In the pavilion of the Zhou family's backyard, Zhou Junsheng was reading the newspaper after dinner. Cheng Shuping sat across from him, while Han Zhao stood nearby, and two maids were clearing the dishes from the stone table.
Cheng Shuping suddenly asked, "Junsheng Zhou, did you hear? Something strange happened at the Dow Pharmaceuticals Building today."
Zhou Junsheng asked in a deep voice, "What happened?"
"A boy with yellowish skin suddenly ran out from inside the building."
Hearing this from Cheng Shuping, Zhou Junsheng curiously put down the newspaper. "A boy with yellowish skin? Why hasn't it been reported in the newspaper?"
Cheng Shuping replied, "Such matters wouldn't be reported without permission from Dow Pharmaceuticals Group and Zhang Dashuai."
Zhou Junsheng became restless. He stood up, clasped his hands behind his back, and began to pace anxiously. "Could it be... they are already conducting human trials?"
"That's not impossible!"
Zhou Junsheng thought seriously. "It seems that the recent cases of missing children might be closely related to Tao Gongjin's experiments."
Cheng Shuping suddenly realized the seriousness of the situation and asked, "Should we report this to the police?"
Zhou Junsheng shook his head repeatedly. "The police won't believe it. Even if they did, Zhang Zhaolin wouldn't allow this project to stop."
"What should we do then?"
Zhou Junsheng sat back down across from Cheng Shuping. "Have you tested the new products from Dow Pharmaceuticals that I asked you to procure last time?"
Cheng Shuping replied, "Yes, I have. Most of these drugs have certain ingredients that exceed safety limits or contain banned substances. While these drugs can take effect quickly, prolonged use can lead to severe side effects, damaging human organs and causing a decline in bodily functions."
Zhou Junsheng nodded. "They are ruthless in their pursuit of profit! Have you contacted any newspapers to report this?"
"Everyone knows that Zhang Dashuai is a shareholder of Dow Pharmaceuticals, and the newspapers in Shanghai dare not report it."
"Then let the newspapers outside Shanghai report it!"
Zhou Junsheng lost interest in sitting and stood up, walking towards Garden Road. Cheng Shuping and Han Zhao followed him.
Cheng Shuping said, "I've already had someone start working on this."
As Zhou Junsheng walked, he remarked, "Ever since the banquet before, I've had a feeling. I think they mother and daughter have come back!"
Cheng Shuping advised, "I think you miss them too much and are imagining things."
"No! They must have arrived in Shanghai. I want to send someone..." Zhou Junsheng paused for a moment and then added, "No, I should go myself! I want to find them personally."
Cheng Shuping asked, "You want to go find them yourself? What about the pharmaceutical factory?"
Zhou Junsheng replied, "Haven't you been managing the factory all along?"
Cheng Shuping pressed on, "What about the development of the new Reagent? The research on the new flu vaccine and drugs is about to succeed. At this critical time, you can't just abandon it!"
Zhou Junsheng said with some emotion, "I keep thinking about those three hiding in Shanghai. Even if I'm at the research site, how can I focus on experiments? Only when I find them can I work with peace of mind, you know?"
Cheng Shuping firmly stated, "You can't do anything! Just because you suspect they are in Shanghai doesn't mean you can drop this project to look for her!"
Angry, Cheng Shuping turned and walked away. Han Zhao glanced at the unwilling Zhou Junsheng and quickly followed after Cheng Shuping.
Cheng Shuping stormed out of Zhou Junsheng's front door while Han Zhao flattered her from behind.
Han Zhao said to Cheng Shuping, "Chairman, he is the Chairman of Qilin Pharmaceutical Factory, and you are the Chairman of Cheng Family Chamber of Commerce. Since he wants to find his wife and daughter and push the affairs of the pharmaceutical factory onto you, why not take this opportunity to bring it under the Cheng Family Chamber of Commerce and make it your own business?"
Cheng Shuping turned around and slapped Han Zhao hard.
Cheng Shuping scolded, "This is a family matter between me and my brother-in-law; it's none of your business!"
Realizing he had spoken out of turn, Han Zhao covered his face and obediently stood aside. When Cheng Shuping walked ahead again, Han Zhao's obedience transformed into a sinister expression.
...
On a quiet night in a countryside cottage, the barking of dogs grew louder and soon became chaotic.
