Yun Zhu looked at the White-Clad Maiden floating in mid-air, letting out a fearful whimper from her throat. The sound was strange, like someone had choked her, making it hard to breathe.
She watched as the White Shadow drifted toward her, her eyes widening in circles, growing wider until a flash of white exploded from her vision. She suddenly let out a sharp scream and woke up from the Nightmare.
Breathe, deep breath!
Gasping, breathe hard!
Yun Zhu looked at the faint light before her; she knew it was sunlight shining through the window and into the Bedroom. She also realized that what she had just experienced was merely a Nightmare. However, this Nightmare was so bizarre that it sent chills down her spine, prompting her to instinctively reach for the box of Ointment and throw it to the ground.
“Gurgle…”
The Ointment rolled from beside the bed to the center of the Bedroom, its box illuminated by sunlight, emitting a faint blue glow.
Yun Zhu stared at that beam of light, feeling as if two voices were arguing in her mind. One voice said, “Good throw! This harmful thing shouldn’t be kept.” The other voice countered, “What a good item! It would be a shame to throw it away. Men conquer the world to win women, while women must conquer men to win the world. But what is most important for a woman to conquer a man? It’s her appearance!”
Yun Zhu instinctively touched her face.
The first voice in her mind seemed to sense danger and hurriedly argued back, “A woman’s appearance is indeed important, but if it costs her life for beauty, then it’s not worth it!”
“To live a life worth living is essential. Think about it carefully; since childhood, how much suffering have you endured because your appearance didn’t measure up to others? Whether in the Yun Family or in your husband’s family.”
“Now think about how much has changed since you used this Ointment. Those who once ignored you, those who didn’t care about your presence—have they not begun to pay attention to you?”
“Consider your husband—the one who wouldn’t spare you a glance since you entered his home. Has he not started to look at you differently? Though he hasn’t yet become as affectionate as you hoped, at least he is willing to look at you now; he is willing to focus on your face.”
Yun Zhu recalled the first time she met her husband after changing her appearance. That time, his attitude remained as cold as before, but just as that voice in her mind had said, his gaze began to linger on her face. She even sensed a hint of astonishment in his eyes.
The voice in her head suggested that if she were still alive as she once was, it would be better to die now.
Yun Zhu stood up and walked toward the discarded box of Ointment. The first voice in her mind tried to persuade her, but she forcefully pushed it aside.
"Shut up!" Yun Zhu shouted into the air, "I don't want to hear you anymore. You are not me; you don't know how painful it is to have an ordinary face in a family like this."
The first voice in her mind vanished, and Yun Zhu heard another voice laughing softly, a victorious and joyful laugh.
Yun Zhu picked up the box of Ointment. Although the box had been exposed to sunlight, it still felt chillingly cool to the touch.
"Madam!" A maid gently knocked twice on the door. "Madam, are you awake?"
Yun Zhu held the Ointment in her palm, stood up, brushed aside the loose strands of hair that had fallen on her forehead, and sat back down on the bed.
"Come in!"
With a creak, the door slowly opened, and the maid entered with her head bowed. Once inside, she did not look up but immediately said, "Regarding that matter, I have already given instructions. They are all elderly people raised by our Yun Family and specifically assigned by Master to be by your side. They will handle things properly without any accidents."
"Even so, we should still be cautious. You are my person; there are some matters I cannot handle directly, so I need you to keep an eye on them for me."
"Rest assured, Madam. There is no need for you to give further instructions; I will take care of these matters."
Yun Zhu lightly acknowledged with an "mm," looking at the maid's beautiful face and saying, "I vaguely remember that you were sold to my household after your parents fell into misfortune. If there were any close relatives at home, they would have found you by now."
"When I entered the household, I was still young and have forgotten about my family matters. If there were still relatives at home, they wouldn't have taken so many years without coming to look for me." The maid raised her eyes to look at Yun Zhu and then knelt down. "Regardless of whether I have other relatives or not, it no longer matters to me. I have signed a Contract of Servitude with the Yun Family; from now on, whether I live or die, I am a person of the Yun Family and yours, Madam."
"Your loyalty, I am aware of it." Yun Zhu stood up and walked over to the maid, helping her to her feet. She tried to speak in a more familiar tone, "Since you are by my side, as your mistress, I must consider you as well. If I remember correctly, after the New Year, you will turn twenty. It is also my selfishness; apart from you, there is no one else I can trust, which is why I have kept you around until now. Once this matter is settled, I will take it upon myself to find you a good match."
