That morning, before Zhang Xin had even gotten out of bed, she received a call from A Cai, whom she had sent to monitor Tao Ziwen at the police station. A Cai informed Zhang Xin that Tao Ziwen was going out to inspect the scene, and Zhang Xin immediately jumped out of bed, exclaiming, "Really? You didn't hear wrong? ... That's great! That's wonderful!"
After hanging up the phone, Zhang Xin rushed downstairs and asked Cui to call Chen Master. Then she took a car to the police station.
When Tao Ziwen and Wang Zhiyuan walked out, Zhang Xin's car happened to stop right next to them.
Zhang Xin sat in the car and enthusiastically called out to Tao Ziwen, "Ziwen Ge, are you going on duty?"
Tao Ziwen ignored her, but Wang Zhiyuan stepped forward with a grin, saying, "Yeah!"
"Why don't you take my car?"
Zhang Xin looked at Tao Ziwen eagerly, but he remained indifferent. Wang Zhiyuan quickly nudged him with his shoulder, reminding him, "Sister Zhang is talking to you!"
Tao Ziwen replied unhappily, "Then you can go ahead; I'll walk!"
Tao Ziwen turned to leave. Zhang Xin panicked in the car and hurriedly got out to stop him. "Ziwen Ge! Ziwen Ge! Are you still mad at me?"
Wang Zhiyuan pulled Tao Ziwen back. "Brother Ziwen, this is a bit much. Sister Zhang has already apologized; we should let it go! Besides, the matter of that boy returning isn't just known by us; the kidnapper might be planning to catch him again! We're racing against time here, you know?"
Zhang Xin approached with a pitiful expression and shook Tao Ziwen's arm. "Ziwen Ge, from now on, whatever you say goes. I, Zhang Xin, will never make you angry again!"
Thinking about Wang Zhiyuan's last words, Tao Ziwen finally said, "Alright! But drive fast, and when I'm working with Wang Zhiyuan, you must not interfere!"
"Okay! I knew you wouldn't stay mad at me!" Zhang Xin excitedly turned around and shouted into the car at Driver Chen Master, "What are you waiting for? Hurry up and drive over!"
The car pulled up next to Zhang Xin and Tao Ziwen. Zhang Xin opened the back door and helped Tao Ziwen get in, but he pushed her aside. "I'll sit in the front. It's best if we keep some distance."
"Ah?" Zhang Xin was a bit surprised but then felt disappointed. "Alright."
Tao Ziwen sat in the passenger seat, while Zhang Xin and Wang Zhiyuan had to squeeze into the back seat. Wang Zhiyuan smiled at Zhang Xin beside him. Zhang Xin awkwardly smiled back and looked out the window as the vehicle began to move forward.
The Cheng Sisters were also heading to the boy's house in Putian Village. As they hurried down the stairs, Guo Zhiqian was already waiting for them at the entrance.
"Hey? What are you doing here?" Cheng Yuwan was clearly surprised to see Guo Zhiqian.
"I'm waiting for you," Guo Zhiqian replied, keeping pace with them. "Cheng Yuyao, the case about Wang Junpeng must have been a mistake."
Cheng Yuyao quickly responded, "I know! The one who killed those chickens wasn't that dog; it was a boy under ten years old!"
Cheng Yuyao hailed a taxi, and the three of them got in.
Guo Zhiqian continued to ask, "How do you know? Also, how could a boy under ten possibly kill so many chickens?"
Cheng Yuyao said, "I don't believe it either. But that's what my mom told me. I suspect this is the work of Dow Pharmaceuticals; they must be conducting a very cruel human experiment."
Guo Zhiqian muttered uncertainly to herself, "I heard that a boy covered in yellow and full of veins ran out of Dow Pharmaceuticals Building yesterday morning. Could this be true?"
Cheng Yuwan, a victim of biological experiments, naturally understood the kind of suffering such experiments could inflict on children. At that moment, she stared blankly ahead with hatred and suddenly gritted her teeth, saying, "If they really are conducting such cruel experiments, I will never let them go!"