A group of hens roosting in a jujube tree suddenly panicked and jumped down from the tree, clucking and scurrying through the grass. A vague shadow flickered among the grass and suddenly lunged at one of the hens.
After catching a hen, the shadow stood up—it was the boy whose skin had turned a dry yellow after being injected with Reagent by Tao Gongjin at the Laboratory.
The boy bit into the hen's neck, tearing off a mouthful of feathers. Finally, he clamped down on the hen's neck, and it stopped struggling. The boy held the hen in his mouth and went after other chickens.
The lights in the owner's house turned on, casting shadows from the window as the owner put on clothes and stepped outside. Hearing the sound of the door opening, the boy, with a hen in his mouth and one in each hand, startled and ran away.
In the stillness of night.
Cheng Yuyao and Guo Zhiqian walked along a suburban road when they faintly heard chaotic footsteps ahead. They looked up to see a police team hurrying towards them. The police team drew closer; it was Wang Junpeng's squad.
Wang Junpeng urged the officers behind him as he ran, "Hurry up, keep up!"
The officers trailing behind Wang Junpeng were exhausted.
Guo Zhiqian recognized Wang Junpeng and walked over to stop them, asking, "Captain Wang, what's going on? You all seem to be in such a hurry."
As soon as Wang Junpeng's police team stopped, someone plopped down on the roadside, gasping for breath.
Wang Junpeng first exclaimed loudly, "Oh, it's Guo Zhiqian! It's so late, and instead of going home to rest, what are you doing here?" Then he leaned closer to Guo Zhiqian and whispered, "Last time you let Thorned Rose go, I took the blame for that. You should know!"
Guo Zhiqian replied loudly, "Me? I'm just about to head back. I see you all geared up; what major case happened ahead?" He then leaned in and whispered, "Could it be that Thorned Rose has resurfaced?"
"Uh, ahead..." Wang Junpeng was about to answer loudly but suddenly realized and retorted without mercy, "What does Thorned Rose have to do with you?"
Cheng Yuyao found it amusing to see the two bickering and laughed out loud.
Guo Zhiqian said to Wang Junpeng, "That's not fair. I kindly asked what happened ahead, and instead of answering me, you start cursing?"
Wang Junpeng impatiently replied, "Actually, it's nothing serious! Just a chicken coop was attacked; a few chickens were killed and some went missing!" He then whispered to Guo Zhiqian, "Last time we didn't catch Thorned Rose, Sheriff was disappointed in me. Isn't that your fault?"
Wang Junpeng turned to look at his team; nearly half of them were sitting on the ground. He urged them, "Why are you all sitting down? Get up quickly and let's keep moving!"
Officer Da Zhuang, a hefty man, waved his hand to fan his sweaty face and said, "We've been running for a while; everyone needs a break!"
Wang Junpeng immediately rejected this idea: "No way! If we take even a minute longer, the killer will have a greater chance of escaping! Get up now!"
Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao leaned against the roadside. The members of Wang Junpeng's police team sluggishly stood up and continued running forward under Wang Junpeng's lead.
Cheng Yuyao asked Guo Zhiqian, "Do you know him?"
Guo Zhiqian scoffed with a smile: "I helped him catch a murderer three years ago. If it weren't for that case, he wouldn't have become captain."
"Well, he is quite loyal!"
Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao continued walking forward.
Guo Zhiqian couldn't help but laugh when he thought of Wang Junpeng: "This guy is brave but foolish, with no sense of strategy... but he's not bad!"
Cheng Yuyao suddenly became interested in the captain who had once pursued her, brave yet foolish, and without any cunning: "Should we go see what case he’s handling? If he can't manage it, we can lend him a hand!"
Cheng Yuyao stopped, and Guo Zhiqian followed suit.
"Is that really necessary?" Guo Zhiqian asked.
"I think it is!"
Cheng Yuyao said, quickening her pace to catch up with the police team. Guo Zhiqian had no choice but to turn around and follow her.
Wang Junpeng arrived at the crime scene with his team and saw that the farmer's yard was filled with dead hens. The Farmer hurried over to greet the police. When the Farmer saw so many police officers arriving, he was taken aback.
"Wow, Officer, why are there so many of you?"
As soon as Wang Junpeng's team stopped, the exhausted officers sat down on the ground.