"Madam—" The maid's eyes showed a hint of fear, and her knees buckled as she almost knelt down again. "I do not wish to marry! I only want to follow you for the rest of my life! I have never thought about getting married!"
"Look at how frightened you are... You are such a sincere girl."
Yun Zhu understood what the maid was afraid of because she knew what she had been like in the past.
Thinking of this, Yun Zhu wiped the smile off her face. She squatted down and looked directly at her maid for the first time.
"Madam, you..."
"I know what you're afraid of, but times have changed. After everything that has happened, I no longer see you just as my personal maid; I see you as my confidante and sister.
If I am going to help you find a good match, I will never introduce you to those chaotic people, nor will I casually betroth you to some servant.
Look into my eyes; I, Yun Zhu, swear here that I will continue to trust and rely on you for the rest of my life, and I will also be your trust and reliance."
"Madam!" The maid bowed deeply. "I cannot accept such kindness from you!"
"Do you not trust me?"
Yun Zhu's eyes darkened, and her voice became colder than before.
"No! I trust you completely! I just feel unworthy of such treatment from you." The maid quickly shook her head and then bowed her head to the ground. "I swear here that I will never betray your trust. I am willing to do anything for you!"
"With your words, I can rest assured!" Yun Zhu nodded in satisfaction and pulled the maid up again. "Don't worry, since I've promised you, I won't go back on my word. Once everything is settled, not only will I arrange a good marriage for you, but I will also return your contract of servitude."
The maid's eyes suddenly brightened.
"Now you should believe me, right?" Yun Zhu asked the maid with a smile. "I will take care of your marriage, but whether or not you want to marry is ultimately up to you."
"Thank you, Madam!"
The maid knelt down again, but this time it was sincere. Yun Zhu squinted her eyes slightly, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth!
"Go! Take care of what I've instructed you." As Yun Zhu spoke, she walked towards the couch. "You and I are both waiting for this matter to be resolved."
The maid nodded and half-bowed as she retreated. However, unlike before, her expression was determined and somewhat joyful.
In the Ruyi Rouge shop, Xing Ruyi sneezed. She turned her head to look at the fox beside her and squinted her eyes, asking, "Could it be that you're thinking about me?"
The fox also squinted its eyes and then shook its head. "If you had asked me a moment ago, I would have said yes! But just now, all I was thinking about were these herbs."
Xing Ruyi rubbed her nose. "That's strange; why did I suddenly sneeze out of nowhere? If it wasn't someone thinking about me, then I'm probably catching a cold."
"Let me take a look." The fox reached out a hand and placed it on Xing Ruyi's fair wrist. "Your pulse is strong and vigorous; it doesn't seem like you're about to get sick. It looks more like you've been well taken care of by Deer Lady lately and might be showing signs of gaining weight due to excess nourishment. But being a bit plump is good; here in the Golden Tang Dynasty, slender figures aren't in vogue; instead, a fuller figure is more appealing."
"Aren't you afraid I'll turn into a fat person?"
Xing Ruyi puffed out her cheeks to make her face look slightly rounder and fuller.
The fox looked at her and found her even more interesting and adorable. He poked her chubby cheek with his index finger and said, "In this way, you really look like a cute bun!"
Xing Ruyi could have held it together a bit longer, but upon hearing the fox's words, she completely lost her composure. She burst into laughter and replied, "If I really turned out like this, you probably wouldn't find me cute anymore. Just the fact that you have to use magic to make me invisible is much more effort than when I was slimmer."
The fox pretended to think seriously for a moment, then gestured in the air a few times and nodded, "That's true. If you really got fat, not only would it be hard to use magic to make you invisible, but I might not even be able to carry you."
"Stinky Fox, do you really think so?"
Xing Ruyi pretended to hit the fox, but he stood firm, showing no intention of dodging.
Seeing this, Xing Ruyi lost interest in hitting him. She pouted and said, "If I do get fat in the future, you better not dislike me. After all, right now you're the one crying and begging to marry me; once sold, no returns or exchanges."
"I'm not thinking about returning or exchanging you. At worst, I'll just get fat with you!"
The fox lovingly cupped Xing Ruyi's chin. As their eyes met, she couldn't help but imagine what the fox would look like if he got fat, and then...
"Stinky Fox, I warn you not to get fat! Even if I do get fat, you are not allowed to get fat!"
The fox laughed happily. He took Xing Ruyi's hand and said, "Don't worry, I won't get fat; I'm afraid you'll dislike me!"