In the bustling morning market, there was a vendor selling chickens who was the farmer that reported the dead chickens yesterday. Behind him was a stand filled with dead chickens that had been scalded to remove their feathers.
The farmer shouted to passersby, "Selling chickens! Old hens already slaughtered at bargain prices—selling at a loss!"
As he shouted, he removed feathers from some unplucked dead chickens. When he looked up, he saw Old Zhang standing in front of his stall observing the dead chickens.
"Hey, Old Zhang! Why not buy a few to take home and make some soup for your wife?"
Old Zhang is the father of the Pale Yellow-Skinned Boy. He asked, "How did your chicken die?"
Seeing that it was a familiar face from the village, Farmer spoke honestly, "Don't mention it, a wild dog killed it yesterday!"
"A wild dog killed it?" Old Zhang was a bit puzzled.
"The one the police shot right in front of your house last night!"
"Oh!" Old Zhang remembered, but he didn't tell Farmer the truth. He couldn't tell Farmer that if it was his own son who killed those hens, that would be a big problem.
Farmer said to Old Zhang, "Why not buy a few? We're all from the same village; consider it a favor for me!"
Old Zhang hesitated, "Since they were killed by a dog, can you give me a discount?"
Farmer quickly replied, "Sure! How many do you want?"
Old Zhang had an honest expression, "I... I want them all!"
"What?" Farmer looked at Old Zhang in surprise.
Old Zhang couldn't hide his excitement, "My son is back! He loves eating chicken, and I want him to have plenty!"
"Even so, you can't buy this many. Can you finish them all?"
"I can! If we can't finish them today, we can save some for tomorrow; if we can't finish those either, we can save them for the day after. Since these are dead chickens and cheap, it's better to buy more and stock up."
Behind Farmer, Guo Zhuanghuai pretended to look at other vendors' goods but turned around. He was following Old Zhang.
At Old Zhang's home.
The Pale Yellow-Skinned Boy finished the last chicken bone and tossed it onto the pile of bones beside him. He stood up, looking around, and saw Mother still tending to the fire by the stove, so he walked over.
The boy approached the stove, tiptoeing to peek into the pot. Inside was chicken stewed by Zhang Wife.
He gestured with his hands, making a humming sound, wanting to fish out some chicken to eat.
Zhang Wife reminded him, "Just wait a bit longer, it's almost ready!"
Impatiently, the boy bounced around the edge of the pot, even reaching in to try and pull out the chicken from the boiling pot. Zhang Wife quickly stopped him, saying, "Child, it's almost done! Just wait a little longer! Please wait!"
With Mother's soothing words, the boy finally calmed down. He sat by the pot, watching the steam rising from the boiling broth.
At that moment, Old Zhang pushed open the door carrying a load of dead chickens he bought from Farmer. After placing the load at the entrance, he shouted into the house, "I'm back! Wife, I brought back the chickens!"
Hearing his father's shout while waiting for the chicken to cook, the boy turned around and ran out into the yard, jumping into his father's arms. He then noticed the dead chickens on the ground and joyfully bounced around. He made humming sounds again and gestured for his father to bring the dead chickens inside. Old Zhang didn’t understand what he meant and simply dragged the load of dead chickens into the house himself, leaving both Old Zhang and Zhang Wife astonished.
At this moment, Guo Zhuanghuai, who had been following Old Zhang all along, was hiding outside the courtyard wall, quietly peeking in to see everything that was happening inside.
When Zhang Wife came out of the house, she was wiping her tears sadly. "What happened to this child? How will he face others in the future?"
Old Zhang replied, "Don't cry anymore; it's good that this child is back! Who knows how much suffering he endured out there!"
With that, Old Zhang and Zhang Wife entered the house together. As soon as they stepped inside, they saw the boy standing in front of the large pot, reaching in to fish out chicken from the boiling broth and eating it greedily.
Zhang Wife hurried over and grabbed him. "Wait a minute! Is it hot? Huh?"
With tears in her eyes, Zhang Wife checked the child's arms. The child's arms were unharmed, and he was happily chewing on a mouthful of chicken.
Zhang Wife looked at Old Zhang, who frowned deeply and sighed heavily.
