giving me this miraculous ointment and hope."
The woman, the one who had stolen her husband's heart, was about to enter. This time, she could not stop it, and neither could the Yun Family behind her. Shopkeeper Xing had said that her time was running out.
"But Madam..." the maid cautiously asked, "do you really think it's worth taking such a risk for Master?"
Yun Zhu glanced at her maid but remained silent.
"Madam, think about it. If Shopkeeper Xing's method works, that would be great. But what if it doesn't? What if something happens to you? Wouldn't that just benefit Master and the woman who is about to enter?"
"What should I do then? Should I really just turn a blind eye and let my husband marry that woman, watching them be affectionate with each other?" Yun Zhu retorted to her maid. "No! I can't do that! If that's the case, I would go mad. Rather than doing nothing, I would prefer to try Shopkeeper Xing's method. If it fails, then it’s just that Heaven has not favored me."
"Madam!" The maid called out softly to Yun Zhu. "I do have an idea, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate."
"Let's hear it."
A glimmer of light appeared in Yun Zhu's eyes. Since this idea came from her own maid, she felt no need to hide her eagerness.
The maid approached Yun Zhu and whispered a few words in her ear. Yun Zhu hesitated for a moment before asking, "Do you think it's feasible?"
"I don't know for sure, but I think we can give it a try. If it succeeds, everything will be fine. If it doesn't work out, we won't lose much either. Of course, these are just my thoughts; if Madam thinks it's inappropriate, just consider it as if I never said anything."
Yun Zhu pondered for a moment and replied, "Your method could indeed be worth trying. If it works out well, that's great; if not, it's no big deal. After all, neither of us will lose much. However, this matter must be handled by someone reliable; we cannot let any word of it leak."
"Rest assured! The Yun Family has arranged for people on Master’s side; this task can be entrusted to them."
"Go and make arrangements! Remember, be cautious, very cautious! Keep your heart in mind!" Yun Zhu waved her hand. "Report back to me tomorrow morning with the results of this arrangement."
The maid responded softly and left.
Yun Zhu lay with her eyes open for a while, then fell into a deep sleep. This time, she was not plagued by nightmares but instead had a pleasant dream.
In the dream, a man reached out and touched her face. "It has been a few days since we last met, and you have become even more beautiful!"
Yun Zhu shyly looked at her man. "Is that truly your sincere opinion, my husband?"
"Of course it is sincere!" The man's gaze lingered on her face with longing. "In truth, I am a very devoted man. The one I have always admired in my heart is you. Those women outside are merely fleeting distractions!"
"Is it really just a fleeting distraction?"
Although a hint of joy flickered in Yun Zhu's eyes, she remained clear-headed, holding onto a thread of rationality even in her dream.
"If it is just a fleeting distraction, why do you spend more time with those women than with me? And why do you always seem unwilling to look at my face? Do you think I am ugly and unworthy of your attention, that even allowing you to look at me is a burden?"
The man was taken aback. "What are you saying? Your beauty is rare to find; if you consider yourself ugly, then I truly do not know what other woman in this world could be called beautiful."
"Do you really think so?" Yun Zhu said as she nestled into the man's embrace.
On the bed, Yun Zhu turned over. Perhaps the scene in her dream was too beautiful, causing her to smile in reality as well, and she let out soft sounds in tune with the enchanting dream.
But in the dream, just as the man leaned over her and was about to become intimately entwined with her, this beautiful dream suddenly transformed into an endless nightmare.
The man said, "The woman I deeply loved has died, and it was you who caused her death. Look, that is her soul; she is standing there, looking into my eyes and at your body.
She wants to be revived, to be with me again, so I need to use human oil to create a new body for her. I was so close, just a little bit more, and I would have succeeded. Do you know what that little bit is?"
He leaned down and bit Yun Zhu's ear. "I just need your oil, the human oil extracted from you. Do you know how magical that stuff is?"
"Why?" Yun Zhu looked up at the man pressing down on her, the husband she deeply loved. "Why does it have to be my oil? No! I don't have any oil; there's no human oil on me!"
"You do! The ointment you used contains human oil!"
The man suddenly produced a knife from somewhere and stabbed it fiercely into Yun Zhu's body. He laughed, "Look, so much human oil! Now you should believe me, right?"
Yun Zhu saw it!
She saw that what was flowing out of her body was not blood but a yellowish, greasy substance that made one feel nauseous just by looking at it.
"What has happened to me? What is happening to me?"
The man replied, "Don't you remember? You used an ointment that contained human oil. Although that ointment made you beautiful, it also transformed your body into what it is now. Soon, you will become part of the medicine and then become part of her. Don’t worry; I will love you just as I loved her."
As he spoke, he pointed toward the window. Yun Zhu saw the woman floating in mid-air; it was the girl who had been killed by those she had instructed!