Wang Junpeng addressed the Farmer: "Something serious happened here, and the bureau is taking it very seriously, so I brought more people. Old man, where is the culprit?"
The Farmer quickly replied, "He ran away! He left early! When I reported it to you this afternoon, he was already gone!"
Wang Junpeng was taken aback and exclaimed, "What? How could he have escaped? Which direction did he run?"
"I don't know. If I knew, I wouldn't have called the police!"
Wang Junpeng looked back at the wailing team members and felt both angry and frustrated. "With your cluelessness, how are we supposed to help you catch the murderer?"
Sitting on the ground and rubbing her legs, Er Niu complained, "The captain made us run all this way; I'm exhausted!"
The other officers echoed in agreement, "Exactly... Was this just a pointless trip?"
"This... this..." Farmer looked at the police, feeling embarrassed and at a loss.
At that moment, Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao walked up from the back of the police line.
Guo Zhiqian said to Farmer, "Sir, let us take a look at the crime scene!"
Farmer hesitated, "Are you police officers?"
Cheng Yuyao replied, "We aren't police, but we might be able to help you!"
Farmer pointed to the large number of dead chickens in the yard for Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao to see.
Thus, Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao went to investigate the Dead Chicken Case while Wang Junpeng and the officers he brought filled the small farmhouse yard. There was no choice; since the officials had come, they had to be properly entertained. Reluctantly, Farmer and his wife served the officials hot water. However, they didn't have enough bowls for everyone. After distributing what he had, Farmer awkwardly smiled and said, "Gentlemen, I borrowed some bowls from our neighbors, but I'm still short a few. Please... bear with us for now!"
Wang Junpeng responded kindly, "It's fine! Since the murderer has already fled, we should finish this water and head back."
Farmer could only smile apologetically again. "I'm really sorry for making you come here for nothing. I'll check if the water is boiling."
Farmer ran back under the eaves of the house.
Under the eaves of the house, the Farmer was boiling water on the stove. The Farmer ran over and asked, "Dear, is the water boiling yet?"
"Almost!" the Farmer replied irritably, then complained, "What did I tell you? I told you not to call the police, but you did anyway. Now look at this mess; we've attracted so many officers, and instead of catching the culprit, we have to serve them."
The Farmer sighed in resignation, "Sigh! When you call the police, they send someone over to check. I didn't expect there would be so many!"
Next to the eaves were the dead hens that had been bitten to death. Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao, who were examining the wounds on these poultry, happened to overhear the couple's conversation. They paid no mind and continued their investigation.
These hens had all died from severed carotid arteries due to excessive bleeding.
As Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao followed the trail of dead chickens, they looked up and noticed a blood trail leading off into the distance.
Guo Zhiqian: "I suspect this is the direction the culprit fled."
Cheng Yuyao nodded in agreement: "I think so too. Should we inform Captain Wang?"
"Sure!"
Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao turned to find Wang Junpeng.
At that moment, Wang Junpeng and his team of officers were complaining. One officer named Long San said, "Captain, we haven't even had dinner yet. We've run several miles with you, and now we're exhausted. Look at all these dead chickens; why don't we have the locals stew them? We need to eat well before we can head back."
This suggestion from Long San received unanimous agreement from all the officers.
Meanwhile, the Farmers who were boiling water for these officers overheard their discussions and were clearly alarmed. Fortunately, their captain, Wang Junpeng, was a sensible man; he sternly reprimanded his team for such behavior: "No way! What do you think you are? Bandits? Get up right now; we're heading back!"
The officers groaned in discontent as they reluctantly stood up.
At that moment, Guo Zhiqian and Cheng Yuyao returned. Guo Zhiqian quietly asked Wang Junpeng, "Captain Wang, there's a great opportunity to make a contribution. I don't know if you want to seize it."
Wang Junpeng was puzzled. "Make a contribution? What kind of contribution?"
"Of course, capturing the murderer and eliminating the threat to the people!"
"The murderer has already escaped; how can we catch him?"
Guo Zhiqian replied, "I have already determined the route the murderer took while fleeing."
Wang Junpeng looked at Guo Zhiqian in surprise. "How did you figure that out?"
Guo Zhiqian explained, "The murderer left a trail of blood while escaping. If we follow the blood trail, we will definitely find the murderer."
In the distance, faint barking could be heard.