Zhang Wife said, "Why don't you find a doctor to take a look?"
Old Zhang nodded helplessly, "Alright! I'll go find a doctor now. You stay home and keep an eye on the child; don't let him have any more accidents."
Zhang Wife hugged the boy, "I know."
Old Zhang turned and walked out of the house, continuing until he reached the front door, where he closed it behind him and headed off.
At the base of the wall, Guo Zhuanghuai peeked out, his face covered with black gauze. He wanted to enter through the front door but turned around to see a car approaching the child's home. Guo Zhuanghuai quickly hid again.
The car driving towards the boy's house belonged to Zhang Xin.
The car stopped outside the boy's front door. Tao Ziwen got out from the passenger seat, while Wang Zhiyuan and Zhang Xin exited from the back seat.
"Ziwen Ge! Ziwen Ge! Why did we come to such a remote place? Ouch!" As Zhang Xin ran to catch up with Tao Ziwen, she twisted her ankle in her high heels and nearly fell. Wang Zhiyuan hurriedly stepped forward to support her.
"I'm fine, you don't need to help me!"
Zhang Xin pushed Wang Zhiyuan away and caught up with Tao Ziwen, linking her arm with his and calling sweetly, "Ziwen Ge!"
Zhang Xin looked up and saw Tao Ziwen's annoyed expression. Realizing she was being bothersome, she let go of his arm and asked, "Ziwen Ge, where is this place?"
Tao Ziwen replied coolly, "You'll know once you go inside."
Zhang Xinjiao pouted playfully and shot a glance at Tao Ziwen, reluctantly following behind them.
They arrived at the door, and Tao Ziwen knocked. A voice from inside called out, "Who is it?"
Tao Ziwen replied, "I'm a police officer. I heard your child has returned, and I'm here to understand the situation."
Inside the house, a boy with dry, yellowish skin was sitting on the floor eating chicken. Zhang's wife hesitated but eventually walked to the door and opened it a crack.
Tao Ziwen showed his police badge to Zhang's wife and asked, "Ma'am, this is my badge. May I come in?"
Zhang's wife thought for a moment and finally came up with a reason to refuse: "No, my child cannot see strangers."
"Ma'am, I have been in charge of the recent missing children cases. Your child has returned; he might be able to provide us with more information about the perpetrator. Please let us in!" Once he confirmed that the missing child had indeed returned, Tao Ziwen got straight to the point.
Zhang's wife hesitated again: "I'm afraid... afraid you will take him away!"
Tao Ziwen quickly waved his hand, saying, "That won't happen."
Wang Zhiyuan also spoke kindly, "Ma'am, please open the door!"
"Alright!" After hesitating for a moment, Zhang's wife finally opened the door.
As Tao Ziwen, Wang Zhiyuan, and Zhang Xinjiao entered, they saw the boy with his back to the door chewing on chicken. Both Tao Ziwen and Wang Zhiyuan were stunned by the boy's appearance. Upon seeing him, Zhang Xinjiao immediately turned pale and clung to Tao Ziwen, screaming in terror, "Ah... monster! I'm scared! Ah..."
Zhang's wife stood anxiously to the side and introduced them: "He is my son; he is not a monster. Look, he is very obedient."
Tao Ziwen, Wang Zhiyuan, and Zhang Xinjiao looked at the boy. The boy ignored them and turned back to continue gnawing on the chicken.
Tao Ziwen quietly approached the boy and called out to him, "Friend! Friend!"
Zhang Wife added, "He hasn't said a word since he came back!"
Tao Ziwen felt disappointed.
Wang Zhiyuan asked Zhang Wife, "Did he change like this as soon as he returned?"
"Yes! I don't know what happened to him. He has been eating nonstop since he got back. From last night until now, he has already eaten five chickens."
Looking at Zhang Wife wiping her tears.
Zhang Xin bluntly said, "So this child has turned into a monster? You can't just keep a monster in your house, can you?"
"He is not a monster! He is our child!"
Zhang Xin's words once again stirred up Zhang Wife's sorrow. Zhang Wife hugged her child from behind and cried softly.
